Alright, so the situation is, I have the money to either get a new blu ray system or just go for a PS3. The thing is, I am told that the blu-ray system which is purely dedicated to blu-ray is no different than a PS3 which also has a bluray system in it. Not to mention it is the same price. What I want to know is why the PS3 and the dedicated bluray system is the same price when you are getting a bluray system and gaming system all in one PS3 for the same price as the dedicated bluray? ANY knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated.

Simple Sony are taking a hit on the Blu-Ray drives they stick in the PS3 to make it more appealing.
That and the fact that it is new tech so will be overpriced for a while whilst the companies involved recoup the R&D costs.
give it a couple of years and you'll be able to pick them up for $100 or so as they become more mainstream.
Prices won't change much until the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray war is decided and a winner steps forward. -------------------------------------------

m8 do some reaseach, i recently read a site( Kotaku i thnk ) where they tested Ps3 blu-Rays capabilities next to leading dedicated players and it topped them in quality and features.
Tbfh, youd be mad not to consider one, as it rapidly turing into a top class media server and games machine, all this with added blu-ray for the price.

If you want, you could think if it this way. PS3 is a blu ray system with a free built-in gaming system. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

Warner Bros. cancelled all affiliation with HD-DVD and plan on using Blue-ray so stay away from HD-DVD and buy a PS3.

Same. However, given only those 2 I would prefer HDDVD purely because my family has a 360. Though blu-ray would be an excuse for a PS3 aswell....

Exactly, given the choice between the formats i would choose HD-DVD

Simple really. PS3 is forced to compete, price wise, with the XBox360 and the Wii. They've got to keep their prices at least ball park similar to their two competitors (and they're already the most expensive). As such they're flogging off their console at a loss, on the hopes of making money from game licensing.
Blu-Ray players, OTOH, have nothing to compete with except (A) other Blu-Ray players and (B) the PS3. Since none of the major brands have started trying to push their prices low, the gold standard of Blu-Ray prices (that all the dedicated players are measuring against) is the PS3; as long as they're cheaper than that by just a few quid, any and all non-gamers will buy their product (a market of some 80% of the world's population). Since the PS3 is still bloody expensive by anyone's standards, the prices for dedicated players remain high. ------
