Behold! 'tis another lame, late-night, sleep-deprived, too-much-mining-in-one-day thread brought to you by me! Bwa!
Anyway..
1) Ore thieves got you down? Never get robbed again with your own personal hauler-slave! Leave a BM in the can, drop the ore, slave picks it up. You can even mine in places that were impractical before, like systems with no stations in them, or deep inside a mission deadspace!
2) Ever wonder what's on the other side of that gate? Well, with your disposable slave-probe, now you know! If he gets podded, you're out a shuttle and a clone, and not your expensive ship and even more expensive cargo.
3) Want to engage in lame, risk-free pvp? Maybe just for practice? Or because you really do just suck that much. Either way, with your personal bait slave he can sit in a belt pretending to be a noob jetcan miner while you sit in your pwnmobile in the next system waiting to jump in on the unsuspecting can thief. You'll go through a lot of bait ships but what do you care about 25K ship, insured, fit with only two miner Is and a warp scram?
4) Want to bust a solo gate camp, but you're afraid they'll run off or won't engage? Just send your trusty bait-slave in a hull-tanked hauler through the gate! He'll live long enough to get a point on him while you jump through and lock yourself, and with two gate guns on our unsuspecting camper he'll be that much easier!
5) Want to run missions in lowsec, but you hear all kinds of horror stories? Just park your trusty alarm slave at the first acceleration gate, and if for some reason you fail to notice the scan probes or approaching pirates on your scanner, the noise of your slave's shuttle going KABOOM is sure to provide a last-minute warning that you need to leave.
6) Having problems getting supplies? Maybe a tragic misunderstanding has occurred between you and CONCORD at some point in the past? Never fear, your trusty supply slave can go places you can't! The cops won't look twice when they see your slave running supplies out to your base in more freedom-loving areas of space.
7) Made some enemies? Perhaps among the less reputable factions? Maybe they have something you want, but they won't talk to you anymore. Never fear, your trusty standings slave will have no problems getting work! You do the work, he takes the credit, but at the end of the day you still walk away with the loot. Everyone wins!

I have used an alt for scouting ever since I jumped through a gate that I had just scouted with my main, switched ships, and come back only to find that a 10 man pirate gang had showed up in the interim. You know how some guy has to be the first one to die in an hour? That guy was me :(
They're also incredibly useful, as stated, to sit on top of acceleration gates and watch for incoming baddies, giving you time to get the heck out.
Frankly I don't see how people are supposed to function in low sec without alt scouts, but that's just me.
The bigger issue is that running two accounts at once just feels right: with only one account, there is just so much sitting around doing nothing. Running two accounts simultaneously generates close to the needed activity level, at least for me.

Ain't THAT the truth.
For a rookie combat pilot running missions, your choices are:
1.) Run the same ten missions over and over while you skill up 1-3 months for a better ship
2.) Try your hand at solo piracy (soon after which you won't be able to do high-sec missions)
3.) Log out

The power of two have only been offered 3 times as far as I know in the 4-5 years the game have exsisted. I am unsure if you can call that heavily promoted.
Also, since I quit SWG I have been offered 2 free non-recurring 7 days free re-joins on SWG and 1 14 day free non-recurring rejoin. I have been offered a few free non-recurring rejoins on most of the online games I have played through time tbh.

Other reasons:
1) If you want to rat in the Drone regions of 0.0 efficently (drones only drop alloys, and a lot of them after all)
2) If you want to refine the Drone alloys (takes 3 or 4 lvl5's to do that effectively... doesn't sound fun training those skills on main)
3) If you want to gatecamp a cloaked scout on the other side of gate is quiet helpful
and many many others...

I don't need an alt account.
I have 3 character slots.
2 of them have full rescreach skills and I log in once a month to get dtatcores using thhe 12 agents they are using.
