So... I've noticed a common trend of attacking either Aspies/Autists, or more specifically often, "self-diagnosed aspies". Yes, we know it's the #1 self-diagnosed mental condition right now, because among the many many symptoms listed, it covers everything from being socially awkward, to a different thinking pattern, to the part of just being special, so it basically covers every teens' fantasy explanation for their problems. Yes, we know it has a funny name, if you choose to add an extra S, and respell the ending as "burgers". This is not news. It's also not very original.
I just wanted to ask if people ever considered how many people they might be insulting who are clinically diagnosed? Potentially by multiple specialists? Believe it or not, it wouldn't make it into the DSM if it wasn't for the fact that some people actually do have it. And some of us, might even be the folks backing you up in a fleet engagement, scouting out your next kill, or ensuring those corp ships end up at the POS you need them, when you need them.
People like *cough*Xenuria*cough* obviously have special needs of some sort. But it's a really shoddy excuse to throw around attacks on wide swaths of people. Try to narrow your insults, like insulting pedophiles! (Completely unrelated to the last sentence, I assure you!)
Also, as my "inb4", yes, I'm completely aware how much humiliation I just set myself up for in this thread. So, um... have fun. |

You know how many pedophiles there are? Self diagnosed or clinically diagnosed as pedophiles. Wouldnt making fun of them just be the same thing you are trying to stop us from doing?

Aspergers is basically bullshit. It is "high functioning autism". If you had real aspergers, your parents would know before you were walking, and you'd have been diagnosed as a baby. But no. Millions of nerds with no social skills decide that they must have aspergers because they fail at life, and self diagnose, which is entirely BS. Its just as bad as the ADD self diagnosers / misdiagnosers.
The millions of self-diagnosing fools who are rationalizing are a goddamn insult to people who actually have autism. I studied this **** for several years and have an autistic cousin - I know aspergers / autism.
Just so you know, among *psychologists*, most ADD / ADHD / Aspergers diagnoses are wrong. The DSM IV diagnostic criteria are too vague and generalized.
Also, Xenuria doesn't have aspergers. He's just a dimwitted childlover.

I think it's very brave of you to take a stand for such a hurt and misunderstood minority. Although not a sufferer, my life has too been touched by Autism. Thank you for taking your time to express your feelings in the matter, and I for one will make an effort to stop using Autism as the butt of jokes. I hope other pilots join me in doing this and make New Eden a welcoming place for people who are a little different. |

We will discuss how aspergers apperently doesnt exist, so those people will be diagnosed with hallucinations.
As well how it is fun to make fun of people who are different/inferior and we shall search through all DSM to find the pyschology to why that is. Also why it is normal to do so. Signature removed, CCP Phantom |

Labels like these will always be used by people who just don't know or care how much it hurts people. These uses in no way relate to the people who identify with those labels, only to those that use them. Ignore them or pity them, there is no point in being offended by them (although sometimes it can be hard not to be).
Also, while someone might be diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, that doesn't mean he or she is Asperger. It's just one of their qualities, and not even a defining quality in most cases. In other words, treat a diagnosis like that as a part of you but not as the whole of you, when you manage that you'll be one step closer to coping with it.
As for whether Aspergers is a valid DSM-V diagnosis, that's hardly relevant. The label means something to those that identify themselves with it and it means something to those that use it. When someone asks you to refrain from using a term as a derogatory remark it's hardy appropriate to start debating the validity of the term in it's intended use. |

By that logic, the fact that I call myself the Red Power Ranger and identify with it means that Red Power Ranger is now an identity for which I should be able to expect you to recognize and for which you should be shunned and shamed if you choose to ignore it or to poke fun at me for identifying with it. It's just a insult, or curse if you will, e.g. wishing harm upon someone for which illnesses and afflictions are quite in vogue now that asking god to damn everything has lost it's power.
If you get insulted by that then the problem lies 100% with you. Just stop being insulted by it. I don't get insulted either when I see people calling others fat ugly neckbears. Even though I am in fact fat, ugly and in need of a shave.
Yes it's very sad that there are people who have such illnesses or syndromes or afflictions or whatever. But that's the point in the wishing it upon someone else as an insult.

Then I guess this point in the Terms of service is irrelevant:
Quote:2. You may not use any abusive, defamatory, ethnically or racially offensive, harassing, harmful, hateful, obscene, offensive, sexually explicit, threatening or vulgar language. (Alternate spelling or partial masking of such words will be reprimanded in the same manner as the actual use of such words.)
I'd suggest you also reconsider your view of "appropriate" use of any insults.
It is very sad, that your trivialising and generalising of this issue in the guise of popular culture in any way seriously represents anything other than the lack of any values by some people. I fail to see anything to respect about it at all.
There's a big difference between being able to not be emotionally affected by crass insults and accepting them as "valued". Case and point: You simply say stop being affected by them, but then say that there is purpose to an insult? What kind of garbage are you trying to make people swallow here? |

Obviously as this site and the game in fact are CCP's property they can damn well ask us to do what they want, up to and including the not mentioning of specific species of fish if they so wish. As such they have the full right to censor all the nasty insults all over the forums and apply full consequences of those broken rules. For some reason they don't unless it actually gets out of hand.
and oh god the "values" argument. Should I start thinking of the children as well? The point I'm making is that if you get insulted by something someone does or says without them even vaguely attempting to insult you, then you are doing it wrong and should HTFU. Too many people in this world feel it's their right to cry victim over every little thing they don't like and imho it's just pathetic. |
