I have an alt whom I am training up in salvaging and I was wondering about which modules and/or which ship to take?
My alt is Minmatar and I can fly Minmatar cruisers, though at the moment my alt currently has a Trasher.
Thanks in advance.

If you want to do it on the cheap a Destroyer with 8 High Slots for beams and tractors is the only way to go.
With three type two cargo extenders I have 750 m3 of space in my Catalysts Hold. More than enough for level three mission running. Level 4 salvaging you might have to make two or three trips.
If ISK is not an issue look into the Maruaders. They have a role bonus for salvaging. Double the range and speed for Tractor beams I think.

As minmatar, your salvaging lineup will probably follow this path
Thrasher Hurricane Typhoon (optional) Vargur (only if you are really enthusiastic about the training)
Setups for them vary depending upon if you are planning on taking them into the battle with you or not. The thrasher will most likely not survive, so it is a ship you send in afterwards to clean up while you're main goes on to the next mission. The hurricane you could put an ok passive shield hp tank - enough for it to gtfo if you're aggroed. Typhoon you can setup with some shield stuff, and maybe some tank in the low with your cargo expanders, and set drones to guard your mission runner (5 heavy drone goodness :P) The vargur should be self explanitory.
To tell the truth though, you would probably do better to train him up to fight with you if you plan on training him up for more than a week or two. A mission will always be run faster with two damage dealers than a damage dealer and a salvager.

Edited by: stormwell on 07/02/2008 18:12:10 My alt is trained up in combat with a combat fitted Trasher, hell I've taken on Rat cruisers in 0.4 and won!
I believe current fittings are 7 artillery cannons and a missile launcher, that is off the top of my head. I very rarely get to bring all my guns to bear against a frigate, so dropping a couple I should be fine. I have a salvager I, just wondering what else to fit.
Oh and at the moment my alt only has access to lvl 1 missions, even though I've done a lot more than I can count.

Edited by: Malevore Sywivin on 07/02/2008 18:36:13 Well not a cruiser, I use the Probe frigate with great success.
[high] 2x salvager I [med] 1x AB II, 1x Cap recharger I [low] 2x Expanded cargohold II [rigs] 1x Salvage tackle
650m3 cargohold and approx 732m/s with the AB on
It never runs low on cap, I use it with lvl4 missions, looting and salvaging, I usually do it in 2-3 warps. No need for beams as the ship runs really fast.
You could for the hell of it fit two cargo optimizer rigs for the extra cargospace.
Hope it helps.

After doing some salvage runs, just a couple of thoughts.
1. Combat fitted ship is a must!
Rats I am going to have to be able to defend against (and fellow players) if I go salvage in belts and/or lowsec. Rats are easy enough to deal with, I can turn them into wrecks for more loot and salvage!
Fellow players are another matter, looks like I'll have to invest in some pvp skills.
2. I've done fairly well with just one Salvager I, do I really need another one and a tractor beam?

Well if you're really only interested in combat with a side of salvaging, then no you don't need more than just the salvager. Salvage the juicy wrecks and leave the rest behind.
If you're serious about salvaging, such as cleaning up after missions, then you have a vastly different setup to worry about. My thrasher currently has:
4x tractor , 4x salvager afterburner, 2x cap recharger 2x cargohold II
I'd use an MWD but the thing just doesn't have the cap to lose (damn that low CPU, can't fit a cap battery!). Probably would be able to afford the sacrifice with rigs, though.

I must be the freak here since I use an Exequror for salvaging. Not quite as fast as the cat, but I like not having to go back as often, especially for level 4's. At some point I'll have to cave in to peer pressure and use a cat. :)
Exequror Salvager: 2 Small Tractor Beams 2 Salvagers 1 10MN AB A couple shield mods to fill the mids out 3 Expanded Cargo II's

A more efficient thing to do would be to use the destroyer, for starters, and everytime the hold gets full, jettison everything and bookmark the resulting can. After salvaging, sweep through with a hauler fitted 100% for agility (istabs/nanos) and it should really only take a few minutes to get it all. Wrecks last for two hours so you can do this every 60-90 minutes to save time as well. You might even consider warp speed rigs on the hauler, like I've been wanting to put on my Mammoth.
Maybe it's just me, but I like the feeling of dragging home a hauler full of several missions worth of loots.

Edited by: ProjectSeven on 09/02/2008 00:55:01 if its for missions, i never have a L4 that takes me farther then 2 jumps. most are same system.
That in mind i use a thrasher ment for speed and just jetcan loot. Im at work so i cant tell the exact M3 but its 340m3 i think. pull everything to you. loot, salvage, move to next area with a lot within 20km. when cargo gets full jettison and fill that can. Pull it with you to the next group with a tractorbeam.
When your done bookmark the can (or cans if its multiple accel gates) and swap for your hauler while turning in the mission. then you can warp the hauler right on the cans. For the hauler I still use a hoarder with nano's/OD2's and an afterburner. It has like 3.4km3 which is more then any mission i have looted and salvaged. pick up, go home.
4x salvagers 4x tractor beams 1mn ab (forget what else in med) 1x nano2
Edit - Cap rechargers in med slots. it goes thru the little destroyer's cap fast

Third Tackle is ready but not build in till now. 1567 m3 cargo, 759 m/s with my skills for 1 m 24 sec with my skills to cross largh killing filds. Make bookmarks at every stage, talkt to your agent first, then start looting with the bookmarks. this way you can use the MWD in missions.
If you don't like the Salvage Tackle use Cargoholds. 2383 m3 cargo is enough for even the biggest L4 missions. And your MWD-speed will rise to 897 m/s.
