This movie sucks. I'm sorry, but it just does.
Here are my problems:
1) In the near future the sun is dying (after 5 billion years there is suddenly a problem? please). 2) In the near future, we have the technology to restart a star, but it takes a couple years to travel from Earth to the sun? 3) The ship is not spinning, nor under thrust, but there's gravity? 4) The ship has traveled 2/3 of the way from the Earth to the Sun, yet the Sun is several hundred times its apparent magnitude from Earth? *) There's a fire on board the ship and their best plan is to pump it full of O2 rather than vent it to space, or at least use an inert gas? Seriously?
I may add more later, but I'm too annoyed right now.

OK, I've thought about it a little bit more, and it's kinda like 2001 meets Nightmare on Elm Street meets Night of the Living Dead. And just when you think it's over, you're on another ship with a random girl and a zombie. WTF?
I rented this because so many Eve players swore it was a great movie. I now have to conclude that they're violating their local drug laws (or they're all in the Netherlands).
This movie is crap, and I urge all Eve-goers to eschew it. Save yourself the pain and rent something sci-fi from the 70s. Something like Concorde: Airport '79. It's not worse, at least.

there's science fiction, and then there's science fiction. sunshine is the latter, and frankly, more enjoyable for it.
jump-starting a dying star? great idea. an in depth discussion of the mechanics of jump-starting a star, and the possible wider ramifications would bore the snot out of me.

Sunshine is a great film if you ignore the fact it is not the most realistic film ever. Plus the soundtrack is f*ing amazing!

hehe, somehow i knew that unrealistic horrorfest would get pulled into it. Frankly, i expected utter unrealistic "explanations" for whatever they were doing in that film, so didn't go to watch it. Maybe i should, just to laugh my head off.

What sci-fi movie nowadays is really scientific anyways?
It was a decent movie, the whole part where the computer couldnt calculate beyond a certain part in the sun;s gravity made me smile, instead of stupid stuff like 'the time dilation and wormhole effect = 42, therefore time will go backwards...' crap ****es me off.. this film didnt pretend to know anything after the speed of light.....
one movie that really ****ed me off was War of the Worlds... come on.. bacteria? seriously...... Sunshine did well.

Go listen to the original orson wells broadcast or the jeff wayne musical, or read the bloody book, the story of war of the worlds is older than the crappy tom cruise and annoying-blonde-kid-hollywood-lens-flare-bonanza

Too many people these days want science-faction, rather science-fiction or commonly mistake one for the other. Just because in someday, technology or time frame resembles the real world as it currently is doesn't mean that its set in the real world, for all you know it could be set in a completely different universe that's exactly the same except green means stop and red means go on traffic lights.
If you want a thinking man's film get a thinking man's film if you want something that's not so tough on the noggin get something like that. The ops criteria for turning around saying this film are crap are kinda invalid because no where does the film claim to be realistic, in his opinion its crap but then thats his personal taste not something thats fact based on the listed set of criteria.
Wonder what ya gonna think of cloverfield then. ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Mail [email protected] if you have questions. -Hango

I loved Cloverfield, but it's an entirely different kind of animal.
The problem with Sunshine is that it seems to be a thinking man's movie, but can't seem to decide what kind. It's got an exploration side, a horror movie side, a psychological thriller side.
It's trying to be too many things without focusing on one of them.
The realistic part is a pet peeve of mine. Either go for it, or don't.
Look at Eve. It's not trying to be a space sim, so I've never complained that things don't work as they should. My problem is when movies, or whatever, are really serious and realistic about some things, but ignore the others because it's too much trouble or they just don't care.
Sunshine reminded me of a movie from the 70s I once saw. It was set on a space station orbiting Earth. And it sucked, but not just because of science. Sometimes there was gravity, sometimes there wasn't, but not because of good reasons, like the characters were on the rim of the station vs. at the central axis. No, there was no gravity at the rim, but some at the axis, but only when they seemed to remember to include. But suddenly, they started talking about how physics really worked, and why one of the characters screwed up by ejecting toxic waste out of the station at the Sun, because the Sun was in front of them when it was ejected. So in most of the movie, physics wasn't mentioned, and I could deal with that. But then suddenly real physics were brought into it, and I was like, "WTF?" You're bringing this in now?
I guess my main problem is consistency. I like Star Trek because they're consistent in giving wild and imaginative ways to explain how things work. I love Gunbuster because it's not at all realistic, but they define their own universe where things work this way. Star Wars too is consistent about not caring a whit how things actually work.
Sunshine isn't consistent at all. It's just a rip-off of 2001 with zombies and other crap thrown in.
It's certainly visually stunning and has great effects, but it's not often that I don't care about a sci-fi movie or its characters the way I don't about Sunshine's.
And, yes, it's my opinion.
Sorry for the long post.

I have to agree. I likewise have been surprised at the number of EVE players who thought this was good.
In addition to your issues (save one described below) it really annoys me at the people they have on this ship. They are freaks and weirdos and more than a little unstable. This is a mission to save the earth. They would not send this lot. They would send anal retentive astronaut types. Clean cut, smart, stable, humorless bunch.
As for the speed to the sun I can kinda see it. At the speed the Apollo mission went it would take something over three years to reach the sun. Yeah this is the future but barring some spiffy new drive tech they are still using rockets. Rockets need lots of fuel. Not only to get you there but to slow you down when you arrive and then enough fuel to drive you back home. And this ship is a lot larger than the Apollo craft. In the end I can live with a 5 year one-way trip.

This I agree with. It's just that if you can do something to jumpstart a star, you ought to be able to give a ship a boost that lets it travel faster. We could do it today if we wanted, it's just that it would cost a fortune. But then again, if you're trying to save the whole world, isn't cost a minor factor?

It is about suspension of disbelief. We do it all the time in movies. We watch LOTR and have no problems with flaming eyeballs on a tower or goblins cuz that is how it works in that realm.
In Sunshine we are assuming a near future. And while they do stuff we cannot we are ok with that. But when stupid crap happens that would never happen it sucks you out of your immersion to go "huh?". That is when a movie fails. Sunshine did that all over the place.

I do not know the specifics of how it is all calculated (first time I can say I am not a rocket scientist and mean exactly that) but there is some tradeoff for adding more fuel. More fuel = more weight which needs more thrust to move so you need more fuel and so on. Becomes a vicious circle and you get to a point of diminishing returns where it is just not worth it even if money was not an issue.
Just being picky though...I would think they could have gotten there more quickly but as I said I can go with five years ok too (chalk it up to artistic license).

Visually I liked it, but it really suffered in the script department. I don't know if they dumbed it down to make the $$$ but it was all pretty obvious and stale. I expected a lot more tbh.
