I cannot get Eve to work with Ubuntu Gutsy and a ATI X1950Pro at all. I tried a Nvidia 8500GT but unfortunately that simply did not work at all with the Nvidia binary drivers on my machine (mobo conflict or something I think). So getting a refund on that today. I dont want an expensive card as this is my secondary linux box I use for a lot of tasks, one of which I want to be able to user my miner/trader alt on.

Until today I was using 2x 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 cards in SLI mode. But my new 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 card just arrived today (and was completely free thanks Play.com!) so I just plugged it in. I noticed my monitor gets no signal once it gets to the Ubuntu splash screen and then comes back on once GDM launches, however there is an option to turn off the splash screen in menu.lst afaik so once I look up the exact changes to make I will just disable the splash screen
Also you might have the same problem I had. I have an SLI board and if you don't put your card in the primary PCI-E slot the motherboard agent screams about there being no graphics card and makes loads of beeps just to reinforce the fact. As soon as I put the card in the primary PCI-E slot it worked, I originally put it in the second slot because I didn't think it would fit in the first due to my huge Zalman Heatsink on the Northbridge, but I just about managed to squeeze it in in the end.
Performance wise, superb. Pushing 96fps in eve classic when docked in a busy system (over 160 people in local atm) and pushing 50-60fps in Eve Premium under wine with everything at full power in the graphics settings and shadows turned off. For the first time I got to see the new graphics it was nice, but still a little too buggy for my likings so I am back in the cedega wrapped client now.
Seeing almost 60% increase in performance with the new card. And bearing in mind I play in 1920x1200 resolution, that's quite an improvement.
Anyway hopefully my problems with the new card today will help you fix yours, to reiterate make sure you have your card in the primary slot if it is a PCI-E board and if the screen goes blank and monitor reports no signal and powers off once you get to the Ubuntu splash screen, don't worry about it, just wait until GDM boots and see if it comes back on.
Good luck,
Suki

Using a 7900GS and it worked ootb with the Official Client, and also the Clients (Classic and Premium) via wine except for all the bugs which currently plague the wine clients. But that has nothing to do with the video card. I suggest installing the latest drivers via ENVY and then give it another go. Installing that solved a few minor issues I was experiencing before.

I'm using dual 7600GTs running in SLI, fps isn't the greatest but it can handle a decent skirmish, and compiz effects work on the eve window so can't say fairer than that

I'm using an 8600 GT on one monitor, and a 7600 GT on the other. They both work.
What's really weird is that the 8600 gets a lower frame rate. Unless the 8600 is running on X screen 0 and the 7600 is running on X screen 1, in which case the performance is nearly identical. Which comes out to 60 fps in space in a pod at 1280x1024. Yikes.
I've got the new drivers installed (actually still the beta ones, but pretty close) and everything is configured for speed. Sure wish I knew what is wrong with it.
Suki Kamir and Ancy Denaries, could I ask a) what your xorg.conf files look like and b) whether you're running 32 or 64-bit operating systems? the NVIDIA driver installer says something about 32-bit compatibility libraries, and I want to blame this on something....

Thanks. I tried to replicate the relevant parts of your setup and couldn't quite get the drivers to downgrade. Ended up with an extra 5 fps from disabling some modules, for which this forum doesn't seem to have a smiley which is quite right.
Oh well, at least it's really good at glxgears....

ATI X1300 here. I'm not saying that it's fast (it's not), but it does work.
Graphics: Using the latest 8.452.1-1 driver package from AMD, installed with the directions from here (further down the page where it reads "This work [sic] fine for ATI mobility radeon 1400").
Game: Used the Ubuntu EVE package from CCP.

Evga 7600GT with newest stable nvidia-driver in gentoo's portage.
Video is very very smooth, not 100% as good as on winxp pro but very very similar.
If I could get hardware sound working right (I think I'm missing a kernel module the client needs) I'd be pretty set to finally dump winxp =)

Ati drivers, grrr. Despite their current condition, the ati drivers on linux are getting better. They are working with the OSS community now and dumping driver source everywhere so expect exponential improvements within the year.
They were previously like Nvidia, bundling a binary with wrapper source you compile against your kernel, then later full specs for some cards, but not doing as good a job so their drivers are pretty bad on linux right now for some cards. The hardware isn't inherently bad, some of the drivers are just terrible.
I have one of their all in wonder cards I bought for a myth tv box, sitting in a cardboard box because of horrible drivers. Hopefully I can build that box soon 8)
I fully expect to see ATI cards become the best choice on linux within a year. NVidia's guys are really good, but I don't think they'll stack up against hundreds of kernel hackers now that they finally have what they've been asking for for over 10 years.
Here's an article. They only opened things in september so be patient. Older ATI cards are well supported by open drivers, but the new ones are about to get the same treatment.
I don't know about you all, but I think linux adoption as a home user os is about to hit critical mass.
