Actually, the whole video is relevant to this thread.
One could very well imagine that the effect of discovering a whole New World in 1492 across a vast sea no one had even thought possible to cross before (ok, except Vikings up north - but they kept quiet about it), could have had a similar impact to discovering a new habitable - and inhabited - planet nowadays.
And what we did back then was pure unadulterated slaughter. Killed their leaders, decimated their populations, annihilated their cultures, exploited their resources, stole their gold, r*ped their women and enslaved whatever remained breathing.
It's estimated that more than 25 million indians lived in Mexico in 1518. By 1623 only 700k remained. By comparison, the combined populations of Spain and Portugal was around 10 million at the time.
Some historians argue that a lot of the deaths came from diseases the conquistadores brought over from Europe the natives had not evolved appropriate biological defenses for. But it still does not change the fact that conscious mass butchery was happily committed at industrial levels.
In 1550 a committee was organized by the king of Spain to debate whether these new-found aliens were human or not. One of the most illustrated Spanish intellectuals at the time argued that they were "natural slaves" and "inhuman barbarians" who had no soul. The human-rights precursor cleric Bartolome de las Casas tried to argue otherwise, claiming that "everyone is human". The king ended up deciding that they were human, fair enough, but incapacitated at it, therefore they were to be "encommended" to Spaniards as labor (males) and sex (females) slaves.
Reviewing our previous experiences with meeting alien civilizations, I'm inclined to think that if we ever do find aliens from outer space they better have the technology to disintegrate our asses as soon as we step off our ships, otherwise they are in trouble. Particularly if they harbor shiny metals in vast quantities.

Apparently an encounter with aliens commendatory lead to enslavement of the specie, destruction of worlds or robbery of technologies. Positive or peaceful on-going must be turn into ridicule like "running around in jumpsuits like in startreck".
Seriously guys; whats on our mind?
To me, an alien landing on my backyard will be just as life changing a moment than any random kitten found sleeping on my porch. Im sure the most significant impact on my life will be the constant NEWSFLASH!! spam all around. I will also laugh my A off for all the *tards going ballistic..
Guess what? They are already here on Earth! If that thing I saw that night is a human made machine I gonna eat my keyboard.

Ok, seriously.
Lets say aliens land on Earth AND make their presence and intentions clear .
They are:
1. hostile: they want to annihiliate the human race, use us for experiments, whatever Answer: we're ******. Unlike all the nice movies try to tell you, there is no resisting technology that is thousands or milions years more advanced than yours. Most of humanity will panic, but it won't really matter in the end, will it?
2. neutral: they just want to study us/our civilisation, but they won't share technologies or interfere with our developement. Answer: some panic at the beggining, probably riots. But the situation will calm down eventually, as people accept the fact. It's a big universe after all and if we can ignore it now, we can ignore it after the fact. It would probably speed up the merging of humanity in a single nation as a natural responce to an outside factor.
3. friendly: they come to accept us into the galactic nation and they share technologies and knowledge. Answer: this one is actually tricky. Most technologies would be horded by corporations and the military and it would take years for the little people to see any benefit. Also unless the 'galactica enciclopedia' would be somehow plugged directly into the internet it would come to us heavly censored. I have no illusions that people with power would just get more power as the result. Would our civilisation be changed by this: absolutely, but I believe that the human race is self centered enough to survive it ;) ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

Not being a religious person myself I allways wondered what the reaction of the major religions would be? Most religions rely on the concept that we are "Gods special children", would this bring that notion into disrepute or would the major religions be able to adapt their philosophy in some way?
I say prep for dustoff, nuke the site from orbit...

That is always what I have thought. Of course there will be goverment intervention and I am sure there will be problems but the main threat against the Aliens (if they are not hostile) will be these radical religous types. Because it will throw there whole belief system way off and just like any other religion when there beliefs are challenged or downplayed they fight (in the name of X).
I mean, how can somebody NOT believe in evolution after making contact with a species from another planent, it doesn't even have to be intelligent life. Long ago people worshipped the sun because it was the source of life. Crops grew, you felt safer and it provided warmth. But science of course has disproved this whole theory and I think the same thing is going to happen someday when we make "First Contact".
I don't mean to downplay religion, I think its neccessary for certain types to have a box to work within. Its just not my cup of tea...at all.

Yes they could but (if i am not mistaken) we were created in gods image and favoured above angels with that wonderfull thing called free will. So if we are the favoured ones will that make the alien who contacts us a lesser spiecies ? I think we all know how that will pan out when we regard a speicies with higher tech than us as lesser.

Edited by: LUH 3471 on 02/02/2008 00:40:58 aliens are our brother and sisters who are all lovy dovy starchildren like we are aswell at a young age until we become entangled into the sensual world like insects flying towards the light bulb without thinking growing this ego, which has nothing to do with reality whatsoever and aslong you wont be aware of this selfcreated dillemma you will spin in circles concernign this question about "aliens" aliens only exist for the tiny ego the universal man will see brother and sisters
this is the truth universal and simple loving
now continue having fun spinning in your little self created circles somday you will find the way to the light (consciousness) which illumines all
hint: dont touch the self created "i" - dont be stuck up in any minor concept created by the mind - try to think universal (become aware of your own conditioning) - expand your awareness
hint hint : evolution of consciousness goes from selfsish->selfless->universal - guess at what stage this kindergarden planet is at at the moment and at what stage there will be eventually contact
hint hint hint : it is all about love, truth and simplicity
enjoy folks
ps: truth is not knowable nor thinkable with the mind

I read a book once, "First Contract", by Greg Costikyan.
Basically, Aliens arrive, the UN trades Jupiter (the majority of usable mass in the Solar System) for a (useless) encyclopaedia, the global economy (or at least the industrialised countries) collapses.
It's a really good read as well, quite funny.

I¦ll start with stating that I¦m argentinian, so don¦t take any offense, but... Why dwell with those past events?
It was 500 years ago, and only the descendants of those indians have any right to complain... And even then, why not also denounce the destruction of other civilizations by others 1000, or maybe 5000 years ago? Same thing for everyone...
Sorry if I bug you, in some countries in South America some people are starting to ask for reparations for those times, and it¦s pretty much stupid, ¦cause they just using it as political, and populist, reason... The guys talk stuff like "We were carefree, and we were enslaved and killed, and blahblahblah" while it¦s obvious they quite enjoy the modern world advantages...
Nowadays, dozens of cultures and languages die every few years. And.. is it THAT bad? The world keeps moving, ,and weaker civilizations have to die for other to take their place. As I see it, unfair as it is, it¦s common evolution.

If we find the aliens, then it is a given that we are more technologically advanced. If aliens find us, then we are screwed whatever happens. Well, 1 possible one, a race of herbivores that had 2 habitable planets in their system, and decided to colonize the other, logical conclusion there must be others to started exploring.
Herbivores have a tendency to be eaten by Omnivores humans....

Assuming the aliens find us, simple humanity reacts like it always does to unknowns. We try to blast the crap out of them and get annihilated because some government hotshots wet their pants. Its not as if normal people would be told aliens tried to contact us or anything. Coverups are standard practice, people are afraid of what they don't know. All the normal people would notice was the dropping of all the bombs or whatever it is the aliens use to sterilise worlds to dangerous to allow to live.

You make an excellent point. 2,000 years ago the Celts dominated all of North Western Europe, but then the Romans came and later the Germans. Now the Celts are confined to the edges of Europe (Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia). Being of Irish decent I demand reperations.
