Ok I have now gotten really fed up with this damn system. CCP you have got to start looking into a way to fix this. The way to fight now is to outblob the other one so they dont dare to attack due to lag.
Is there ways to go against this or not? obviosly this is the biggest problem in EvE atm, Personally I would recommend that we do some SERIOUSE graphics change when you enter a system with loads of ppl and the system is getting to be a LAG fest.
Not sure at all how to do it, but I could see a chanse of a "black" screen, get the environment to "dissapear" take all the graphics of your ship and other ships. Start limiting the data that is creating lag.
Really to create more or less a damn <DOS> program if that is what is needed. Atm the game is NOT playable when these big fights are going on.
What we are doing atm are attacking a BOB system and when ever the POSs comes out of reinforced there is LAG that you cant dream of, making the game unplayable.
I can personally take a complete graphics kill for situations for this or is there any other way to fix this?

While it is true that the server struggles with 600+ in system, it's always funny when the blob'ers complain over lag
CCP has tried to do something about lag since EVE started. It's not going to get better than it is now (barring some complete technical breakthrough on CCP's part) except gradual increases as CPU speed increases.
The problem is that CPU usage is exponential with number of players in the fight. That means that even a relative large increase in server capabilities will only allow a relative small number of extra players in battle without going lag-out again. Thus we're stuck with what we have now (barring that technological breakthrough).

Edited by: Twin blade on 13/01/2008 17:40:20 Why do people whine about this when its us making the problem in the first place ccp make's it ok for 300to fight simi laggy and then players will only take double that and want lag free fight's.
If they was to make it look like pong and able to cope with 1000 player's at once the people would only overload it by trying to get 2000+.

I know but its not insane i can't play lag like when you want to load more than what the systerm was ment to take.

CCP IS doing something about it. They are supposedly working on a whole new server, which from what they've said, will allow for true distributed computeing on the server end. So no more one node per system max. They'll be able to on the fly put as many nodes to work on a given system as they need.
this is supposed to be comeing in 2008, so look for it an hour before midnight on new years eve 2008...

well I don't know ccp should fix server code asap and upgrade servers, i mean they want more players to play this game, there will be more and more big battles, if you like it or not.. Plus how cool would it be 500vs500 players in fleet battles OMG! :)

The lag caused by large numbers of people in (or more specifically an EVE node), is NOT a 'graphics' issue.
If EVE reverted to the most basic form of graphics (think: asteroids 1980), you would still have lag.
Lag in these large fights is due to the computational complexity of passing information to all of the other people in the system and calculating various interaction items (i.e. weapon fire, hit percentage, collisions, etc.).
It's a non-trivial problem. CCP may be able to partially brute force it by adding more hardware, but that will only go so far.

The one thing about this though is that we don't only need more than one node per system... We need more than one node per GRID! No information has (afaik) come from CCP as to the specifics on that....
If it's only multiple nodes per system, then it'll help Jita and mission systems where people are spread out, but not large-scale PvP. If it IS per node (and I have my doubts about how thats even technically possible), EVE will become even more epic.

Recently the lag has been getting crazy. Smaller engagements that were fine previously now yields omgwtf amounts of aggravation.

first format c:, and throw that damn windows server away? Then buy some super comp and build unix server, for start?
then make server somehow more dynamic? i mean they have enough money that if they don't know how to do it, they can pay someone to do it for them.

So how would they go about familiarizing themselves with the workings of said unix server? How long would it take for them to hire and train employees who can use it well? Would there be professional-level support for it?
How compatible is their server software with it? Does it support a subset of SQL designed to optimize the database queries common in EVE?
You say it like it's as simple as plugging in a mouse. Realistically, if CCP were to change their entire server architecture it would take close to a year. Interestingly enough, they're working with IBM to build an entire new supercomputer just for EVE and have been for the past six months.
But hey, let's not let facts get in the way of this here argument, amirite?

Why should we care for that? They should know, they get paid to keep servers up and playable. But in last 3 years they didn't improve anything with lag and gameplay.
And that's my last post regarding anything, if you don't agree that's your problem.

Sums up LADY's arguments pretty well. In addition, the "This is my last post.." remark is usually a sign that the poster realises he's made an *beep* of himself.
While I don't like Microsoft products at all either, the DB is pretty immaterial to this problem. Most data will be cached on the node, and it's the nodes performance that's lagging things out.

We just had a massive, massive bit of both desync and repeated client reloads in TPAR-G... everyone was basically forced to log in and out to clear out the lag, and there were hardly 100 people in local!
