Actually, The Witcher is a pretty awesome game, with pretty much none of the "Omg you have to be Paladin-like good or nber-demon-bent-on-controlling-the-world evil" like in most RPGs, like NWN (which I also love btw). In The Witcher you make a choice and what happens later in the game because of that choice (certain people won't talk to you or do business with you or get killed off entirely) is not something you can just reload your way out of, which means your decisions actually matter.
Honestly, I wouldn't take yahtzee reviews too seriously, because while he's honest and gave me a few good laughs on the review of The Witcher, as well as other games, he doesnt' sound like a person that has any kind of gaming knowledge since The Witcher is very easy to get into and understand (and no, I never read the manual myself before playing - I tried reading it earlier today but it is more complicated than the game itself).
The combat is a variation of point and click where you rely on timing for comboes, along with some limited magical abilities. The menues are very easy to navigate:
You have 3 sword styles; strong, fast and group and two sword types (steel and silver). Then you have base abilities like INT, STR and so forth that you can also upgrade, plus some magical signs. On the surface, there are a lot of stuff to choose from but I know that Yahtzee haven't played it at all since you get bronze, silver and gold skillpoints as you gain higher levels and that the bronze SP fits the bronze colored skills, silver SP fits the silver colored skills and well, you should be able to guess where the gold ones go by now. Making potions isn't a problem either as it automatically tells you if you have the ingredients for them on the left where your formulas are (highlights with white text) and that you can double click a recipe to make it if ingredients are present.
How this is more complicated than analyzing a Diablo skill tree is beyond me, which is why I know he hasn't even tried it

Edited by: Forando on 26/01/2008 03:05:56 I've heard a lot of people really likes Jade Empire, I haven't tried it myself. It might be worth looking into.
Shadowgrounds. Although it doesn't sound exactly like what you're after, I have to mention it. It's somewhat short, the story isn't epic in anyway, but it's good action, atmospheric and it's been one of the best surprises I've had as of late (I just bought it blindly on Steam). It resembles the old Alien Breed (top down shooter on Amiga) game quite a deal. The music also has a tint of retro! Bah, perhaps I'm just a sucker for it, big time! To save you the trouble; You be wise not to expect the sequel (Survivor) to match it's entertainment. (It was pure ****oo!)
Vampire: Bloodlines on the other hand, has an ok storyline, character progression. Might not be the top-notch graphics, but quite entertaining, and lots of weird dialogs and character freedom.
ProgressQuest. Now that's a pearl. It's free. Got world PvP. Large player-base. And if you're interested, I could easily throw you some starter capital if you want to start playing it, since I got a level 88 Double Wookiee on the Oobag server. Ohh, and the grind ain't bad in ProgressQuest. Lately, there's been quite a few worn-out raiders from WoW joining up, so the lowbie areas are not all deserted.
GuildWars. I suppose it covers most of your requirements and it's undeniable eye-candy. However it's story might seem vibrant, it's very linear. It's PvP system is entertaining for a while, but nothing to write home about. Good point is, although some consider it a MMO, it's without monthly fee. It might not last months, but the areas to explore, the stories to be told, I can easily justify when looking at the price of the package. Some have played it for a few hours and been terrible bored, so I figure it's one of those extreme "Love it or hate it"-game.
And I'm backing up those who said Baldurs Gate II, Planescape Torment and System Shock II. They are hands down some of the best games I've played.
Edit: Added typos and stuff.
Enjoy, and fly safe..
