Everyone's used to seeing threads and blogs from Tuxford with changes and nerfs, enough to the point that simply seeing his name strikes fear into the most hard core EVE player.
Tuxford is taking a break from swinging the nerf bat this time around and actually talking about a buff. No, it's not a change to ships or modules, but the UI this time and more specifically Overview and EWAR filtering. So the changes are related to PvP after all.
If you want to see what the changes are and a couple pictures while you're at it, read WHO'S JAMMING ME!!!. Then get ready to make a couple Overview setting changes.

Originally by: dsfasdavbadfe Will it be possible to remove drone brackets, and will this have any affect on grid load times or will it still be waiting to download all of the information (including brackets you aren't interested in) from the server before rendering anything on the grid?
Well the client still needs information about various stuff as for the stuff that manages brackets then its not getting any updates on stuff its not interested in. There were really two ways to do this, this way where we just throw the brackets we're not interested in or keep everything and just hide the ones we're not interested in. There are pros and cons with both ways.
Biggest benefit of not keeping any information about brackets we're not interested in can actually boost fps (up to over 20% in cases where there are lots of items in your vicinity and you're zoomed out a bit so you have lighter version of the models. Biggest drawback however is that when you load all the brackets back you get a little lag spike that can vary from part of a second up to 2-3 depending on number brackets that need to be added and hardware.
Of course since it can take a while to add the brackets we can't have <alt> showing all brackets like before so we changed it so that <alt>-z toggles [show all brackets]. You however can bind it to what combination you think is fitting. _______________ |

Please DO make everything exportable or store setting server side. It's really annoying if you have a corrupt personal eve folder and you need to reconfigure your overview.
Yeah this is something we want to do (actually with more than just overview settings). _______________ |

Originally by: XLord i realy like the tab thing and being able to see the ewar thingy. and the option of filtering out all the bloody wrecks (not only on overview but also on screen) sounds realy great.
but i wouldnt put ships on there:S, i just smell the bugs coming. 1 error and no ship will show up on your screen but they are there and firing on you. (just like the little bug of some ships no showing up on overview after some small "bugfix")
Sometimes bugs are created and we don't notice them. Yeah I know it sounds unbelievable but sometimes **** happens and things break down but we shouldn't let worst case scenario speculation about what could happen stand in the way of progress. You know of that risk, QA knows of that risk and I know of that risk. That should be sufficient to thwart that bug if it really comes up. _______________ |

Originally by: Tintifish My only worry is that some of us with less screen space than others (ie me) are running out of space to the point the overview covers half the screen, the chat channels the 1/3 opposite, and the UI and targets a slice off the top and bottom. With the new changes its getting a little ridiculous(see screeny:http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3776/20080207161027ds6.jpg)
On that note, we need a way to break targets onto multiple lines.
Well thats why you have the tabs. Try breaking up the information that is displayed. _______________ |

Ok little comment about the ctrl to freeze overview. This is one of those ideas which when you hear it you go "oh man why didn't I think of that". Well we did but it came kind of late so it won't come with these UI changes but we have the lead gamedesigner pushing for this and it isn't complex to do. _______________ |

I was gonna tell you that there is no excess information is being transferred between server and client but that's not strictly speaking true. It is however very minimal. _______________ |

Originally by: Eraggan Sadarr ...although getting the EWAR icons to work in overview on sisi would be nice too.....how?
They should be default on by now but if for some reason they are not then you go into overview settings -> appearance tab -> EWAR subtab.
There is a bug where tracking disrupting, warp scrambling and webifying was not showing up and spamming your errors with logs (ironically the error report machine was broken ). It's been fixed internally and the fix should be on sisi soon if it's not there already. _______________ |

I'm gonna reply to you in this thread if you don't mind. Well actually by the time you read this I already have so basically I'm gonna reply to your other thread in here regardless of what you feel about it.

Would it be possible allow the user to assign a saved overview/bracket to the default overview tab and have it persist through all session changes? Right now there is a work around to do this but it is rather kludgey and will likely catch some people off guard.
Steps 1 Make a new tab 2 Create overview/bracket settings as desired using new tab, save them 3 Open overview settings and apply user created view/brackets to new tab, apply. 4 Set user created setting to default tab via overview chevron right click 5 Dock 6 Log off and log back in. 7 Undock - Default is now something other than "standard" though still "not saved"
Now for the fun part, create yet another overview/bracket combo (I'm going to call this a "view" for brevity) and save those.
Apply this new view setting to default tab via the right click chevron, make it something obvious, like adding all planets and your "kludge saved" not having planets. Now dock and undock with out logging off - poof, back to the kludge save.
Prior to the current implementation, if I docked with view A, I would undock with view A. Now it jumps around on two different conditions, docking, and what setting was applied when I logged. This has the potential to create a behavior matrix that will give the impression of inconsistent behavior, not something usually associated with the word "default."
Maybe I am missing something?
When you change your overview settings you start using a new overview schema called "Not saved" so you don't overwrite your other settings accidentally with some unwanted stuff. This not saved schema isn't persisted unless you save it and then it's not really persisted as you have a new schema with new name. The fact that it's not persisted over jumps more of a bug though.
Now personally if I've got a overview schema called for example "low-sec pirating" and I want to remove lets say stargates of it then I would much rather have the schema change and update instead of having to save it again but thats just me. Would be interested in knowing other players view on that though. _______________ |
