Just as it says in the topic title. I've been having a somewhat dreary couple of months as far as gaming is concerned. Nothing new, exciting is coming out for quite a while to come, and i've played pretty much everything else.
Now, i'm talking about something specific. Something i really want to find, something i haven't necessarily heard about.
What i am looking for is a game. Not in a specific genre, it can be anything from mmorpg to tetris, so to speak. It also has to be on either the PC or PS2.
It has to have a good story, something that edges me on to play, just to know what happens or just to watch the next cutscene. It has to have decent graphics. I'm not one of those people who "just want gameplay and no graphics". If i spend my time in a virtual world, i want it to look nice, preferably something from 2002 or later, from a technical standpoint. It has to have character generation. I want to play my own character, not a dreary one-liner character that no one cares about. The character generation also needs to be better than "select a face and skin color", i want something more than just a few drop down menus with 3 options each. I want it to be at least so long that i can spend a week on it without getting bored or finishing it, a week of casual play that is. I hate the recent trend of "5 hours is enough, lets hit the bar"-games - CoD4 might be brilliant, but it's too damn short, for example. And in case of MMORPG's, the grind is acceptable, as long as there's more things to do than just grind.
That's all i can think of right now. I won't be listing the games i've already played here, that list is quite long. I'll just tick off whatever appears in this thread. The first game that comes along and meets these requirements will win, and i'll send the ISK to whomever posted it.
Ah, and so far, i've pretty much completely agreed on every ZP review. Just so you know.

Sounds like you want some kind of RPG/FPS hybrid to me. Only thing I can really think of is STALKER, which includes everything you specified except character generation... but then you've probably already played that
making a list of what you've played/liked would help too

Actually I feel your pain. I loved EVE but lately it has lost its appeal to me and I spend more time on the forums.
I was thinking of Pirates of the Burning Sea. I am hearing Ship PVP is fun. (I haven't played yet but might try it soon)
Other games I am considering. KOTOR 1/2. Oblivion. Neverwinternights 1/2.
Sins of a Solar Empire - might be my new past time if they get the balance right.
Good luck in your search and let me know what you find.

Edited by: Reiisha on 24/01/2008 01:22:02 R-type Nope. Just, no.
Supreme Commander Very casually playing. Got the "gold edition" out of the budget bin, but it doesn't really have what i want.
Silent Hill 2 Not much of a horror fan, and not of Silent Hill in particular. Actually, i'm not really a fan of any adventure... The last one i really liked was the Journeyman Project.
Resident Evil 4 R-Type has already been mentioned.
Shadow of the Colossus Haven't tried that yet, and i think it might be a good game indeed, but it's just not what i'm looking for.
Hitman That's more like a straight up shooter with some costume bits... And a genetically engineered bald dude isn't really the best way of playing the game "your way".
World in Conflict Flashy RTS, and i've grown rather tired of all the ww2/modern day war themed games. Too much is too much.
Grim Fandango As i already mentioned, adventures aren't really my strong suit, although i agree it's a nice game.
Stalker Played it for a while, and i still need to finish it. But it's just not the right thing, as it is quite linear in many ways - And it also forces you to play as a really ugly russian deathrow radioactively poisoned gruff grunt.
PotBS I considered it, but i'm entirely not into the whole pirates thing - And it feels like a cheap rip-off of EVE's and WoW's "supposed" best qualities. Besides, every time i see a pirate i have to think of Orlando Bloom, which is not a pretty thing to think of.
Kotor Played to death. Haven't really tried #2 yet, but it's more of the same - Rubbish customization, Star Wars universe. It's on my todolist, but it's too much like #1 to really get a fresh feeling from it.
Oblivion Played to death. Completed every single quest, bought every single house, finished several mods in several combinations... Same with Morrowind.
Neverwinter Nights NWN1, i never finished - It's just that dreary at the start. It's still on my todolist though, as is NWN2, which for some reason has the exact same problem. They're also both very linear, and the really akward transition from outdoors to indoors still leaves a bitter aftertaste with regards to immersion. This might have been the one, but so far it on;y really offers a story which only gets interesting when you are half way through.
Sins of a Solar Empire Can't say anything about it... It hasn't even been released yet. It also looks more like a pure RTS rather than a story driven game with decent character development.
Jade Empire Still meaning to try this one, but i can't really get a hold of it. I'm not going to get it on steam when the actual box costs 4 times less in the local store. Still, reading the reviews and seeing some footage suggest a very "kotor"-like feel, and i've already seen it.
Dawn of War I like Warhammer Fantasy a lot more, and i'd rather play it "the right way" anyway :)
So far, nothing good yet. Keep looking!

Edited by: Isiskhan on 24/01/2008 01:27:04 I would suggest Morrowind over its recent successor, Oblivion. It still looks good by today's standards and personally I found it far more engaging both in terms of lore, atmosphere and gameplay. It's very open-ended, free-form and featuring an enormous world littered with places to explore, books to read, and weird crap to be discovered to keep you busy for a long time aside from the main plot line. Character advancement is also highly customizable and unconstrained. It only suffers from a slight over-abundance of annoying flying critters.
Along with Fallout and Planescape Torment (another highly recommended game if you like a good story in an offbeat yet very well realized setting), Morrowind is one of the most memorable - if not the most memorable - RPG I've played.
EDIT: just saw your new post, nvm.

Go oldschool. If you missed out on this generation of game then you missed out a lot.
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (With Throne of Bhaal Expansion).
Planescape: Torment
Can probably get it from some bargain bin or website for 10 bucks, but you are getting more bang for your buck than you could possibly imagine.
The graphics are sprites on hand drawn maps from a birds eye view, so they look eternally decent.
The story is fun in Baldur's Gate II, and it serves for an interesting way to progress. Planescape: Torment probably has the best Lore, Environment, Voice Acting, etc etc in any game I have ever played.
The combat in Baldur's Gate II is definitely fun, and you will have a good time fighting your way through countless different strategic situations. Planescape: Torment however does have combat, but I find it quite like Diablo II combat (Which I find rather boring.) However, combat is just a way to "Solve" a situation. You can talk your way, sneak your way, figure your way, and avoid all but 4 instances of combat (One of which is the tutorial I believe.)
Have fun. ----------------------------------------

Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 24/01/2008 02:06:36 I'll second Planescape Torment (if you can find it). Just a fantastic game all around.
Baldur's Gate II is likewise fantastic (perhaps more approachable than the somewhat strange story that Planescape is but I have to say Planescape is better...can't go wrong either way).
You may not believe me on this but you should give Psychonauts a go. For a long time I avoided that game...just seemed not even remotely my thing. As it turns out it was really, really good and loads of fun. It may not hit on all your requirements but honestly it is worth a go for most people.

Edited by: Reiisha on 24/01/2008 05:37:50 Morrowind Again, played to death, even more so than Oblivion. I'm a TES player at heart, and i can spend a lot of time in Daggerfall, Morrowind or Oblivion, just not now :)
Planescape Torment I tried playing it for a bit, but it was just not my style, not what i really like. IT was just a bit "off" - A matter of taste, i guess.
Fallout Same here. I just couldn't really live with the post-apocalyptic setting, a setting i have problems with in whatever game, movie or book it's depicted in. Never liked it.
Baldur's Gate Played both, never finished #1 (still intending to one day), but finished #2 (including expansion) twice over, with numerous unfinished runs on various characters. Easily the best RPG ever made, if you ask me. I'm planning on running through it again, from BG1 all the way up to ToB, but not in the near future :)
Call of Duty 4 It's still waiting to be finished, and i intend to do that at some point. While the game is very good, i'm just a bit tired of it's setting, as i've explained before.
Web-based/small games Bloxorz, Space Rangers or all those other small games are exactly what i'm not looking for. As i've explained in my opening post, i'm looking for decent graphics aswell as a good game.
Keep it coming....

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 24/01/2008 05:44:42 So you want something like Morrowind.
You're putting yourself to an extremely high standard there that you'll find hard to beat.
For FPS-RPGs with heavy (throughout the game, not to start) character customization but linear story, try Deus Ex and System Shock 2, the two best in the genre of all time.
For a fun little RPG that'll occupy you for a few days, try Uplink.

Deus Ex Finished twice, but the graphics started being like rusty pikes being driven into my eyes by 2008. It wasn't even good looking when it was released in 2000... Although it is a good game :)
System Shock 2 It's on my to do list, however, the graphics... Yes, it is that important to me. Besides, Bioshock and Deus Ex are already quite similar.
Bioshock Finished it in one day. I was thoroughly annoyed by how easy it was, although i did like the graphics and story. Some of the game design was flawed though... I still wonder why i got the most useful plasmid in the game right at the start.
Mass Effect This would be what i am looking for, but sadly, i don't own an Xbox360. I eagerly wait for the day it's released on the PC though.
I'm not looking for complete non-linearity. Something like Baldur's Gate or even Deus Ex, is also fine, where it's still linear but controlled. Morrowind is indeed a good game, but i'm not looking for a game like TES. I've already played those :)
Keep it coming!

Another vote for System Shock 2. IMO (and many others) it is the high water mark for the genre. If you do not like that I am afraid almost nothing will please you.
And again give Psychonauts a look. As I said before I avoided the game because I was sure it was not my style. Then I had a chance to play it for a week and figured I give it a try (in large part because of the Zero Punctuation review). It really is a lot of fun. I was very pleasantly surprised.

But be aware that it's only a texture upgrade, poly count on models remains the same so the graphic will still be rather.. boxy.
Also about the difficulty.. SS2 is pretty hard on normal already, on the hardest settings it becomes a nightimare where you have to make every shoot count and save your resources religiously. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

Unlikely. Games of that size aren't on Underdogs, nor is it old enough. Its newer than Starcraft!
sorry to disappoint DS, but it is on Underdogs
Its complete, along with the cutscenes. (they work if you play them seperately, haven't gotten them to work ingame yet, they need some ancient codec to work apparently) Its also rather unstable on an XP machine. (atleast for me it crashes almost immediately)

I installed mine directly from the disk and it worked fine on XP here.
Hint: the torrents you may find on the internets will come with all the necessary fan patches

i'll have a look around (near zero torrent experience, so this could get interesting) Might also be able to find an original disk of it somewhere, some places keep games like that in limited stock.

Since you're not much having luck finding a game, might I suggest, oh, I dunno... DOING SOME WORK!!!!

Tell you what, I'll send you my copy of SS2 when you're done, as a present... and KOTOR 2 (which I liked just as much as #1, but then I am weird).
For what it's worth, I'm currently playing Savage 2 and Aquaria.

Ah, Psychonauts... I've been meaning to get this game, I've heard very good things about it. My interest was particularly picked as I learned that one of the writers behind it was Erik Wolpaw, one of the two brains behind one of my all-time-favourite game commentary sites, the surreal, very funny yet very defunct Old Man Murray (hasn't been updated since 2001, so reading it has become a bit of a time-warp). More recently, he's also written dialogs for Portal.

SS2 is superb, but as mentioned up thread, some people have simply never got it to work on XP. if you've patched it fully and it still doesn't run, short of VMWare there isn't much you can do.
Psychonauts on the other hand will run on XP and is brill. [IMAGE REMOVED] |

ugh, if i learned something through gaming its that the graphics are about the LEAST important factor. It can has all the shiney graphics of the world they wont help make a crap Gameplay into a good game. As long as you dont accept that you miss out on the very best games of gaming history.
as for a game suggestion, besides SS2 already mentioned.. Dungeon Keeper 1 Battlezone 1 maybe 2 too but i like the feel of the first one much better Homeworld Syndicate X-Com

Actually, The Witcher is a pretty awesome game, with pretty much none of the "Omg you have to be Paladin-like good or nber-demon-bent-on-controlling-the-world evil" like in most RPGs, like NWN (which I also love btw). In The Witcher you make a choice and what happens later in the game because of that choice (certain people won't talk to you or do business with you or get killed off entirely) is not something you can just reload your way out of, which means your decisions actually matter.
Honestly, I wouldn't take yahtzee reviews too seriously, because while he's honest and gave me a few good laughs on the review of The Witcher, as well as other games, he doesnt' sound like a person that has any kind of gaming knowledge since The Witcher is very easy to get into and understand (and no, I never read the manual myself before playing - I tried reading it earlier today but it is more complicated than the game itself).
The combat is a variation of point and click where you rely on timing for comboes, along with some limited magical abilities. The menues are very easy to navigate:
You have 3 sword styles; strong, fast and group and two sword types (steel and silver). Then you have base abilities like INT, STR and so forth that you can also upgrade, plus some magical signs. On the surface, there are a lot of stuff to choose from but I know that Yahtzee haven't played it at all since you get bronze, silver and gold skillpoints as you gain higher levels and that the bronze SP fits the bronze colored skills, silver SP fits the silver colored skills and well, you should be able to guess where the gold ones go by now. Making potions isn't a problem either as it automatically tells you if you have the ingredients for them on the left where your formulas are (highlights with white text) and that you can double click a recipe to make it if ingredients are present.
How this is more complicated than analyzing a Diablo skill tree is beyond me, which is why I know he hasn't even tried it

Edited by: Forando on 26/01/2008 03:05:56 I've heard a lot of people really likes Jade Empire, I haven't tried it myself. It might be worth looking into.
Shadowgrounds. Although it doesn't sound exactly like what you're after, I have to mention it. It's somewhat short, the story isn't epic in anyway, but it's good action, atmospheric and it's been one of the best surprises I've had as of late (I just bought it blindly on Steam). It resembles the old Alien Breed (top down shooter on Amiga) game quite a deal. The music also has a tint of retro! Bah, perhaps I'm just a sucker for it, big time! To save you the trouble; You be wise not to expect the sequel (Survivor) to match it's entertainment. (It was pure ****oo!)
Vampire: Bloodlines on the other hand, has an ok storyline, character progression. Might not be the top-notch graphics, but quite entertaining, and lots of weird dialogs and character freedom.
ProgressQuest. Now that's a pearl. It's free. Got world PvP. Large player-base. And if you're interested, I could easily throw you some starter capital if you want to start playing it, since I got a level 88 Double Wookiee on the Oobag server. Ohh, and the grind ain't bad in ProgressQuest. Lately, there's been quite a few worn-out raiders from WoW joining up, so the lowbie areas are not all deserted.
GuildWars. I suppose it covers most of your requirements and it's undeniable eye-candy. However it's story might seem vibrant, it's very linear. It's PvP system is entertaining for a while, but nothing to write home about. Good point is, although some consider it a MMO, it's without monthly fee. It might not last months, but the areas to explore, the stories to be told, I can easily justify when looking at the price of the package. Some have played it for a few hours and been terrible bored, so I figure it's one of those extreme "Love it or hate it"-game.
And I'm backing up those who said Baldurs Gate II, Planescape Torment and System Shock II. They are hands down some of the best games I've played.
Edit: Added typos and stuff.
Enjoy, and fly safe..
