Thread after thread, week after week, year after year all about the same thing: the terrible lag people experience throughout eve but in particular in major trade hubs, major ratting systems and major fleet battles.
The common egg/chicken argument is: "Cant CCP improve their hardware?" "Well they could but then everyone would just do more until the same situation arose."
So an elegant solution: 200k subscribers. Working on US dollars thats 200,000 x $15 = $3,000,000 per month in subscriber payments to CCP. $36m per year.
It seems to me that instead of grabbing as many people as possible and just adding to the mire CCP should move the game into a limited entry mode.
Each time you lose a subscriber you can accept a new account. No deactivations = no new activations. You can calculate exactly what your income is to your costs pay everyone a salary and work the problems out. If you manage to improve things to the extent that the game becomes 100% playable for your vast subscriber base you can take people in in drafts.
Seems to me you are making an awful lot of money right now. Surely to continue to take in new subs when you are FULLY aware of the games current design and implementation problems is both greedy and lacking in morals.

Other then bad business this will also kill the dreams of people who want to actually play Eve. Seriously, being rejected from a game because of a subscriber cap is kind of bogus. I got mad enough when Cabals closed beta decided to temp ban all American testers. ------------------------------------------------- Attention Devs, for every isk you send me one member of your family will be returned safely.

There are in the process of upgrading their computers to (IIRC) an actual supercomputer. A computer that I believe will be among the most powerful not in government/university hands.
So there are investing in the game.
And FWIW I play a lot and rarely find lag to be a problem. When I do find lag an issue is exactly when I would expect it to (in Jita or a fleet situation). Mostly seems fine.

That's a good idea from a player's point of view, but a terribly bad one from a business' point of view.
CCP's current strategy is aggressive marketing, they're trying to get as many new subscribers as possible. They're even getting on the Steam platform. Most likely, the way they see it, there's going to be lag whether there's a 200k limitation or not, and people leaving because of it, and they might as well get as many people subscribed as possible.
Besides, lag is only present on a few areas. Try roaming around in high-sec during a Sunday. The hubs will have hundreds of people and horrible lag, but a high amount of systems will only have a few people. The servers can support a lot more people, the problem is that most insist on hanging around in the same locations. Some people look around until they find an area free of lag, other people come to the forums...

<sarcasm> I have a better idea! Let's introduce log-in queues! </sarcasm>
Seriously, any strategy which is founded on *NOT* letting people play is a stupid idea. It's stupid as a business strategy, and it's bad for the game.
Seriously, think about it. If CCP decided to cap subscribers, EVE would be come a closed game. The only people who can play it are the ones who are already playing. Once this happens, CCP will get bad PR and will find it hard to get new subscribers to replace the slow, but steady, loss of old subscribers. Or in other words, it would be the beginning of the end with regards to EVE. Also, don't forget that this game already puts off a lot of newer players because of the steep learning curve.

The lag is really unacceptable in some places but alliance warfare isn't all there is and eve isn't exactly completely halted. _

Undoubtedly my favorite aspect of Eve is that it is a persistent setting, and whatever i do (admittedly far from epic at this point) is part of the overall narrative. But . . . perhaps there are other clusters out there, evolving along radically different axes of cultural and technological progression. The game mechanics do seem pretty robust. Perhaps a Milky Way currently recovering from an epochal war with a far more virulent strain of drones; something like "Eve: The Dark Age" where salvage might be the main economy. The point is that maybe it's time to open a new server while still retaining the idea of a unique and persistent narrative. Thus the real issue is getting another Jita or four and giving more 'empire' space and places for new characters to start out, current canon or not. Expanding the number of systems further out into 0.0 is necessary by virtue of the current story line, but this in a way has and will continue to suffer from 'diminishing returns' as a disproportionately small number of pilots will be able to use the space while still increasing the load on a finite number of existing civilized trade hubs. And finally, perhaps the idea of 'isk sinks' could be further extended to include 'bandwidth sinks'. Extra dimensions of server real-estate within the current locales (station space anyone? revolutionary breakthroughs in jump tech?) that could be distributed to less used portions of the CCP super-computer while most-importantly still providing immediate transitions to the high volume areas.

Yeah..im sure CCP is going to put a cap on how much isk...i mean money they make off of their product.
Sure CCP needs to offer more incentive for people to spread out beyond empire but they can't really force players to go out there. Better minerals are out in lowsec, apparently the gas clouds as well. One thing they need to do is increase the ratting aspect of lowsec. Not that I really care but I did spend a year in lowsec but ended up just doing L4s in empire since it was far better iskwise.
Sure ccp is going to prefer to be slightly successful as opposed to pushing for more.

There's already plenty of natural subscriber turnover.
If they wanted to limit the number of people on the cluster they could start with getting rid of the 3-4k farmers that are online at any one time.

Edited by: Kerfira on 28/01/2008 08:31:46 The OP fails horribly in 2 arguments!
1. 36m $ is NOT a large amount of money for a MMORPG game company! 2. The total amount of people is not creating lag, stupid game design rewarding blobbing (not just in fleet combat) is.
There are several types of blobbing.
- Fleet blobbing. Solvable! Implement more anti-blob weapons (like the titan DD)
- Mission system blobbing. Solvable! Remove quality level and system sec.level from reward calculation (replace the last with low-sec and 0.0 modifier).
- Trade system blobbing. Possibly not solvable.

One idea to solve fleet blobbing I've had is this:
BS (maybe cruiser) sized module. Activates on ship death or pilot activation. Destroys ship on activation. If less than 100 ships on grid, absolutely no effect apart from destruction of ship. If more than 100 ships on grid, the fun starts (damage and range going up with number of ships): 100-150 ships: 20-50km range, 500-3000 damage. 150-200 ships: 50-100km range, 3000-15000 damage. 250-300 ships: 100-150km range, 15000-60000 damage. 300+ ships: 150km range, WTFPWN damage.
(ship numbers are probably too high, since even 200 ships lag the server to hell, but that could easily be adjusted)
A module like this WOULD mean that eventually people wouldn't bring blobs to battle, simply because it'd be too costly/risky to do so.
Note that any idea along these lines CAN'T be directed against only enemy ships, since there is no easy (i.e. doable by the server) way to determine which ships are hostile. It HAS to target all ships.
While we probably all agree that it would be best if EVE COULD handle the large fleet battles, the sad truth is that it can't, and is unlikely to. If the server can handle 200, people will bring 300 etc. CCP should realise that fact, accept it, and work from there. Its no good working from the assumption that the server can handle these fights when it so obviously can't. Realise what can and can't be done, and do the things that can!

Why cap subscribers to satisfy the extreme minority of A) Jita huggers or B) Fleet-fight fiends that are the main crybabies when it comes to the "OMFGBBQLAG" deal? Count me out. What makes you think it is illegal? It's not like they have to let people play. It's just in their best interest.
Incidentally, OP, try to think your way through posts before making them. The idea was pretty stupid, and the evidence you used was that people on the forums are saying there is a problem. You never get real information from what people are whining about on the forums. Never. Don't even think about it.

Great business plan I hope the OP is not working in position to define business strategy for his company.
Lag is here to stay. Lag is a problem of every single MMORPG when a lot of ppl are doing something together in the same place. Lag was always an issue in fleet battles. Even when 10k ppl online was considered to be record-breaking, the lag in fleet battles was horrible. CCP had upgraded their hardware, but the server population increased as well. The only way to solve the lag in fleet battles is to totally rethink territorial warfare mechanics. I don't know how to do it and I can't see this coming from CCP either.

Isnt the limit to the number of people the hardware (not the current infrastructure) can support alot higher than the current subscriber base. I remember something about tranquility only using a relativly small amount of its total processing capability atm. Once they work out the best approach to distributed computing on tranquility it should be able to support even greater numbers quite happily.

That's because "most normal folks" in this game have a hard time thinking outside the box, taking acceptable risks, thinking in an entrepreneurial fashion, and in general don't want to do the hard work of scouting/researching/supplying/exploiting places that are lucrative but more difficult than average to access.
Think CCP put those small and isolated pockets of lowsec (think 2 or 3 systems either dead-ended or surrounded by highsec), or those highsec pockets that require lowsec travel to get to, in there just at random? Negative, buster. They're there so that people who have the stones to take the risk can become rich...if they dare.
Stopping lag, in one easy step:
Get. The Fark. Out. Of. Jita. (replace Jita with any 'hub' system that people congregate in like cattle)

Perhaps the time has come for the expansion of empire based solar systems since it seems like players prefer these locations to low sec or to 0.0 systems. I would suggest adding constellations to the busier empire regions to see if this causes the players to spread out more evenlly in the game. If this does not work, perhaps a rearrangement of stargates will cause a shakeup that will spread the players more evenly in the empire. The last thing we need is more 0.0 systems for the big alliance to control.

If you can't figure out how to find your own quiet corner, so sorry, you are only average player. Please try again.
This is just wrong.
We have had gangs of 20-30 people crash in SYNDICATE because of what is happening in Tpar in Period Basis. So no, it's not just the jita or blobbers who feel the pain of the lag these days. It's happening in 30 vs. 30 fights aswell.
Whil the OP is an obvious and self-proclaimed troll, I think I read somewhere that the goal was to get 300k subscribers. And a massive amount of money was to be spent on the marketing part( I can't for the life of me remember where I saw/read it, but possibly a dev blog?). Maybe they should shift the focus a bit, and pump more cash into creating less lag environment and answering petetions of players, rather than cater for possible costumers?
I ofcourse acknowledge I have no idea of the inner workings of CCP and how they prioritise their cash. This is just the impression I've got.

Well to the OP, it's a silly ideea from the point of view of CCP, they need to make money.. more money the better :) Now the only thing that could resemble what you are saying it would be to loose lots and lots of their customers because they can't provide the services they supposed to.. meaning their loss would be bigger then the gain of new customers.
This will never happen, and you know why? because us, the customers, are stupid... I know I am, stayed 2 years in a MMO just waiting for the next patch that would make the game enjoyable for me, see ...next patch,project,improvement,add-on,fix whatever... the bone dangling in front of my eyes
Now I found myself returned to Eve for 1 year and something, and have this Need for speed in front of my eyes.. not new ships and skills, the need for speed.... waahh Still in my numerous major fleet battles, I found myself once maybe twice where I had a no lag in a fleet battle ( that's 1 year of constant 0.0 fighting). Prolly I will stay for 2 years mark then will go and look elsewhere a bone to chase.
Seriously though, I didn't find anywhere yet, what the deal with 80% of people participating in a fleet battle are lagging to death while the other 20% are having a blast by killing them with little to no lag? I mean, I have lost 3 or 4 ships in a row to invisible enemies... that's no fun at all, I begun to play with 2 characters on 2 computers to increase my chance in the lag lottery but it seems I'm not very lucky yet. :(
Couldn't it be possible, that you could share the love, at least make all of us lag the same?
Anyways for what it's worth I like CCP people, at least they post on the forums, they don't have the "ignore it, maybe it will go away" attitude.

Pretty sure what you're suggesting is illegal.
What makes you think it is illegal? It's not like they have to let people play. It's just in their best interest.
Refusal to trade legislation. obviously not everywhere has the same rules but pretty sure that england (where the servers are) does have it.
could also come under discrimination, letting some people play and telling others to bugger off.

You know, I know of a government that tried to regulate the amount of income its citizens could make amongst other things that seemed good at the time. I believe that government folded in 1990 and the country has yet to really rebound from its foolishness.
You know how quickly this would kill CCP? Within the month of this being implimented they would scare off any potentally new individual from even trying eve as they would have to:
1. Hope that they were at the end of a short list 2. Would have to check back routinely to make sure the list was moving 3. Would really, really want to get into EvE in the first place to put up with that BS.

so why is it getting worse? couple of years ago a 300 man battle was great and hardly laggy at all now you cant have a 100 man battle without crashing the servers?

and with all the hardware upgrades 10 100 man fights in different places should be easily managable but no one single 300 man fight brings the WHOLE server to its knees which it didnt do a ferw years ago ccp are obviopusly doing something wrong, has anyone informed the prigrammers that 'need for speed' is aboutimproving the server and not making different nanoships?

Till the ccp *****es give up on their no sharding bull**** and shard eve, I'm gone. It was a good idea while eve was small but now the lagfest sucks ass. CCP needs to stop beating the meat and get a fuc.kin clue. Until they pull their thumbs out of their asses, Im keeping my 2 account fees. EVE used to be such a great game... now it's a big cryfest of nerfage.

Lag in eve is ever present.
A 5 v 5 lags, but isnt much, not normally enough to change the outcome of the fight.
The problem is the objectives of 0.0 alliances, they have to have goals, CCP keeps screwing this up royally.
They seem to have no idea what goes on, or they are so addicted to their grand vision that they dont care about making the game playable now.
Titans: Anti blob weapon? Yes they are usefull against as many small ships as you can pack into a small area.
Does it take a lot of effort to build one? yes Does this mean the alliance owning it will do everything to protect it? yes Does this mean the opposition will have to do even more, including bring more ships to kill it? YES
Cyno jammers. No cap ships for the attackers, so you need 40+ battleships and many man hours to take it out.
If the pos is properly defended then you're basically boned.
Carriers+fighters Fighters cause lag, but are immune to it and just keep on killing, so causing lag actually benefits the side with a lot of carriers.
Sov... Directly linked to pos's, no real limit on how many you can have up other than how many moons are in the system, each and every system is the same. Stront timing as well as its own massive HP/regen/defences mean it will ALWAYS cause blob fights.
CCP know these things, they know that they have caused the blobs, they know that people want to win and will bring more anyway and so they do nothing.
EvE is on a pretty serious downward spiral in terms of large scale fights, and small scale PVP is being killed off by CCP for some reason (exploration, lets put the carebears somewhere you cant see and cant warp too without spending an age probing for, while leaving local alone, meaning they have ages to flee and hide)
They also want to remove static belts and add gate guns in 0.0 eventually... what do CCP want the left overs of eve to look like?

throttle the number of connections allowed on the server at one time to only 10000 and no system can have more than 80 people in it except jita that can have no more than 200 people in it Trashed sig, Shark was here |
