I'm new to EVE, and I've decided that I'm going to train in the direction of the Maelstorm. What ships do you think I should use before it? How long do you think it'll take me until I can use it? Skill/Fitting questions?
Thanks a lot for the help. :)

use it or use it well? 5 months or so to use it without loseing it in a lvl 4 mission i would think 1 year or more to use it will if you out all your SP into relavant skills. the ship line you want to follow is rifter/cyclone/maelstrom,
Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". |

... and if you have to get something bigger than a rifter before you can afford the cyclone, grab a rupture. Its not usually shield tanked, but for running lvl 2 missions as you save up for the cyclone it could be used.

Alright, thanks for the reply both of you. Any suggestions on fittings?

rupture chews up the level 2's, but you're kind of expected to armour tank it. But that's ok, you will inevitably want to fly some other armour tanking ship at some point aye?

The Rupture is the best cruiser in the minmatar lineup. But its also pretty darn ugly and not particularly cheap (for a cruiser). I flew one for a while but these days when I need a cruiser I go for my Stabber. It costs almost half the price and can be fitted out almost as well. Its certainly good enough for level 2 missions.
I also bought a Hurricane instead of a Cyclone. Its more expensive but it also looks pretty nifty . And lets face it, you will probably be flying it for about 4 to 5 months so you might as well be flying a ship you like the look of.
When it comes to fittings that will depend entirely on what you plan to do with it. Will you be doing pvp? pve? group pvp? missions? or rats? All of those functions can be found in loadout threads either at this forum or at the battleclinic. You'll have a few months to figure out your loadout. I suggest you don't neglect the basic skills either like electronics and engineering since they will determine what your fitting looks like as well. And of course theres the learning skills. Since you are planning a 6 month to 1 year skill train it really is advantageous to get all your learning skills up to level 4 and then get the second generation learning skills as well.
