In certain missions usually ones with sentry guns, I get this reoccurring explosion on my ship. The graphics and sound look like I've been hit with a missile or rocket yet I do not take any damage nor is a message displayed on my screen like when I take or dish out damage. Anyone else get this? Is it lag related or a glitch related to the game coding itself?

You're probably out of the weapons range.
No damage = no worries ---------------------------------------------- I'll ask in advance of you saying you're leaving - Can I have your stuff? |

It's a long-standing eve bug that missiles still impact and explode (but don't cause damage) when you're out of range.
It looks stupid TBH. nullnull |

It makes sense is a way, your shields are able to dissipate all the energy created by the explosion. Look at it like throwning a fire*****er against a brick wall. Big Ed |

It's a long standing bug due to how EVE handles weapon graphics and affects both guns and missiles, however it's much more subtle with guns. Try and open up on a very distant target (that you can still lock) but that is outside your missile/gun range. If you "look at" the target, you will see that both guns and missiles will "hit", but you will not deal any damage. It's simply a byproduct of how EVE handles weapon animations. In the case of missiles, this also produces a loud explosion sound, which can sound quite alarming.

Well, I guess the point is if a missile has enough fuel to reach you then the resultant explosion should cause the same amount of damage regardless of range (yield hasn't changed).
It would make more sense if the incoming missile just exploded at its max range, or veered off target (out of control range), or something. Seeing constant explosions on your ship doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

So you're saying that the shields have 100% resistance to the damage type? If you are hit for some amount of raw damage, you will always take some actual damage if your resistances are below 100% (which I assure you, they are ).
As people have said above, this is caused by the missile reaching its maximum flight time and expiring - yet due to a bug, it keeps flying until it eventually hits the target and explodes for 0 damage.
