I see a lot of threads here where people are asking for setup for some specific ships. Some question go like this:
Hi I just got a ship X and I have no idea how to fit it. Give me your best setup.
The reason for not knowing how to fit it is usually because they havenŠt even looked at the stats. The answer they get are usually just bull**** answers and nothing valuable is gained from it.
Now IŠm not gonna tell you a foolproof way to fit a ship but merely point out the right way to ask for help fitting it.
First know the ship, the slot layout, the power grid base speed and so on. Have some vague idea of what you want to do with it for example long range Moa or a blaster Thorax. Try a setup and find where itŠs lacking for example you canŠt maintain your cap, you donŠt have enough cpu or powergrid. Then ask for possible solution to your problem and make sure you give people information about what you are trying to do.
And always remember it is fun to get a good setup on a ship __________ Capacitor research |

This is a MUCH needed post...
Those endless: "what is the Best setup for my X ship" and no specification for what you want to do with it are increasing.
That is like asking. "What is the best means of transportation in the universe"...

I think this problem comes from the fact battleships these days don't have clearly defined roles.

I never really understodd why people ask for loadouts so often. Seems like everyone wants to be the same. Half the fun of this game is experimenting and finding out a loadout that works for you. Some people may tend to be diffrent handlers of situations. And having a neutral loadout doesnt do any good for you when you when your using a shield tanking setup and your always more worried about keeping your armor up or causingt the most dmg ever. All of the moduals do diffrent things. The descriptions tell you exactly what they do. Try experimenting and thinking outside the box. In most cases suprising the enemy gives you the upper hand. Well unless its the AI.

Personally I am more inclined to answer such a post if the person asking shows that he has given it some thought. -------------------------

Edited by: Jazz Bo on 23/03/2004 10:13:41 Sadly, the explanation is simple:
Many people are ignorant and/or lazy.
They've made enough Isk by mining or scamming, and bought a new ship.
However, they're too lazy to look at the stats of the equipment on the market and try to figure out what works best for them, and they're too lazy to browse the forums for the COUNTLESS threads on ship set-ups.
FFS, there are often several "Best set-up for ship x" on the first three pages of this folder.
Don't these people ever read threads started by other people, and haven't they noticed the "Next Page" link in the lower corner?
Besides, no-one in their right mind is ever going to give away what they think is the best set-up, or the one they're using at the moment.
Furthermore, I personally like trying different set-ups on my ships, to see what can or can't be done, and how they work. Call me a freak, but I actually think it's fun.

They never have. They can do anything, and better then the cruiser/frigate alternative, they have access to almost all weapons, they only need themselves of another battleship for defence.
These are the basics I would say to that issue of battleship roles.
Longrange bombardment, short range huge damage, something like those would be nice. But in those there should be a weakness and vulnerabililty imo.

Couldn't agree more. "Whats the best" type questions are kindof assuming there really is only one. Its quite difficult to get people to part with Tachyons if thats all they believe is the best weapon. Its not until they try things out and maybe find they don't have staying power in a fight they might drop their preceived excellence with X config.

Indeed. We can help offer advice, but our playstyles may differ. Its always fun to experiment, try different things whilst hunting NPC's and see what you like, and what you don't

i love fitting and test new setups, thats one of the best things in the game, seeing what extremes you can push the ship to
my fav for npc hunting in 0.1-0.4's is a thorax Hi slots 3x 720mm howlizers 1x 650mm howlizers 1x 425mm Autocannon
Med slots Medium Shield boosters
Low Slots 4x Reactor control Units 1x Projectile mod or Armor repairer
that produces about 1100 on the power grid lol
oh and the 8 heavy drones
or my rifter that does 2,000m/s without a MWD
people should test and test again, untill they find the 1 for them

You should keep in mind that there are also countless people who are savvy enough to read through the boards and find what they need - without ever having to post a question. My guess is that it's the lazy ones who aren't willing to comb through old forum posts to find what they need (why doesn't CCP have a forum search tool btw?)
I used to ask my corpmates bunches of questions until I found these forums, as well as eve-db and eve-i. After spending the better portion of a few days reading through forums, I found I had a much better idea about the game and its mechanics. Now that I'm keeping up on reading the forums, I find that I'm the one answering many of the questions my corpmates have.
Anyway - I digress. Point is that the people you're trying to reach with this post sadly won't be the ones that will end up reading it. It's the quiet ones like me that read it, take it in and remember it when we make what's usually a rare post.

IŠm not against people asking for setup all IŠm saying people should give it a little thought before the go running to the boards. I suspect that many of those people actually to have something specific in mind and are either to lazy to post what they are trying to do or scared of being called a newbie.
I honestly donŠt hate the fact that there isnŠt a forum search tool. I like that there are people asking the same question each week/month, what I hate is when 20 people bump into a bug and 10 of them run to the forum and start a new thread. That problem will not be fixed by a forum search tool. __________ Capacitor research |

*I* think the problem with those asking is not that they're stupid. I used to ask a lot of questions about ship fitting. *MY* problem was I was in a tiny corp. While I had access to a reasonably good amount of isk from mining and could replace my ship, what I DIDN'T have was allies for support. I couldn't just go attack somebody to try a setup out because of the fear of repurcussions.
I've sinced joined a larger, well organized corp. In addition to gaining info from their experiences, I'm in an environment where I can play with my setups and join in pvp battles and truly test my setup in a live fire situation.
And while I won't claim to be super good at pvp, I HAVE gotten more insight into fitting ships and am quite goodm at setting up a ship for pvp.
I think that's the big break thru. Most of the people asking for ship fittings are either a) new to the game or b) not in an environment optimal for learning.
That being said, anybody that asks for help setting up a thorax or dominix for mining needs serious help.

I'm usually willing to give advice as to ship configs, but msot of what I've learned has come from previous posts on this board, and so it's a bit annoying when someone posts about something they could easily search for...
Regardless, I think that an ideal post for help would be an opinionated question, for example, a post asking "Is it worth it to mount my hybrid guns, and have no defense, but mount projectiles and have good defense" I think that post would be far more benficial to not only the person asking, but to the entire community.
Tis much like the proverbial saying: "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for life"
Or something like that ^_^

I don't mind people asking questions, but seeing 50 posts for the same problem is annoying. I answered a lot of mine my reading through the forum. At the least it gives me more focused questions to ask. Above all the best way to find a setup that works is to try it. A config designed by one person for themselves won't work unless you have similar play styles. Stay in safe spave where the NPCs don't have too big teeth and you can experiment all you want. |
