When will CCP revisit how much insurance you can get for various ships? I don't know all of the examples, but here's a few.. (yes, I only fly caldari atm)
RAVEN ===== Price: 91 mil give or take Platinum Insurance: 105 mil payout (i think)
CERBERUS ======== Price: 83 mil Platinum insurance: 18 mil payout (again, not in eve atm)
CROW ==== Price: 18 mil Platinum insurance: what, like 4 mil?
This makes no sense..

Insurance is calculated on mineral costs. T2 is therefore a much lower payout than market price. I do however think insurance needs a bit of a nerf

You can preview the insurance on t1 ships via the item db on the site, the base price will be the payout and the platinum value will be about a third of that payout. CCP have said they'd like to see more t2 ships in combat but invention and the like seem to be their preferred strategy rather than enhancing insurance payouts. I doubt we'll see any radical changes to insurance. ___ Eve Players are not very smart. Support Killmail Overhaul

Insurance should be based on risk. i.e The more danger you put your ships in the lower your payment, perhaps based on the sec rating of the system your in. Killed in a system with a sec rating of 1.0 = 100% payout of current market value,(of ship and fittings) 0.9 = 90% etc....right down until you get to 0.0 and get paid nothing. Which would make life in lo sec a little more interesting.
OR
People can get insurance based on their own sec rating no positive sec rating no insurance......

If you think that is off, try insuring a CNR. CNR average contract price is 450mil isk but the Platinum insurance only covers it the same amount as a regular Raven.

I think when evaluating the insurance the most important thing to consider is not wether its particularly realistic, but wether it serves a purpose and what this purpose is.
I think it serves to lower the barrier of entry for pvp for those who do not have a strong financial base. As such it means a lot more ships exploding, which quite a few people consider good fun.
As for t1 vs t2, I again see it as a good thing. Less skilled or less rich people can afford to pvp in t1 ships, while those with more isk get the extra bling in form of t2 ships. This also has the side effect of making t1 ships more common, as feels (to me) proper. If you'd remove the insurance, there would be less reason to fly t1 since they'd be closer to t2 in cost and otoh t2 ships would lose some of their value as sort of a status symbol. I suppose quite a few people would also 'downsize' to cruisers or even frigates due to financial reasons.
The only thing I could consider changing about the insurance system would be insurances paid for suicide ganks and selfdestructing, but then those are only because I see paying insurance for those doesn't serve an useful purpose.

mah.. i never insure my ships cause it's pointless imo unless you're a noob and you know you're going to die a lot due to many many unknown factors. I may live in 0.0, but i only die when our fc makes a bad decision... :) I just thought I'd try to make a point. Time to fly off in another uninsured cerb!
