Edited by: Malicious Toaster on 01/02/2008 17:18:01 I was reading some topics the other day, and saw people talking about having average/mediocre DPS rates of 500-600, with 900 being top quality. Is anything even close to that range even achievable with missiles?
I tried running the numbers, including multiplicative boni from skills, rigs, skill hardwire implants, and ships. Best I could get was 508 DPS on a drake using Cruise, and 464 on a Raven using cruise. That was using the best possible setup - all level 5 missile skills, T2 rigs, best HW skill implant, level 5 ship skills, and the best faction ammo (Dread Gurista). Am I missing something, or are missiles terrible?
Note that I was also ignoring factors like Explosion Velocity/Size/Resists, as I was going for calculations in an ideal setting.

You neglected the fact that all high DPS gunships have very short range.
Raven with 6x Siege II (CN torps) + 3x BCS II + 5x Hammerhead II = 1030 dps. Range: 27 km. All level 5, no implants. This number is for comparison with other missile ships only.
Turrets tend to hit a lot better when tracking is favorable, and this is where positioning and EW come in.

Think your numbers are a little off and you forgot about torpedos. According to EFT a max skilled raven pilot with 3x BCU IIs and with no implants or rigs will do 540dps with cruise and 990dps with torpedos using Dread Guristas ammo. ------------

Since you're ignoring explosion velocity and signature radius, have you tried the calculations for a Phoenix in siege mode with Rift torpedos?

That and you cannot fit cruise on a Drake.

You can, you just can't fit very many.

I didn't even try the calculations with torps, as I kept hearing, "Torps are terrible, use cruise, etc" on the forums - my mistake for assuming they meant at all ranges, then. I guess a mix of cruise/torps would probably be optimal most of the time, switching out to cruise for fleet combat and torps for a gankmobile?
And yeap, forgot drones. Haven't really used them much yet =p

BCUs are damage and rate of fire boosters for missiles. It's Ballistic Control Unit abbreviated. Each turret type has it's equivalent.
Mixing short range and long range weapons is sub-optimal. As a rule you want to focus on a particular style of fighting and optimize for it. With the range factor you want to have all your weapons effective at the same time to get the most out of them. *** Si non adjuvas, noces (If you're not helping, you're hurting)

Cruise longer range, lower damage. Torps are shorter range, high damage. Their main downside is the slow speed and huge explosion radius (gonna lose a lot of damage on anything smaller than a BS).
Quote: One more edit: Is EFT some sort of calculation website? I've been doing it all by hand thus far, and it's been getting a little annoying - sometimes the item database is unclear or misleading in the way it lists item statistics, and I have to log in, check the item, and log back out after I write it down.

Edited by: Big Z213 on 01/02/2008 20:50:56 just remember DPS aint everything. People bang on about DPS but fail to take into account that it is VERY unlikely you will ever actually hit someone with that much damage. It's useless having weapons that do 1000s of DPS when simulated in a fitting app but when you get into that ship and encounter someone, and cannot hit them, then all the DPS in the world will not save you. Best rule of thumb is, get in a ship, fight someone, if you die then you need more DPS lol
Also, you must take into account the other players' skills - as this will effect their resistances
