Edited by: Suze''Rain on 18/01/2008 19:26:30 So yesterday was the most "interesting" PVP horror of my life. no, I'm not talking losses of faction battleships, carriers going down, being podded with a full set of +5s... I'm talking the really bad moments in PVP.
And I wonder if it can get any more ball-clenchingly unnerving than my experience yesterday:
(the scene: Local Channel, 0.1 sec system. Actual comments paraphrased)
War-target A: "so, Mr Suze, is your name ****?"
**** is my name. I feel mildly worried by this. I decide jokey is better than "who are you, you weirdo?".
Suze'rain: "well, I'm not usually called 'mr'. more often 'you utter b*stard' or the likes... :)" War-target A "but you did write a book?"
at this point the alarm bells are screaming. Suze'Rain is taken from Suzerain, an RPG I was a co-author of back at the end of the 90's. combined with knowing my name, I'm worried. very worried.
Suze'rain "erm.... yes? who exactly is this?" War-target A "I met you last month. I was interviewing you for <company name>"
as I collapse on the floor in combined hysterical laughter and the horror of "oh s*** I've just been trying to pod-kill my real-life employer!" moment.
Fortunately he doesn't take it personally, but suffice it to say, that is without any doubt, the most visceral moment of terror I've ever felt in eve, as I had horrific images of having just scuppered a rather good job by being a murderous git in Eve.
My question is... can anyone beat that moment in utter horror?

Well, not a moment of horror, but...
My oldest daughter is 14. She's told her friends at high school that "her Dad plays Eve..."
Evidently, this makes me the coolest Dad on the planet. It has also made some of attack me on sight (she gave them my character name)... ------------------
Let me show you around. That's my lab table, and this is my workstool. And over there is my intergalactic spaceship. And here's where I keep assorted lengths of wire. |

Sort of a similar stroy though not eve-related:
I was in a football pool a couple of years back, I ending up coming back from pretty far down the ranking to win the whole thing. Later on that same year I found out (while we were talking about football pools) that my boss was the guy that I has just barely disloged from first place to win the pool in the last week.. .. and as you can imagine he wasn't to happy about it....... luckily he was a pretty nice guy and didn't hold it against me.
When you hear a story like this I find my initial reaction is to think: "You should have just podded him, it would have been funny!" But the truth is that when your real life gets involved, especially your job, even a benign situation like that can make cold sweat pour down the back of your neck.

Once podded my best mates dad, didnt know it was him till later in the week when i went to visit my mate, and asked how he was getting on in eve, and i offered to help him mine back after a supposed "Big settback" he had during the week, he asked me who my char was and i told him, and several minutes of hysteria ensued, my mate, who ALSO played eve at the time, sent me 200mill as a thanks for it

Just before Xmas I was chatting to the boss's son at the company office party and found out he was an Eve player, exchanged character names etc and had a good natter..
First week in Jan I am back at my desk, I am fortunate that my desk is in the office at my house ( I work from home 99% of the time) No matter how hard I try I cant get get back into work mode, turn phone off, close e-mail and every other distraction still cant raise any interst in working despite having a project that really needs to be finished yesterday.
So I decide about 10.30 am that an hour on Eve will do me the world of good, so logs in, ... Time passes, having fun when all of a sudden a brand new noob character convo's me.. (paraphrased)
Opens convo
Noob Character.. HI
Me.... errr HI whats up
Noob ....Any chance you can stop playing this game and get that document to me today< I have been trying to ring/e-mail/IM you for hours
Looks at clock its 4.30 pm !!!!
Yup in desperation, my boss who also works from home downloaded the trial account and convo'd me to tell me in effect to get the hell of Eve and do some work !!!
All is not bad though, as he is still playing Eve and we sort of ignore the fact we are both on-line in the middle of the working day

Thanks. you;ll be glad to know that I neither typed it at this dodgy keyboard, nor with as little effort as I post on a forum. There are also these things called 'editors' whose job it is to fix the errors and lazy habits that I have. you might've heard of them.
While they can be quite vicious, they're much less of a horror than snarky (half) wits with nothing constructive to add to threads, in my mind.

From a few weeks ago:
A few of my friends and I are standing around at school taking a break and the topic of MMOs came up, and we were discussing our favorites. I of course brought up Eve.
After a few more minutes, we had gathered quite the crowd, probably twenty or so discussing MMO games and everyone's experiences when character names came up. I said who I was in Eve and a few of the guys looked at me funny for a second and then one of them said 'dood, you killed me in Eve! I'm ****!" This was followed by a few more "me toos!".
Apparently I've pirated quite a few of my classmates/schoolmates during my time in Eve and cost them quite a bit of ISK. Was rather interesting to have half a dozen guys looking at you who you've podded repeatedly and destroyed billions of ISK worth of their assets lol.

It's a surprisingly small world, at times...
I was at a conference this past summer with a couple friends who played Eve. There were other Eve-players at the convention (hardly surprising), and one of my mates got to chatting with them. The usual enquiries (who do you fly with? what do you do? how did you start playing?) went around, and my friend mentioned that she'd gone a slightly different route.
'Oh? who were you with?' '...Privateers.'
There was a moment of dead silence followed by the last thing anyone would expect to hear at a respectable conference:
'YOU B****!!'
...And that was how Eve caught my interest... ^__^;

These stories are hilarious, I only wish I had some of these to share myself. I've met only one person that plays EVE (aside from my friend that I got into EVE) but he no longer plays. I've tried to get him to come back, but to no avail.

Not EVE related, but thread related.
Back in high school I played a Mechwarrior game online. I was in a medium (50+ ton) mech and there was a smaller 30 ton mech on my team. I ordered a frontal assault. For some reason the pilot of the smaller mech didnt like my tactics, and started smack talking me. A few moments later he shot me in the weak spot in the back of my armor and blew me up.
A year later I was discussing the story and I realized that the smaller mech had been piloted by my new college roommate who I had never met before!

B*stard
yes, Andreas Drakar was "War-Target A" in the original post. without any doubt, the most comical moment I've ever had in Eve... and the most terrifying.
is DS put it: "epic".

Take care of that book, they're like gold dust nowadays. I have a copy signed by the rest of the team, and it's one of my "run in to save from a fire" posessions. I wrote mostly the entire live section, but also some of the core mechanics, and a few of the pantheons - the entire valhallan content was my fault, and I'm still pleased with the little bit of pseudo-Saxon story in that section. Roughly 1/3rd of the total content, I guesstimate.
Have you heard there's now a 2nd edition out? Martin Klimes got the rights back and it's now available as an e-book or print version. it's not quite as beautifully baroque as the 1st ed, but it's still pretty and shiny. if you want to find out, I'll dig out the links once I'm back home and evemail them to you.

I'd love to pod my bosses ass once in a while... if he actually played EVE.
Well I can't personally say that I ever had an in-game moment of real life horror.. except if you count the short "ball-clenching" moment that you describe that I sometimes get when I get surprised by an enemy in PvP but thats more kinda the classic adrenaline I guess.
I guess your in-game experiences with your employer will make for some fun meetings (or at least post-meeting pub visits).

He almost immediately told me that he was enjoying flying with the Privateer Alliance.

I knew coming back into EvE that my boss was playing, he's the one the convinced me to come back. Sadly, he left EvE shortly after that and I never got a chance to send him back to his clone vat.

Well... worth a shot.
I started eve 2 years ago after I felt a fall out from ffxi. My girl friend who enjoyed the game didnt join 6 months later however this is after I got reassigned to another base and we where sperate for a while.
One day minding my own business inbetween corps being lost and all, doing some 0.0 dodging and mapping (bookmarking) ran into a dead end system where a bunch of cans littered the gate all named with so and so corpse. That should have told me to get the hell out of there. Turned back around and started to fly out when the gate activated. I knew my ship was slow and I knew I wouldn't make it back to the gate in time in this boat. So I turned to warp to the nearest celestrial object since I didnt have time to plot down my usual bookmarks when I go flying about. An Absoultion command ship uncloaked and scrammed me and toasted my poor domonix under a minute and my pod...
Virtual self woke back up read the killmail and the killers name was vaugely familar. Then I got a convo from her and it dawned on me it was the GF when she started asking how was it in my new RL base. Im quite surprised how much meaner she is in this game and finding out the lesson of focusing training is better than spreading out all over the place. Her absoltion with near maxed out stuff is proof enough when I can barely pilot any tech 2 ships myself.
And thats my story.

Parrow gives a long hard stare to the eve population hoping they will reveal more funny "i shot my boss an got fired" / "my boss lent me his account to check out eve and i concordokkened his obelisk" stories

That was an enjoyable read. I honestly think I would have to change characters if my boss was playing Eve and was aware. I would definately like to "approach" them with an anon character. Eve is brutal, and pod killing can be unforgivable to some.

I don't have any idea's like that but I've always like the idea of having to use a breathalizer to log on..... I've lost more than one ship from drinking to much and alt-tabing in the middle of a mission.

My current Boss and His boss were the ones to get me into Eve years ago before any of us worked for our current company ~
I've podded them both a few times, even lost a CNR on loan from one of them ~
