Looking at Carbon Nanotubes, I see a distinct possibility.
They are strong enough it seems, to contain vacuum and be less dense than the surrounding air, ie it makes things float.
If say you built a ship with these in it to make it airborne (don't tell me it wouldn't be an advantage to have aircraft carriers inland), would it still be technicaly oart of the navy or the airforce?
And the advantage of Aircraft afaik is the firepower deployed over range, in conjunction with the British built railgun it would be interesting to see if Battleships made a comeback with such extreme range....

Well, yea I was suggesting an airbourne navy, Aircraft carrier and all 
I know Zeppelins/Blimps are big for the small gondola, but they are still carrying the mass of the Helium and the gondola, wheras the Nanotubes are light in themselves and contain nothing to generate the lift.
And for power, yea nuclear looks to be the most logical option, if we make a breakthrough with ITER (unlikely but strager things have happened) then fusion could work as the power generator as it has a lower power/density ratio.
Recoil..... maybe some sort of a sail to increase air resistance while firing.

The sail would increase the surface area, perpendicular to the line of fire. The mast would have to be strong as it would take most of the recoil, transfering it to the surrounding air.
The ship still gets pushed back but the increased surface area increased air resistance.

Hmm, when/if Navys stop operating purely in water bodies, would the airforce just be assimilated into the other two?
There was something in the last few years about removing the RAF and ammalgamating it with the Navy I think....

Well, if any powerblock builds an Orbital Elevator it will be the first thing to be attacked by another power, hence deffences/militarisation of the entire huma sphere of infulence is inevitable.

Theres the possibility to transmit electricity right? Gauss or Tessla, can't remember which but remote transmission of electricity via radio harmonics.
Perhaps something like the Spider tank in Eve, Carriers transfering power to frontline Battleships to fire the railguns?
