Edited by: Oblit3rat1on on 27/01/2008 20:23:14 I wanna get an alt to go salvaging for the missions I'm running, what would be the recommendations for the best ship to train up for to do this? I.e. Ship that can fit most salvagers, yet still have the cargo space to help me avoid having to return to the station every 5 minutes!
Thanks for the advice.

i use gallente destroyer with 4 small tractor beams and 4 salvagers. Meds r 1 afterburner and 1 cap rech t2. Low slots r cargohold expanders t2. Sometimes a bit difficult with cap.
On missions with a lot of salvage i pick loot into a can and then pick all the modules with industrial.

The Catalyst (Gallente Destroyer) is the best in that class, but I'm partial to an Exequror (Gallente Tier 1 Cruiser) ... with Gall cruiser 4 and 3 Cargo Expanders II in the lows, I have a cargohold of 1741m¦ on mine. 2 Tractors and 2 Salvagers in its four highs, 10 MN AB and Large Cap Battery II + 2 free slots in the meds (so that running all modules won't ever drain your cap), and 3 Salvage Tackle rigs.

Any destroyer would probably be a good choice.
They're cheap, fast, easy to fit, and all of them have 8 Highs for tractor beams and salvagers.

I use a Thrasher (Minmatar destroyer), 4 tractors, 4 salvagers, Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners (named 10MN ABs), 2 Expanded Cargohold IIs.
The oversized AB eats most of its PG but it gives it a top speed of close to 1km/sec, which is great for picking up all those scattered deadspace wrecks. Used to have cap problems till I trained my cap skills up, now it works like a champ. ----- My in Eve Profile My BattleClinic Page |

Hurricane cargospace: 2041m3 speed: 2000+m/s (with mwd)
hi 5 tractor beams 3 salvagers mid 100mwd/ab 3 cap rechagers low 6 cargo expanders rigs 3 salave tackle
if you dont use rigs you might want more salvagers so drop a tractor beam a maruder would work even better but whats the point in spending that amount of isk on a ship you only going to use as a salvager ----- Never knock on Death's door; ring the doorbell and run (he hates that) |

Its hard to beat a Destroyer with x4 Tracs and 4 Beams.
I use the Catalyst which used to be my level 1 mission ship.
In the Mids I have an AB of course and a Cap Booster. I never have to buy the CAP ammos as you get enough of them salvaging loot. Many times I don't even need to use it.
I use three Cargo expanders in the lows. If you use the cheapy ones you will have about 500/550 hold capacity, but during some of my salvage operations I picked up a few named expanders and my hold capacity is now at 750. Enough to salvage almost all missions in a single trip. Sometimes I have to jettison the scrap metal and some CAP charges to make a wee bit more room but they are never worth going back for anyway.
What I have found speeds things up is often times you can do two and sometimes three missions in a row before switching to your salvage Destroyer. Just mark each wreck field before leaving to turn in the mission and get another and then go back and salvage all of them at once.
Soon I will be able to use a Micro Warp in which case I think those scattered wrecks will no longer take so long to travel to. If you turn in the mission and then return to the wreck field you are no longer in Dead Space and can use a Micro Warp.

The stabber is my salvager of choice. While it has 2 less high slots than a destroyer, its superior speed helps me get to stray wrecks faster. It also doesnt have any of the cap problem you may encounter running all those salvagers and tractors, especially with a lower skill pt total. The tank will be better than a destroyer too "just in case". Salvager 1 x3 Small Tractor Beam x3 10mn Afterburner/microwarp (your choice on specifics) 2 mid slot shields mods (suit to flavor) 1 signal amplifier II (for the extra target) Nanos/Cargo expanders in the lows Salvage tackle x3

The "best" would probably be one of the marauders with 2 salvage tackle rigs...

The stabber is also my salvager of choice. Here's my setup for it
[Stabber, Salvager] Low: 3x Expanded Cargohold II
Mid: 10MN MicroWarpdrive II Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range Cap Recharger II
High: 4x Small Tractor Beam I 2x Salvager I
Rig: 2x Salvage Tackle I Cargohold Optimization I
You get 1001m¦ cargo space and still above 200m/s without MWD. In case I get a lot of loot, I just drag it along in a can and pick it up later in an industrial (or have an alt following me in an industrial )
I tried an Exequror once, because it has a really large cargobay, but those 4 highs and its slow speed were really annoying me. Maybe I am too accustomed to using 4 tractors by now, but it didn't take long before I returned to the Stabber
As my alt can only fly Caldari I needed an alternative to the stabber, so I came up with a Salvage-Caracal...
[Caracal, Salvager] Low: 2x Expanded Cargohold II
Mid: 10MN MicroWarpdrive II Sensor Booster II, Targeting Range 3x Cap Recharger II
High: 3x Small Tractor Beam I 2x Salvager I
Rig: 2x Salvage Tackle I Cargohold Optimization I
The 5 high slots are nice and the cargobay in this setup isn't too bad with 841m¦. It's somewhat slower than the Stabber at around 150m/s without MWD, but imho still better than Exequror. The Moa might also work, but it's slower and has a smaller cargobay than the Caracal, so I rather "loose" a high slot in favor of speed and cargo. ------------------

I prefer the Harbinger for this job... also u can use any other tier 2 BC as well
they got more cargo then a Catalyst and be much faster!
the fitting should be like this:
4x Tractor / 4x Salvager
1x MWD (u will loot after a mission is done, so u can use this) 3x Cap Recharger II (more or less... different by shiptype)
Into LOWs fit as much Expander II u are able to fit.
Rigs => 3x Salvage Tackle I

I use Exequror, Gallente Cruiser.
High 1 Small tractor 3 Salvager
Medium 1 10mn afeterburner 3 cap recharger t1
Low 3 Expanded Cargohold t2
With Gallente Cruiser 5, i've a cargo of 1860m3.
It fit very well on mission L4, i can loot any mission without i have to go to the station till i've lootet/salvaged anything.

With 8 highslots a 5 tractors, 3 salvagers setup is definatly the way to be. Assuming you got decent skills and Tackle rigs you'll eat through wrecks faster than you can supply them with just 4 tractors. And incase you're into looting you can use one to drag a can without too much loss.
I use a Thrasher myself, with a 1mn ab. Used a 10mn for a while, but since I drag a can more often then I do not its not worth the extra speed.

I use a Kronos with 4 tractors, 3 salvagers, MWD, 4 Cargos, the rest cap mods, 2 salvager rigs.
Since i switched to this ship my looting time has been cut by 3/4s, the tractor beam bonus and a 80 km loot bubble diameter makes hoovering up obscenely fast, in most missions now i have worked out where to sit my killing ship to ensure i can loot the whole thing without moving when i come back in the Kronos. Its probably paid for itself in the 2 weeks or so I have been running it.

BCs is the best ship class for salvaging, and the Hurricane is the best of those. Destroyers have to little cargo space and get cap issues when fitting a mwd, and BSs are just too slow.
Of all the BCs with 8 highs the Hurricane has the best cargo capacity and speed.

I use something very similar, except i put a nano II in the last low instead of a ce II. would work even better if there were medium tractor beams in game :P
imagine large tractor beams, i'd prolly get a typhoon for salvaging!

WHOA check this out. Never knew there was a ship with salvage bonuses. Double the range and velocity. Hands down I have not seen anything that even comes close to this ship for the job. Skill wise its out of my league for the time being, but cool enough I am on the right skill path for it.
You just put this baby on my wish list for sure.
Hull: Megathron Class Role: Marauder
Geared toward versatility and prolonged deployment in hostile environments, Marauders represent the cutting edge in todayÆs warship technology. While especially effective at support suppression and wreckage salvaging, they possess comparatively weak sensor strength and may find themselves at increased risk of sensor jamming. Nevertheless, these thick-skinned, hard-hitting monsters are the perfect ships to take on long trips behind enemy lines.
Developer: Duvolle Labs
Duvolle Labs manufactures sturdy ships with a good mix of offensive and defensive capabilities. Since the company is one of New EdenÆs foremost manufacturers of particle blasters, its ships tend to favor turrets and thus have somewhat higher power output than normal.
Gallente Battleship Skill Bonus: 5% bonus to large hybrid weapon damage and 2% bonus to the velocity factor of stasis webifiers per level
Marauder Skill Bonus: 7.5% bonus to repair amount of armor repair systems and 7.5% bonus to large hybrid weapon tracking per level
Role Bonus: 100% bonus to large hybrid weapon damage, 100% bonus to range and velocity of tractor beams

I use a Caldari Destroyer with this setup:
Highs: 4x Small Tractor Beam 4x Salvager I
Mids: Afterburner 3x Cap Rechargers (various kinds)
Lows: Expanded Cargohold
It works really well, and basically never runs out of Cap. All of the destroyers are really useful salvage boats.

Best ship depends on how you salvage obviously, but I fail to recognize most of the ships mentioned in this thread as best.
The Eris used to be pretty much THE salvaging ship - but it was nerfed, and marauders introduced, hence I - without doing the actual numbers - reckon the matari marauder will come out on top, followed by the rorqual. For the old school, using sub t2 Bs vessels I'd like to consider the top swarm(depending on utility): Sabre, Stabber Fleet Issue, Armageddon, Coercer and in fact the dominix/ishtar. The hurricane is awesome aswell.
If however you start adding attributes to it, such as cost, skills, must be able to enter high sec etc etc - there's a variety of alternatives.

But the rorq can't come in hi-sec and I ran the numbers Kronos will come out on top based on cargospace. Speed isn't so much an issue with the huge tractor bonus.
Geddon is what I used to use, maxes out at 4100m3 / 280ms or 2800m3 / 350ms. I now use the Navy Thron, see the picture it's shiny, because it can hold 4800 and still move at 300ms (any higher and you get the 'Can must be closer than 1500m' error when trying to loot on the move)
