I'm certainly enjoying it, and it will make a nice counterpoint to Eve for me, though it will never replace Eve.
For a role out, it's been pretty smooth, and once things have been tightened up and promised future content added it should be a damned good game.
But it does really, really beg for propper full PvP servers. No NPC's, just players beating on players!

1GB of RAM is pretty much the minimum nowadays. If you don't have that, i'd wager the rest of your PC is near minimum spec aswell.
If you game a bit and want to play the newer games in a somewhat smooth fashion, you might want to think of a new PC entirely.

I'm on a free trial, only it's not exactly free - someone has to buy the game first and can then send an invite to a friend. The invite sends you an activation key to play for free for 14 days and a link to the install page to download the client. The link you get though is wrong and the main website has no link to it either - doh!

Played at the end of closed beta, decided to give it a break and go back to Eve after a long-ish absence during open beta. Then I logged in on the first day of pre-release and I havn't logged on since... being back in Eve is more fun at the moment, so I'll probably wait a while before I activate the full subscription. But I must say I enjoyed most of the game. I think the ship combat is great, just right in the realism/fun ratio. Avatar combat is a bit so-so, but it grew on me after a while. Land encounters could use a little more variation.
The thing I think will decide if you stay or not is the conquest system. I think the design is great since it allows both pve and pvp players to take part in the various stages of taking over a port, and if the nations get organized on a server there could be a lot of fun in it.

There's potential but I hated the interface and thought that the non-ship parts of the game were a little.. rubbish. I don't think it's worth playing right now, but I may have another look at it later in the year when things have had time to develop a bit.

PvP sucks and is slanted towards members of nations. Devs stated that pirates win by numbers. PvP is only 5v5 max.
Interface sucks and is clunky.
Ground game sucks
Graphics suck. In no shape or form does it warrant 1G of RAM for that crap. Think Sid Myers had better.
Failed at providing any direction. There is no endgame. There is no creating your own haven like in EvE. There is no sense of ownership other than a boat and a warehouse. You play until you run out of quests.
Lack of quests. Once you do them in a city you have to move to a new city. Quests eventually run out. Quests are your primary source of cash unless you play the market.
Small map. Can't sustain more than a few thousand before its over crowded and the market crashes. They'll need ALOT of servers.
Did I mention PvP sucks?
Cities can be sieged and taken...then revert back to their old ownership after a few days. You dont get to keep them.
City siege combat is limited to 25v25. Thats as epic as it gets. Pirates haven't won a single one yet.
PvP is consentual except in the zones of contention. Finding pvp outside of those is almost like duelling.
Speed doesn't matter. Many of the higher level boats have gun ports facing front and back as well as side to side.
Did I mention pvp sucks?
Thats PotBS in a nutshell. I personally think it was rushed into "live". Its way to rough around the edges for the amount of time they put into it.

i was in beta and just didn't feel like playing it, no real sense of progression. WoW is WAY better and they missed their chance to make a really cool eve-like FFA pvp pirate game..

You have to wonder, with EVE's obvious success why did such a game get spooked into what was essentially the WoW model? Are people still convinced that copying WoW leads to a million subscribers and that EVE is still somehow small time?
I mean, at this point isn't EVE somewhere in the top ten for subscriber numbers? There has to be a reason companies keep shying away from the EVE model. ----- Character back under original management. |

What's amusing is that this thread is full of people saying PoTBS is crap, yet the PoTBS forums are full of EvE people, including some high profile forumers.
I like PoTBS. It's not EvE, its much less hardcore, but still retains some of the interesting bits like a functioning economy and some interesting PvP with genuine consequences.

Do I qualify for high profile? However I didn't post on the PotBS forums yet. I played some beta and now playing it since launch. So far: The avatar part is a sad joke. The swashbuckling it's probably the worst part of any mmorpg that I have ever played. It makes look WoW like the best game made ever. I think the economy has potential. Especially considering that you are basicaly forced to work with other people (or get lots of accounts) and that it has added risk if a port where you have goods you need retrieved is unde attack. The ship sailing and combat is interesting. Nothing to write home about but not to be dissmised. IMO eventualy will settle as a mediocre game where pirates stories fans and naval combat fanatics will stick with it and everyone else will pretty much ignore it.
