Hi,
Well, after 4 days of trial account I must say: great game! Entertaining, challenging and enough depth to keep me busy for a while.
But after 4 days I can also say: I will never pay for a game that lags in this ENORMOUS way!

Quite unbelievable: I have not been able to get into my character for 2 hours now: stuck inbetween 'Perimeter' and 'Jita' jump ...

Well, it's a known issue that Jita, a trade hub, is lagged out during peak hours and even during low players time.
That's why I just never go near or in Jita. Of course, that doesn't excuse the lag itself, or the lack of fixing by CCP itself. It's just that sometimes, you need to find a way around the game to fully enjoy it..
And it you really need to sell some items, I would go to Rens or Hek or any smaller trade hub.

You'll soon learn that Jita isn't the place to be, especially on the weekend. The lag is horrendous and there's not much can be done as it's easily the most popular system in game (for the life of me I don't know why - there can't be that many traders who just sit in Jita can there?)
Go to just about any other system and you'll have a far better experience.
If you do get stuck, you can use this website (My Account page) to file a stuck petition and the GMs will move you quickly out of Jita.
Cheers Falka

I've been playing EVE for almost two years without any lag. But I've never felt the need to enter Jita at peak hours or join fleet fights with node-breaking numbers...

After four days, I must also admit that the fan/forum base is a friendly bunch of people. Thanks for all your replies - I'll just 'sing out' the lag for now and try to avoid the region altoghether.

I can't seem to find this on the account page. I'm still stuck in-game, and for some reason I can't use the 'open petition' in the game itself (results in black screen)!

If the above doesn't work for you, you can log into eve, and press ESC on the char selection screen. There should be an open petition button already there with the ability to select which character you are petitioning from.
Though I highly recommend you only opening one petition and wait a while. Opening two petitions for the same thing will only lengthen the queue, and get you moved twice when you don't want too _

Unfortunately, that's Jita. Did you start your character as Caldari? If I were you, since it's been only 4 days, create a new character as Amarr or Minmatar. Their space is pretty well lag-free, even in the big market hubs.
Unfortunately, Jita is a player-made problem, because everybody goes there to trade. If CCP improved the server, reducing lag, even more players would go!
So just don't go to Jita.

Edited by: Melme Rahka on 04/02/2008 07:48:50 IIRC Jita already has it's own improved server, which reduced lag but because of that more people went there. So, back to start.

And yes, you did get sucked into the limbo vortex that hovers around the Jita gates. If you have to wait for more than 30 minutes getting trough the gate, or if you disconnect while getting trough, you are stuck and only a stuck petition will get you unstuck again.
Check the map next time you need to go to Jita, filtering it on "People in system". If it shows more than, say, 800, avoid it like the plague. A server box can handle about 500 people before it starts to slow down, and after 700 or so it gets highly unreliable.

Sunday Jita at primetime is called the Black Hole of Lag for a very good reason. Never go to Jita if you can at all avoid it. ----- Character back under original management. |

Trade in Amarr, rens, dodixie and oursulaert, just leave the overcrowded caldari space...
Do not run missions in motsu or dodixie (maybe just bad on weekends for dodixie)... Do not pass through jita, use the map to find a route around. (if possible, there is a constellation with no route araound!)
Now, you should notice that there are thousands of star systems and 3 that may cause trouble -> enjoy all the other systems! -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Jita usually has 350-850 players in system, average around 500ish. That's the size of two fleets that you have there constantly warping around, docking and undocking, fitting ships, buying stuff, updating orders, and a few n00bs who run missions in system. Approximately from 18:00 to 22:00 EVE time lag get there so bad due to peak hours that many a time you will have to resort to writing petitions through the website. If you ever have to go there try to go during off peak hours. There are also routes around Jita that would get you to Lonetrek and Citadel regions.

A friendly game master helped me out of the 'vortex' within minutes after posting a petition. Thanks for the tips on how to do this.
I will have to learn to adapt to this Jita problem - I suppose it will get better once I have some more cash and thus can also buy ships/upgrades a bit more expensive outside Jita.
See you ingame!

Here's a free tip if you like to take advantage of the Jita trade hub as a trader: Learn the remote trading skills (Marketing and Procurement IIRC) to level 1 (enough to trade from 5 jumps or less away) and do your trade stuff while safely docked inside a station in one of it's much less crowded neighbour systems like Perimeter. When you actually have to pick stuff up or drop it off, wait until the population dips to a low and then do your hauling in one go. Never ever quit the game while you are anywhere in Jita! While remote trading is a bit clumsy and you will still experience lag in getting your orders processed, this will at the worst prevent an order from taking place and maybe kick you out of the game due to your connection dying. You should be able to log in without getting stuck in Limbo. And you can log out and in in Perimeter without any risk at all, at least until so many people choose to trade there that it becomes the new Caldari trade hub .

I don't think the problem is exclusive to Jita. In the past 5 days I have fallen asleep while missioning 3 times (and lost my ship all 3 times), I have been booted a countless number of times, and I have been stuck in traffic control 4 times. I'm sorry, but this seems excessive.
I know CCP don't want to go the WOW route and break the world into self-contained realms, but a few more servers might not be a bad idea!

well the first one really has nothing to do with lag get some sleep dude
I also have been booted countless numbers of times.... unfortunately (for me fortunate for ccp) thats a problem on my end and not ccps fault at all
traffic control i thought they removed this? or have i just not gone by any busy systems lately?
and sharding would be very very weird at this point in the game.

I haven't had much lag problems, but the system i'm usually in there's about 50 players or so, I recommend looking at how many players are in your system.
