Im frankly hurt that people suggest setting the Church to red. Im not even -2 sec... We simply help people to see the blinding light and to repent their sins...
More generally- once you get behind the border systems there are stacks of low sec systems with very low traffic you can spend time in. Use the map to check traffic and, if you have more than one character (not "toons" please!) set up a noob alt scout in an entry system- use him to scan the gate before you jump in and check for camps.
A well fitted frig (ideally a ceptor) should pretty much never be caught by a low sec camp. Just click warp whilst still cloaked. It will take a very very fast locker indeed to catch you. Anything bigger (and I include AFs in this) is of course a risk... Hence the noob alt scout.

OP:
Just hop in a frig or shuttle and see for yourself (leave implant clone in hisec just in case ).
You'll find a great deal of exaggeration regarding the danger. A little bit of common sense with regard to entrance system and attentiveness to your scanner while flying around will keep you sorted.

But sounds like you need 400bajillion SP's, Billions of ISK, Titans, BattleShips, super tech and trillion ISK Implants to survive even jumping through a 0.4 or lower gate, I tried to look at a 0.4 system recently on one of my characters and was blown to a million bits as soon as i tried to leave the gate, was just a cheap frigate though, but it had Veldespar in it :)
Given that 0.4 to 0.1 is heavy duty PVP/Ganking land, what does one do if they want to try to run the more profitable missions / minning that's to be had?
Do I need to get a maxed out Tech 2 Battleship to try and blast my way through the gate campers that seem to spend all their time at these gates? Do you need to form a huge corp and all go through at once?
Doesn't gate camping get a bit booring?
How do us 'newbies' ever make the move from 0.5 to 0.4 through 0.1... It is looking like it might be very hard.
Sorry to sound like a whinger, i'm not really whinging, just trying to work out how to best fit in, I guess i'm wanting to know what the 'benchmark' is for skills/ship/fitting you should have under your belt before heading to one of those scary 0.4 jump gates?
One day, my little toon's going to and blow up those nasty gate campers! Might take a cpl of years though....
Anyway, any info appreciated.
one thing that is definitely worth pointing out is that you tend to get more pvp action in 0.4 than u do in 0.3 (mainly because i dont think u get omber in 0.3 sectors)
----------edit--------- actualy id also add dont be too scared of low sec its not as scarey as ppl make out, if u want a fright go through 0.0 =)

While you can get around in low sec with a frigate, avoiding the gate camps, you really can't do anything in low sec in a frig that you can't do in high sec with a bigger ship.

Nooo the frigs to get your bearing in low sec and get a feel for how things are and how dangerous it actually is. The fact is low sec aint that dangerous. Find somewhere real quiet and just keep your scanner open doing a few scans once and a while. Theres even low sec mission hubs which do ok.

serious lulz... Like everything else, MWD is your friend. Once you jump into low sec, assess your gate grid and look at your ship orientation while you are cloaked, if you happen to be nearly aligned then that should be your target warp to celestial, if its a moon, scan for tower.
At this point, there really isnt anything you can do in lo-sec by yourself execept change your shorts frequently, if thats your thing. Practice with cheap ships, interact and engage equal size stuff, look at WCS's as well. Stay away from Hictors, and have some isk savings, you should be fine, check the map. 0.0 choke lo sec sys's are piwat havens so watch those. Main thing is getting a feeling of how to pilot the ship when you are getting shot at... takes time

After playing for a month, I ventured to nullsec this weekend and of course got camped/podded and all that. No biggie, I used a frigate I won in a mission fitted with looted equipment. The next day I realized I'm not safer in highsec either. I'm member of a corp/alliance that happens to be at war with Privateers and they got my cruiser. All it took was 5 seconds distracted watching a Super Bowl play while jumping through a gate.
They podded me on 0.9 space, I guess you can get "safely podded" in highsec if at war (didn't know). We should start a corp with the sole purpose of hunting down privateers out of Empire. They declare war on your alliance just to have the right to pod n00bs in highsec

Everyone knows privateers dock as soon as any real, fair fight comes up.
OP: don't bother. Ypu can make far more isk with a lot more safety mining or running mission in highsec. Lowsec does not contain any ores worth mining over veld/scord/plag, and in missions all it amounts to is an extra 1mil ot so for a hard l4 mission, for which you need multiple hundred million isk worth of ship and fitting, and you will regularly lose to gatecamps if you take it to lowsec. Lowsec is only there as a dangerous point between highsec and 0.0, which are both safer (assuming non hostile 0.0, hostile 0.0 is worse) and more profitable

D'OH!, didn't know that either.
Well, just do it same way they do. Have scouting alts, send a well tanked bait with some cloaked tacklers and have the BC/BS docked, waiting a couple systems away :-p
After a few weeks of waking up in a new clone every hour they will go elsewhere ;-)
Back on topic: I would encourage every first day n00b to just grab your rookie ship after a couple missions (so you know how to fly it) and just head to closest 0.0 system. Getting podded is not such a big deal, you will wake up back at your base with a freshly baked rookie ship waiting for you. They make it such a big scaring deal in the rookie channel and it is not.

Isnt it the case that after jumping you are not aligned to anything and it will take an equal time to align and warp to an object you are facing or an object that it behind you.

Cloaking devices. ISK farmers have given them a bad name, but only because they work so well. Minimal penalty for use (kills your scan resolution), which doesn't impact PvE all that much. Even when you jump into a gatecamp, they can save your bacon. If you find yourself in a camp on entry, start moving and the moment your speed rises above zero, engage the cloak, don't wait for the transit cloak to completely drop, and you'll be back under cover before all but the absolutely fastest lock ons and the odds are you won't be visible enough for anyone to eyeball your location. Its a pain in the ass slowboating out of the camps, but its a question of time spent saving the ship or money spent replacing it. To pervert the GEICO tagline, 15 minutes could save you millions or more in ship insurance.
Another devious little move is to come at the gate from a not too obvious approach. Rather than going from gate to gate when a camp is suspected, stop for a few under cloak and look at the solar system map. Figure out a planet you can warp to and alter your inbound trajectory off the direct path. Twice that stunt saved me when the campers used a small bubble on a gate camp. The position of the bubble was set for the direct approach, and when it pulled me out of warp, I was behind it, rather than beyond it, and managed to make the gate before my tank broke. Plus it throws their tacklers off when an inbound comes through from somewhere unexpected. Having shot up a lot of easy targets can make campers lazy, use that to your advantage.

You go to low sec when you are flying a cheap ship you can afford to lose or when you are part of an organized gang.
Quote: Given that 0.4 to 0.1 is heavy duty PVP/Ganking land, what does one do if they want to try to run the more profitable missions / minning that's to be had?
Ahhh, but that's the thing. While low sec missions are inherently more profitable than hi sec missions, they are vastly less so when you factor in the pirate menace.
Low sec mining, besides being horrendously dangerous, pays very poorly ever since the drone regions plummeted mineral prices.
If you want activity that is more profitable than hi sec mission running, go join a 0.0 corporation and do 0.0 ratting or 0.0 mission running.

The best answer is to not go to low sec (<0.5) until you have played for at least two years. Any other time you are just a lamb being led to slaughter.
Sure you might get away with it a time or two, but as you can see from all the other posters, they want you to go since the smarter players dont go and they need targets or it gets boring.

Dammit! And I thought a few months and a brain were enough Maybe I should stop killing people and only fly industrials the next 6 months until I reach the 2 years mark...

Same here. Of course, things have changed a lot. Low sec is both far more dangerous and far less rewarding (at least in terms of mining).

I'm gonna sit here and laugh a bit, because as bad as I suck at PvP because I was bound and determined to follow the group I joined EVE with in Caldariland, I've been in 0.0 from about six months on, and, damned if I don't thing I waited WAY too long, comparing the success I've had out there, despite all the challenges I've faced.

Also, it's worth pointing out that not all low sec is equally dangerous. Low sec systems adjacent to caldari empire space are more or less perma camped.
Backwater low sec in Amarr space can be pretty uneventful.

When I was new I ratted in a nice big lowsec system. I didnt know the next system over was the HQ of one of the local pirate corps. Till I got chased by them, an joined.
Joining the local pirate crew is an exellent way of making your life easier in lowsec. You're a constant source of bait for your friends, and more importantly you have friends near by who can help you. Fit a 20k scram on whatever you're ratting in if you can spare it, if someone jumps you tackle them, stay at range and call in your friends. You've just increased your isk/hour ratting, by being in on whatever thought you were prey.
Anyway, some more on point suggestions: Learn the scanner, if they can see you, then you can see them. It will save your life.
Set your autopilot to "less secure" and see where the starlanes go from where you are. Are any of the systems near you easy bottlenecks? Are any of them hubs of lowsec trade(bad)? How about gate hubs(good, thats an escape route)?
A system with 2 stations is better than a system with 1.
On the frigate level the PVP fit can often rat just fine. Maximize your chances of surviving being jumped. No loot is sweeter than what you get off the wreck of your attacker.
A ceptor can be a great investment for someone who lives in lowsec. The train time is very low, about a month and the prereqs are valuable anyway. You wont find a ratting ship that has an equal chance of getting away. And if you choose to PVP a tackler is always welcome. Also, not much else gets through gate camps quite as well. One of the most secure ways to get that random faction drop or pile of rig parts back to highsec for sale.

Thanks for all these helpful replies :)
I've decided that i'll remain in high sec for now, sounds like there's a BIG learning curve, but heaps of handy tips, definitely will pay more attention to the overview (didn't know you could customise it).
Lost another frigate, another poor ALT got podded.
The stealth thing sounds interesting though...A mate of mine has a stealthy thing, I'll go ask him about it, maybe that could sneak through the nasty gate campers? |

If you're in an agility-rigged covops ship, you'd be very unlucky to get caught in lo-sec. It's not impossible, but you'd have to pretty much jump in right on top of someone who was in a fast-locking ship.

Don't, get into low sec every now and then, take a cheap frigate or rookie ship and just go fly around. Get blown up a few times while the cost is minimal, it helps reduce the adrenaline rush that makes your heart pump, makes your hands shake and causes your brain to make stupid decisions.

That's all well and good until you warp to zero on a gate that has a smart bombing batteship (AKA Disco Ship) sitting in your warp in path.

Just go cruising in a frig and a jump clone, that makes the risk negligible.
Cheapest way to learn something it to just go start doing it, it's always harder to learn by studying and you never get the full picture like that anyway.
Be careful who you talk to, but do talk to people, there are lots of friendly and helpful people out there.

Edited by: Vymorna Grom on 05/02/2008 04:56:08 Could someone - possibly one of you seasoned pirates - make a list of the differences between low-sec (0.4, 0.3, etc.) and null-sec (0.0.)
You're all saying null-sec is a more profitable place. How so? I assume it's also accordingly more dangerous . . .
Thanks.

The rats give better bounties, salvage and loot (sometimes very expensive loot), the ore is better, the ice is better, the exploration sites are better, and the missions are better.
And it's usually considered LESS dangerous than nullsec, though that depends on who you are and where you are. Some areas of nullsec are much, much safer than most places in lowsec.

It depends on how safe you want to be. You can "scout" with an alt or a friend and try to avoid getting caught in camps. You cannot blast through them alone, peroid. You can "RUN" through them sometimes if you are in a Nano ship with hardcore nav skills.
If you want to be 100% safe and do whatever you want then yes, get a big huge Corp that knows how to fight really well and equip everyone top notch and fly through the gates and just whipe out the Pirats and take everything they own. Do that enough and they will probably decide a different gate is calling to them. Most will try to run away though (they do not want a fight) so make sure to bring good tacklers and try to bait them into opening fire first.
Does camping get boring? Oh yes, but nothing is better for these folks than the joy of knowing they have made someone else's life misrable (If they manage it that day) so the boredom pays off. Besides, you do not have to pay attention 100% of the time at a camp, just when you hear the gate go off or something target you or shots. +++++++++++++++ I saw the Sign...!
