Well, unless you can develop the ability to just shrug your shoulders and laugh it off, all you will end up doing is getting yourself one nice ulcer (not recommended).
Yes, EVE is dark and cold. People will scam you if they can. It's completely legal play in EVE.
So... thicken that skin, and get back out there, you may go places. Otherwise, the scammers won... You don't want that do you?

That's not cruel. What's cruel about that? You didn't read the contract properly and you paid 450M for an 80M ships.
I bet you'll always read contracts properly in future, right?

It's not an exploit, so it's "game legal". Of course, you're equally free to enforce any in-game penalties you feel appropriate.
If it's any comfort, losing 370M or so is pretty small beer by EvE scam standards. Corp thefts measuring in the tens of billions have been publicised. And then of course... This!
I hope you feel better now.

Yup, scamming is legal. So are infiltrating corps and stealing their hangars, tricking people into fights by stealing their ore, suicide-ganking in Empire-space, piracy, war declarations for extortion, scanning mission runners and shooting them or stealing their loot, etc.

Edited by: Vabjekf on 01/02/2008 02:46:27 Hehe, someone in the newbie corp almost fell for this one the other day, would have if they did not have the clarity to ask us first.
The lesson here, people are stupid. Assume everyone you deal with is smarter than you, and know there are probably always plenty of people even more stupid than you are.
Have an idea for a scam? Even if you don't think anyone could ever fall for it... there will be tons of people it gets. Dont be afraid to try something stupid thinking that people wont fall for it, they will.
You could probably get your money back via the exact same scam, using the exact same ship even.
Still, i wonder if you would have been more careful if you had to watch those mills trickle in instead of just selling a GTC and suddenly having it all, may have made you look a bit more carefully.
As always, don't buy something you cant afford to lose. In your case you 'lost' it before you even had it. A regular old raven is a fine mission running ship too you know. And it will make that money back decently quick itself.
You just payed for a lesson. Your scam resistance just went up, your appreciation of isk also shot up i think=P Remember, wealthy people don't get that way just because they know how to make lots of money, they get that way because they also know how to keep it.

How is this even POSSIBLE anymore, unless you use a freeform contract, which you never should? How can you not examine a contract carefully before you accept it? I spend at least a couple of minutes examining and reading every part of a contract before agreeing to it.
I just purchased a Daredevil the other day. There's a pop-up window (for both auctions and exchanges) that says:
Originally by: "Pop-up Window" You are about to accept the following contract: <Item Name>. You will have to pay the following sum of money: <X amount> ISK
You will receive the following items: One (or more) unit of <item(s) you will receive>.
Are you sure you want to do this?
How can you screw that up? Do I need to go looking for scams, to find out how someone could possibly fall for one?
Also, LOL @ someone buying a bunch of ISK, then getting scammed trying to buy a CNR. I laugh at your impatience to become yet another sheep spamming out L4s in CNRs, and am happy to see you suffer for it. ________________

GTCNR, not a joke after all.
There are many many scams possible due to the cluttered interface and sometimes bad UI coding. They mostly get newbies with lots of ISK's (from GTC's), because the veterans have been around a while and have had time to hear about these scams etc.
Read this. It's condescending, but there is some info there on how to avoid some of the scams.

I read that scam guide the first week I started playing, but the current system seems idiot-proof. I read about people falsifying contract descriptions, and all the copy and pasting in freeform contracts (there are none on the market in-game currently, haven't been since I started playing).
So what exact scam did this fellow fall for? A private contract arranged through convo, I guess? A description on an auction that said it was a CNR, when it was really a regular Raven (which you can see bright as day in the acceptance warning window)? ________________

I disagree.
I think activities designed to prey on stupid, ignorant and / or careless people are fantastic. Either the victims learn from their mistakes and adapt, or they fail to learn, and quit the game in frustration. ________________

OP please don't buy another GTC.
Another GTC at this point would be what they call "Throwing good money after bad".
You'll just lose it in some equally humiliating way.
The scam you just described requires not any huge quantity of ingame trickery but merely that the scam-ee doesn't read particularly carefully (hint: the contracts say in big bold letters what you are getting) and trusts everyone they meet. In short, you have to be pretty dumb to fall for a scam like that.
The best you can do at this point is to grind out some L3's to fit your Raven.
Also for the love of god start actually reading windows in the game interface before clicking yes. EVE RELATED CONTENT |
