ok we all know from the PF that Caldari Prime had to be terra formed to support human life, now the question is how was the planet before terra forming? was it just unsuitable to human life? or all life in general? this is a deep question because if there was no native life on the planet how did the caldari survive after reverting to barbarism? did they bring huge stocks of wildlife and vegetation with them? or did native life adapt to a human friendly environment?

Well part of terraforming is the introduction of non-native life. For example Mars is the most suitable planet for terraforming in the solar system and could be done using modern technology over the course of hundreds of years. Some others require much more effort. This means taking the atmosphere and changing it to a nitrogen/oxygen rich one.
So the wildlife of Caldari Prime was at one point life from Earth most likely or imported from the Gallente after 22517 AD. Now most of the wildlife would have to be small stuff. The ancestors of the Caldari lived in the remains of high tech outpost for at least 200 years before the atmosphere became breathable. So I highly doubt there are any animals like a lions or bears or deer or stags. However there may be things like chickens, pigs, various birds, the things a self sustaining colony might want or acquire over the course of the generation of contact with others.
So native fauna to Caldari, yes lots of it, the stuff you have to seed somewhere like Mars with to get it terraforming and automatic process to introduce new fauna or life at each stage of the process. Native wildlife, I suspect there are rabbits for some reason. Might even be a regular meals for the Caldari. But big animals like whales, lions, tigers, elephants, and others are probably right out unless there was an immediate demand for them.

With sufficiently advanced technology, you don't need the physical presence of livestock. You may storage fertilized eggs and grow them artificially - Caldari have since long access to 'tube child' technology. .
The price demanded for the most precious of all things is life itself - ultimate cost for perfect value. |

true but the question isnt about now its about then it says in the PF that it took 3-400 years AFTER the eve gate collapsed for the terraforming to be complete, therefore most of the settlers high tech skills would have been lost before any cloned/embyroed wildlife and vegatation could have been released/planted
so in the thousands of years before the caldari relearned our technology what did they survive off of?

Well there is the implication that there are seas/oceans on Caldari Prime, Caldari partisan's destroyed a Gallente underwater colony on Caldari. Possibly there was native water life, but little native surface life.
Terraforming could be used to accelerate the development of a planet that was slowly headed in the direction of being able to support life. From my scientific understanding earlier Earth did not have much in the way of land dwelling creatures and the algae, fish, etc have existed for much longer and some of their by products are what created a breathable atmosphere.
There also is the implication that until recently the Caldari had a relatively small population and still have the smallest population aside from the Jove. Prior to contact with the Gallente it is quiet possible that the Caldari barely numbered in the billions (thus making any conflict initially with them a bad idea). If there are limited resources for supporting the population the Caldari might very well naturally restrict their rate of growth.
Once space travel was invented and the resources of star system and the import of 'larger' crops once lost to the Caldari because the ancient database had been destroyed or depleted, it could speed up.

We made biscuits out of dirt, seasoned with each other's hair and nail clippings. It was all we could find to eat.
