Originally by: Marshall Zhukov Steam will have no affect on EVE as Steam will have nothing to do with the EVE servers. CCP just are going to use Steam to promote EVE and Sierra or whoever owns Steam will make some bonus money on people signing up for EVE via Steam. Maybe in this way CCP can also close the completelly open trial and have new trials setup via Steam which could possibly help reduce the number of Chinese ISK farmer spammers.
You didnt read his post did you. No, you didnt.
Anyway, to the OP I do worry about the influx of warm bodies on an already topped server system. But a lot of what you're feeling is actually burnout.

Just be glad CCP isnt salesmen lead. Or we'd have something of the standards of EA Games.

40000 players right now, hardware dealing with it ok so far, ok until population booms in local, which is very common in wars between big alliances.
Not true. You must have missed all the lag in lowsec / normally populated empire these days.
Quote:
Lets say we need 10k more online to be able to afford the new super computer, By the time we hit 50k, we will lag like we are playing 20feet under water, shortly afterwards eve will be upgraded, and all will be well.
The last thing a well-run company would do if it needed to invest in hardware/infrastructure urgently is to spend millions on marketing (like CCP is doing). You spend it on fixing the perceived issues or even take up a loan to fix them. So the marketing push has other reasons (e.g. compensating loss of customers or bad press as much as possible, or not perceiving any problems and thinking that EVE is ready to scale).
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...

I disagree. The redistribution of wealth due to changes in the t2 ship production market have made eve alot more fun since then.

Not to sound offensive, but speaking as someone who was once an MMO/Game developer, the Marketing people don't have a clue.
Most of them that I encountered during the last few years don't play video games. They make strange demands on the development team (their research suggests a puke green UI would be favorable) and tout things that either aren't going to be part of the game, or they think should be part of the game but aren't implementable.
What's more, they get away with some stuff that developers, QA, and pretty much anyone else would be fired for.
Like leaving "marketing builds" of games and console emulators that are on disks at malls, where any Joe Schmoe could find them, then upload them to the internet.
Oh, and you're right. The game has changed. Its far too crowded. Not only do they need to update and upgrade their server side hardware, but I also think they need to add more systems to the game.
And, as heretical as this sounds, I think they might benefit from CONSIDERING sharding the game into two servers.
That's just my take.
