Edited by: Xinth on 28/03/2004 17:51:07 Do I understand this right? Not taking skills/ammo into consideration, if weapon is rated to have Optimal Range of 20k and Accuracy Falloff of 30k, does it mean that its effective range is between 20k and 30k? Or 20k and 50k? What about below 20k?

It can hit between 0-50km, and also at any range with wrecking shots, which is probably a bug or something (not a very serious one though). The best range is 0-20km. The range I'd say it "works" at (decent hit/miss ratio) is about 30k (0.3*falloff + optimal).
There's one more thing though, tracking speed. Most guns will hit for crap at very short range, especially battleship size weapons. Tracking speed is the only thing that gives you "minimum range", unless both you and your target is completely still.

it will hit from 0-50k, but your best hits will be at 20k. the damage goes down as it approaches 50k, to the point that at 50k its almost as good to roll down your window and throw curses at the target. past 50k, even at 51k, you will hit only a very very small percentage of the time. 1-5% mebbe.
inside falloff ( the range between 0 and 20k) seems to be less affected by range. i.e. you hit nearly as good at 0k as you do at 20k, IF tracking speed was not being considered.
theres a post by one of the devs about how fallof works, including a graph. ill try to find it an post it for you

I have been told on the help channel (by polaris, so i trust it) that falloff is add or subtracted from opt... let me get a better example.
Opt range of 20km, falloff of 10km.
You will hit best at 20km, and the further from 20km (closer and fruther away) the worse shots will get. so at 10km (20km-10km) and 30km(20km+10km) you hits will be pretty bad.
tracking will effect hits, but is seperate from opt/falloff (transversal velocity and all that)
Side note, for some reason the odds of wreaking shots are the same at ALL ranges... so you could sit at 400km (if you were able to lock at that distance) with as many neutron blasters as you wanted and deal rare but huge hits (large blasters could in effect gank a frig from 400km, but the whole idea doesn't seem practical if you are trying to destroy something that can be hit many times like a BS).
I belive that is every thing. hope it helped.
