I was going to post this in the market forum but that seened to be more for buying and selling. So if this is the wrong forum I apologize.
I was getting ore prices off the market today and in the advanced market under history it would quote me an average going price - lets say for instance Jaspet was 51 isks here - but if I do a quick sell it would give a different quote of Fair Market Value - Jaspet was 172 isks here. Why the big difference? Or am I looking at two different things and thinking they should be the same (or at least close).

Did you have the advanced market graph in region-wide view? I think it defaults to constellation-wide, while the "average going rate" quote that pops up is at least region-wide. Also, I don't know how long a time is averaged together for that popup... it could be longer than you were displaying.

History = Sale orders that have been done (IE someone actually paid that much for an item)
Average Market Price = Average of sale orders that are "out there". (IE someone thinks that another might pay that for an item).

The average market price is over a period of time, and seems to be derived across the whole EVE Universe. Prices vary widely between stations, and regions, so it pays to shop around if you are making a big purchase. Just fly along the superhighway and check prices in each system, thats an easy way to do it.
Also, some people like to spoil the average prices for some self-indulgent reason. They do stuff like sell one unit of tritanium to an alt for multimillion isk, which results in an unrealistic average price being displayed.

Ok. Thanks for the info. Then reason would have it as the Fair Narket value quote recieved from the quick sell being initiated is best reference to go by then...right?

It is usually never right to sell by the Quick Sell option. The price there is usually far under the actual value of an item. I usually look at the Supply for the region in Advanced Market. There you can see what people are actually selling the item for which is a better indicator for its value
