Hi, posting with an alt here to suppress some bias people may have towards or against my main.
We were on a roaming gang just now. Our gang, 20 man strong, 8 battleships + support. We enter a station system whose local, including us, was close to 50. Scouts reported several carriers at POSes, so we were hoping for a fight.
Unfortunately nothing happens..we stay in local for awhile, carriers stay in their bubbles, not a single soul undocks. You can almost hear the intel channels roar 'OH DEAR GOD ITS *** STAY DOCKED IF YOU VALUE YOUR FERTILITY'. 20 versus 30, plus carrier support. Some questions cross my mind..what could i be doing instead of this now? Why are these people owning 0.0 space? What kind of dayjobs do they have? Why do they play eve (i play to kill and get killed - red.).
This blobbing mentality has got to go..

You're in a nano-gang and they can't kill you? People that are after fights, don't fly around in a nano-gang. It isn't fun for the people that cannot possibly kill you.

yeah it sucks when people won't come out and fight, probably didn't have any FC's on and were afraid to engage IMO, honestly tho with multiple carriers VS a small BS gang they should have been eager to engage. ... Why do I PvP? Because I love the feeling I get when I see the pretty lights and know that someone somewhere is screaming incoherently at their computer screen. |

half of there people could've been afk and logged in. don't assume just because they have more than you in local means they can field a superior force.

Hmm sounds like either your corp/alliance carries a lot of fear with it's name OR these people don't like fighting unless they completely outnumber their foe's, of course there is a possibility that they were all AFK but I sort of find it hard to believe that 30 out of 30 people in a system would be AFK.
Can you give us all an idea of what alliance/corp you are in?, so we can try to understand just who it is you are talking about.

Why do people assume that just because *they* are in a gang and looking for a fight, that everyone else who happens to be logged on is, as well? I suspect that a sizeable majority of EVE's population is AFK at any given moment, so it's likely that many if not most of those 30 were not even paying attention. If it was a station system, it's also very likely that some of them were engaged in non-combat pursuits, such as industry. Those who wanted to get into fights ... were probably out roaming somewhere else. And without any information as to who you and your prey were, who's to say that your targets didn't have ROE that disallowed you as targets?
So what you're really asking is "why didn't the five industrialists who were active ignore their ROE and come out in their barges to fight our blob of twenty competant PvPers?!" And the answer is that even among those for whom odds analyses are a foreign concept ... not everyone shares your view that the only reason to play EVE is to kill and get killed.
I hope this helps.

Actually it does, and i perfectly understand you. You're right, perhaps most of them were engaged otherwise, but even then, this isn't the first time this has happened. With odds ranging in between of 1:1 till 5:1 against, i have seen entire armies remain docked, to the reasons i can only guess. Sometimes you get a proper fight, but usually you don't.
I'm finding it hard to express my feelings on this without blaming others for their style of play (afraid to lose things, etc.), so i'll probably think of something more reasonable in the morning.

Why should they have fought you? What did they loose by not attacking? Did you go and blow up a pos? Or some important bit of station? Or any fixed asset that needed defending?
Or did you just go away, fully justifying their unwillingness to engage?

I'm going to make some assumptions. Let's see how close I get.
Tri roaming nano gang. Ganking in the same space they always gank in. The victims know that if they dock up. The Tri gang will leave after they get bored, and l33t 15 year olds get bored fast.
And you got bored and left. They lost nothing and the tactic worked.

I'll be polite and go over your points one by one. No, we weren't nanoed. We had 8 BS and last i knew, ravens didnt nano very well. We were in space where we have been before perhaps..twice? A long way from our temporary home which in turn is along way from deklein. Lastly i am not 15 and i have no pretentions to leetness or any affiliated terms.

More likely on the intel channel...
"Hey reds in local!" "Anyone to x up?" "Nah, wifes wants us to go out in 20mins." "brb - dinner" "Dave?" "He went afk half an hour ago mate" "Anyone got a spare barge I can borrow?" "My alts in jita, ***** lag - anyone need anything?" "Anyone in gang atm?" "Im popping down the shops for some smokes, back in 20 minutes" "logging for the night, 2am here - cya"
and so forth...

to be honest i'd have to say that if they had the firepower to take you down, they should have showed sportsman ship and given you a good fight, but they didn't which is there loss really.
Theres 2 ways people play this game, stay safe and lose nothing, or live to fight and have nothing.
The latter is more fun

Unfortunately this is Eve 2.0, and its been headed this way ever since official alliance support. Theres simply no reason to fight, since its all about money and territory now and pew pewing like that would just be lost money. Its all about blobbing now, and blah blah blah on the forums to scare away everyone else. Quite frankly this is the reason I got fed up with .0 PVP and only go back for the occasional bomber jaunt. _________________ [IMAGE REMOVED] -- aka Cpt Bogus -- Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

It's the same as its always been. Every station has a number of afk/industry folks. Every paper tiger has roaming gang to make epeen larger.
Some times said afk'ers wont engage epeen paper tigers... and we get eve-o post 12914376-d

So you've got 20, and they've got 30 * about 20%-30% active & pvp ready (rest will be afk, usually 60-80% of total). So you likely outnumbered them 2:1. Got to send in dictors/tacklers to grab something in a belt, and keep the rest a few systems away so they aren't seen by scouts. Standard tactic.
Originally by: pastafarianist Unfortunately nothing happens..we stay in local for awhile,..., not a single soul undocks. Why are these people owning 0.0 space?
Because a 20 man gang isn't a threat. Maybe a minor annoyance. They know you'll camp a gate for a bit, get bored, and leave. By the time they have equal numbers & enough huginn/rapiers you'll likely be gone. Most in station are probably afk and have alt-tabbed to another pvp char that is out doing exactly the same thing as you are. Out trying to gank miners/ratters.
Originally by: pastafarianist This blobbing mentality has got to go..
By your own account you _did_ bring more people. I'd call that a blob. Eveyone does it. But if the numbers aren't close its just suicide.
Ah. You're in tri. Scouts say tri, everyone assumes nano gang. They don't even bother worrying about it. Theres no point in getting 20-30 huginn/rapiers needed to counter. Even if you fly battleships it'll be assumed there will be a massive nano blob nearby.
It was fun to shoot or even suicide a tri gang before nano was the fad. Now its a waste of time and effort.

To continue, the 2nd carrier didn't come on scan for about 5-10 minutes after we arrived. They knew we were coming, as we had popped a few ships prior to getting in system. The in-gate was bubbled w/ a lone mega off the gate and a taranis at warp-in range. We do have to question though...should certain people be holding space? All I can say, is we'll be back for more ganks...until they decide to fight. FYI, we had a poor FC running the gang. A goon newb-ship gang could have pwned us all!

You make alot of assumptions there in order to further your own agenda of trying to talk me or TRI down..i'd refrain from doing that in the future, you might start believing it yourself eventually. I already commented on the issue of 'afk-ness' above. The nano issue has been thoroughly dealt with, too, and if i was looking to kill miners, i would bring my stealth bomber, not a raven.
With 'the blob mentality' i mean the general trend to not engage until a comfortable superiority in numbers has been achieved - something you can hardly accuse us of. If this 20 man gang isn't enough to make them come out and defend their space, we might try something else, if the servers allow for it.
