I love the story. I've read almost all of the EVE Chronicles.
But I feel rather detached from the story, frankly. After playing for a month, nothing I've done in the game so far involves the story.
Am I missing something? Are there missions I can do that involve the story?
For example, there is the recent report that fifteen thousand slaves were being freed. Were Amarr agents giving missions to players to transport some of those slaves from Amarr systems to Minmatar systems?
Or is the story just meant to create a mood for everything else we do?
If the latter is the case, I wonder if the Devs would consider adding such story related missions, and thereby expand the game experience.
If such story-related activities already exist, can someone please tell me where I can get involved in the story?

Important missions tie into it somewhat, well, the combat one does.
As Caldari, Gallante navy scouts are intruding on Caldari state so you have to kill them. that kinda ties in...
Agent missions in general dont really, but polaris events do.

I think it would be good if there were some "prime fiction" based important missions that occurred (probably about the same frequency as implant missions  or less), and these may be an exception to the normal faction changes; ie you could gain faction with both Amarr and Minmatar, based on the prime fiction mentioned by Babs above. In implementing these, they could be a fixed quota of missions that once they have been allocated are no longer offered (unless someone rejects or fails the mission).

I got 29 Transcranial Microcontrollers as a bonus from my Ishukone agent, which ties in with the Minmatar Slaves story.

That's what the Events team is for. If you watch the Events forum, you can interact with the storyline somewhat. If you read last years "summary", you can see real player names in it.

TomB: End the speed-race. 1 propulsion mod allowed, make turrets affect ship attributes like +speed/+ab speed +agil for progressivly smaller/lighter turrets, -speed/-ab speed -agil for long-range. |

I think you'll find that there are GM events that are run from time to time that tie in with the story, but any time ive seen them run they only want VERY experienced characters, which kinda sux for those who havnt been playing for over 5 months.

I've been playing EVE for eight months. I have never encountered nor participated in one of the quasi-mythical "live events," nor seen a GM outside the help channel.
Live events are nice and all, but they only reach 1% of the playerbase. I still strongly believe CCP should look into approaching story as Asheron's Call 1 did - some live events for big story items, many scripted tie-in missions available to all through the agents.

Working for the Minmatar republic fleet i have hit slavers and their cronies in kill missions where i have to rescue captured people who are being sold as slaves. This ties in with the Minmatar and Amarr conflict nicely

I have seen GM's advertising for 3 events in the short time ive been playing, twice in the trade channel and once just on local in a system I was in. Never got to participate in any tho.
