Now, I want to go mining low-sec soon, nufortuneatly I have no one to go with so I'm a-goin' to have to rely on tanking. I know that this is the recommended set up.
High: 3*T2 strippies with crystals
Med (important): 2* gisti B type NPC specific harderners. gisti A type small shield booster. eutectic cap recharger. Low: 2* mining upgrades 2
I was wondring wether I could swap the a type booster for a B type, I'm not that rich! Its a whole 150 mil cheaper. Also I would like to know wether I should swap the mining upgrades for warp stabilizer 2s or would this just weaken the Hulks range to much?
Please reply.

Aint nothing in losec that 5 med drones cant annihilate before you are below 90% shields, so I wouldnt worry too much about tanking it tbh. If you DO go ahead with tanking, just use normal named t1 mods or t2, no need for anything expensive, the fit you posted is for tanking BS rats forever in deepspace.
My advice though is to NOT mine in losec, and if you still gonna do it, DONT mine in a hulk (get a covetor), and if you gonna ignore that advice too I'd go for warp stabs, agility rigs and maybe even some EW to break lock.

When mining in low-sec, the rats are the LEAST of your concerns. Player pirates are, by far, the much greater hazard. Count on losing your ship sooner, rather than later. Fit and run accordingly. _______________________________

Personally I'd agree with the Reverend, except that instead of a Covetor I'd go with a Retreiver, 5m ISK vs 20m ISK and it's got 2 strips instead of 3. Personally for lowsec I'd go with T1 strips too, because unless you have escort you are going to lose it. Consider WCS for the lows also or you won't have a chance of getting away.

The advice is really helpful, but I want to question the post recommending a retriever. I once tried that, and I was roasted. Even if I had had scramblers I would have been roasted before I got away. However a coveter with t1 strips sounds like a good idea, if your going to lose your ship often.
One more question: on the map, how many players in a system is considered 'safe' and what is considered downright dangerous.

Safe == only you in system
Downright dangerous == you + 1 more

Amen to that. You are only safe when docked. In low-sec, if they aren't your friends, assume they are out to kill you. _______________________________

If you use t2 SB and t2 specific rat hardener, can do the whole work very well for medium spawns. You might need to cycle your stripers by 5 secs betwin to keep your shield running all the time, but you dont need to spend 200m for the gistii SB. About safety. You safe only while offline

The only exception to that is if you know everyone in local is your friend. Anyone who's not your friend probably won't hesitate to pop you and take any loot you drop. Or just to watch the fireworks.

I use a C-type or B-type gistii booster in 0.0, and 2 dread gurista hardeners. That's cheap (about 50-60m for all the modules), and tanks 3 battleships and 3 cruisers like a charm.
Having said that, I'd never fly it into losec, see other comments above :)

If you are going lowsec mining you are going to have a hard job covering you expected loses. Jaspet is currently worth less than Veld per m3 and a lot more dangerous to collect, so you'll have to go even lower sec.
Your initially posted setup would probably make you a popular little pirate target. I hope you are posting with an alt else you'll need to worry about locator agents for the next week or so.

Right, so keep it T2/ named as deadspace stuff isn't needed. Go in a cheaper ship (coveter). Don't go anywhere with people in and preferably have some friends to make your losses minimal. Also scouting an area first would be a good idea. Anything else?

When you find an area you like figure out who the locals are, and make friends with them. Many will be willing not to shoot you as long as you help defend the area from outsiders.
Other options are to join their corp, or convice your corp to move out their.

Since any method you use solo will likely be painfully inefficient relative to miner + hauler teams, why not consider a covetor with 2 strips and a cloak? forget the warp stabs in low and replace them with expanded cargos. No jetcanning here, fill your hold and truck it to the station. Make CERTAIN while mining that you aren't too close to another object (which prevents cloaking) and if you see rats, kill them QUICK, as you can't cloak either if something has lock on you. Otherwise, just mine away and cloak as soon as someone enters the system-- don't wait and give them a chance to figure out which belt you're in. Again, this method is painfully slow and I doubt it's worthwhile ISK/hour compared to mining omber/kern/scordite. But, fun isn't measured in ISK/hour :) Good luck.

By the time you factor in using a stripped down covetor or retriever, you really might as well mine in high sec with Hulk. If you good with a npc corp and can do lvl 3 or 4 missions, there are decent roids in a number of missions. Besides the bounty's/loot/salvage you can mine for hours and no one bothers you. So unless you sign up with a null sec corp (which is a very good idea) for efficiency sake mine in hi sec. Veld is not glamorous but at 3 isk for trit you ought to be able to do 8 mil/hour with a well fitted hulk and skills.

i used to mine in lo sec a long while ago and i used a hurricane and mined into secured cans. i picked a system that was only a gate away from hi sec and the lo sec area had numerous belts to choose from.
hi slots: 2 heavy missile launchers and 6 Miner 2's mid slots: medium shield booster, shield hardener, shield extend and a recharger. lo slots: warp stab and T2 processor chips.
i placed numerous can's in different belts so that i wasn't sitting around in the same area while i mined. this helps slow down noob hot shots who haven't figured out how to work the scanner yet but isn't fool proof so keep a weather eye on the local channel
Ladies and gentlemen, we will shortly be experiencing some exploding followed by some crashing...so i'd hold on if i were you! |

I'm not a miner, so this may be hilariously stoopid, but would it be feasible to use a covetor and use one of the high slots for a cloak?
Find yourself an empty low sec system, then just do the isk-farmer thing whenever anyone enters local?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe the Navitas, the Gallente mining frigate, with Miner II's and mining upgrades, will out-mine the two lowest level mining barges.
Why mine in low-sec in a slow to align covetor, when the Navitas costs WAY, WAY less, and does almost as good of a job? You can ninja a Navitas into low-sec, you will have a hard time being a ninja in something with giant smoke-stacks and flames. ----- CEO, Astrum Contract Services Group

Firstly I would second the advice given here: Get to know people around the system you want to mine in, not everyone will want to pop you but most will. Therefore try a dead end system with few passers-by Secondly to reiterate: If you're not alone in system, you'll soon be dead so as soon as someone jumps in, warp out of the belt so stay aligned to your safe spot or station so you can do it quickly A Navitas won't outmine a Retreiver (I don't think) but will outmine a Procurer. The problem with the Navitas is I think it can be setup so that it can be setup so that it can mine more than its cargo capacity (even with pulsing of lasers). A better option is probably an Osprey (Caldari cruiser) which has a bigger cargo bay. Also might work well with DCM IIs as they can use crystals to increase yield further. If you do mine in this way you will be constantly dropping ore into a jetcan though.

Basically solo mining in lowsec is just being pirate feed.
I agree with another player that mining mission belts will be far more profitable and much quieter.
Even running level 1 missions for bad agents I've had missions with Kernite and Plagioclose roids in abundance. Granted they aren't the best around. But you can make far more isk over time mining the low ends than you will mining high ends and getting blown up from time to time.
0.0 will offer safer and more lucerative mining that low-sec anyways. You'll just have to deal with alliances. Many alliances though are in great need of miners and will offer you protection.
To sum it all up.
Low-Sec it's never worth it.

Yeh if you want better ore then High-sec can offer just go into 0.0, an Alliance will provide much better protection then anything low-sec has, if anything. Downside is, solo mining in 0.0 itself may be possible, but your Alliance will want a part of what you mine (otherwise why protect you?) and you still have to get it all to high-sec if you want to do something with it other then making raw ISK. Even if you just want to mine in 0.0 on and off, jump clones are on 24 hour cooldowns and moving in and out of 0.0 on a daily basis is risky.
For those purely out for ISK, go mine in 0.0 and mine the higher end ores 24/7. However, for those wanting to do their own production, do a mission from time to time and some Exploration as well, High-sec is probably the best choice.
Just keep in mind what you would make mining ore A over ore B but also keep in mind any other influences that mining ore A might bring, such as the risk of losing ships, not being able to do anything else but mining, having to get it into high-sec if you want to do something with it yourself, no hangar of your own (only POS public hangar) and whatnot.

Find a slow part of lowsec where the only pirates are solo gankers.
Fit your hulk with 2 webs and a T2 scram, and T2 med drones.
Solo gank-star comes along for your lucky charms, and then....

I am not quite sure, but is a max skilled Osprey with 3 modulated deep core miner II, better than a Retriever with 2 Strip miner II? I know a Dominix outmines a Retriever and a maxed Minig cruiser equals a Dominix counting only Mining laser. --
