Originally by: Hermosa Diosas Ok How is this gonna benefit the current playerbase? Other than having to download yet another app for those that dont have steam already. This isnt a a way of creating better deployments, as the current system works fine, and CCP admitted they wont use Steam for this purpose.
You're not being forced to use steam, it'll only be a way of acquiring an account for new players.

Originally by: CCP Wrangler Yes, this has to do with marketing, it is marketings job to get new players to join EVE.
In fact i'm glad you're doing it, cause more players = more server load = more crashes = more incentive for CCP to fix it.

you are right, but only partially. it will be the same client, just installed to ur steam folder...and launched in a different way. but it will require a cd-key to play eve, thus my question, will one be distributed to the players that wish to use steam over the regular client.
It will be the same key you could buy in a videogame store to activate eve. Steam will have nothing that regular eve hasnt. Only difference is you get 21 instead of 14 days trial with the steam keys. See it as a GTC with benefits.

The issue that remains, though, is that lag will increase. All people in this thread defending the Steam move so fervently fail to address that concern. It's just so much easier to say "read the thread, noob, Steam will not be mandatory".
Steam hardly uses any bandwidth when not updating/downloading and only a few MB of RAM. I really don't see the problem, you dont have to run it all the time. I for one only run it when i want to play any of its games..for the rest, it stays down.

Increased player growth will make the current lag problems even worse. More players, that's one of the major benefits for CCP using Steam to distribute the game.
Sorry i misunderstood you there. Aye, more people = more lag. Might give CCP an incnetive to ifx it.
