Rewrite your nicely distributable graphics engine in OGL and make a client that supports gnome and KDE and end all the issues now. yes I know it takes time and money but it will save you time and money if you just get it done with. Make Eve run native on linux and give up with the damn emulation wrapper.

They wont do this, I remember that they were on ogl and they switched to dx, I always said that it was a bad idea in the forums...

Come now. CCP is big business. One can hardly expect them to have the audacity to not pay the Microsoft racketeering fee now can we? I mean, think of the implications of bucking the status quo.

who cares about the status quo of microsoft. if they switch to OGL they can hit all 3 platforms with very little changes between all 3 clients. it just makes logical sense and would make all players happier.

The thing is...DX was CRAPstones even when it was first released. OpenGL has always been "better" in terms of stability and performance. It just so happened that a certain company selling a certain OS with monopoly on the market made it so that DX was "natively supported" in that particular OS and also made it so that OpenGL was not very well working in that OS without a few hax and a few extra DLL files.
I've always been a supporter of OpenGL, but they just can't compete with DX due to the market.

yes but the thing is opengl can still compete. some of the best games ever made were written in opengl specifically the ones made by ID.

Do you know what would be required to completely port a Linux Client for a game that was written in DirectX? I am not entirely privvy to that whole procedure, but I have to imagine that it would be horrendous, if not outright impossible. CCP is a business, and thus, flowers and lollipop dreams of "Free Software PWNS dude!" cannot drive their strategies, or they would not remain in business for very long. Instead, they must live in the real world where currently, Microsoft makes the rules like it or not. Many of us are trying to change all that, but when dealing with businesses, one must be realistic about expectations.

Yes I do know what it would take. It would cost them money and lots of time, however, it will make them more money in the long run.

K. How would it make them "more" money in the long run?

Edited by: Sevarus James on 17/01/2008 00:52:37 This argument has been around as long as there have been competing "standards"....thanks for nuthin' Microsoft.
As it sits, CCP has firmly indicated that EVE is and will continue to be a directX title. That is 100% their prerogative.
That they have acknowledged Mac (and to an extent Linux) as well as saying they OFFICIALLY SUPPORT it.
This, imho, is a good step in the direction of looking at multiple platforms, but understand that they have put 7+ years into this game, they aren't going to reinvent the wheel at this point.
We have another big patch coming soon for the MAC and Linux official client which will give us the Trinity graphics.
Currently, under the SUPPORTED distros and video binaries, the classic gfx wrapped client works VERY WELL.
