Originally by: Rialtor It's not like the article has no point at all. I don't know that the blame should be placed on video games alone. But the trend in entertainment is in fact leading to a sedentary lifestyle.
Watching TV, surfing the net, and playing games are probably the largest sources of entertainment today.
The power went out the other day on our block, and my roomates and I barely knew what to do with ourselves, being that we were too stubborn to let a blackout make us leave our home :). That's how sad we've become due to the forms of entertainment we've become accustomed to ;).
Only time I've had that issue is if theres a power outage and crappy weather outside. The last power outage was pretty nice though as my neighbors and I decided to have a little block party in the middle of the road and even after the power came back we stayed out until way late that night. Was very refreshing. But overall yes, children are becoming mindless drones, which doesn't help when most parents today are also mindless drones. Unsuitable signature removed. Navgator

Yes you did, but you were unwilling or unable to present what FNC's competitors were doing at the same time to put it into context.
If you go back and reread this thread, and apparently you have not, you will see other posts that I directed mine to - that posted after you.

There may actually be a point to this story.
Hear me out:
Since humans have eliminated most or all of the predators in the US and western Europe there is nothing out there to keep the prey populations in check. Western Europe has solved this problem by wiping out most of the prey also. But in the US there are real dangers of overpopulation for prey species, especially deer. Without some natural way to keep these populations in check, they'll either migrate into everyone's back yards and eat their roses, or die of starvation. Thus the only way to solve the problem is through hunting.
Unfortunately, Bambi has made deer verboten as hunting targets because they're cute and cuddly, and it's evil to kill Bambi. It's much better to let them starve to death or be hit by cars and trucks on the roads so they can die slowly and painfully.
So a decline in hunting has a detrimental effect on "nature".
What this has to do with video games is beyond me.
The problem was prevalent long before Pong invaded our homes. Say shortly after Bambi premiered about 60 years ago? Back then it was fine to kill deer since we'd already killed off the wolves and puma and were just filling in as the top predator. Now, however, there are more deer in America than when Colombus arrived and nothing to keep their population in check as is the natural order.
Now, I'm not a hunter, never have been, probably never will, but it's in the prey's best interest to keep them at a level which is sustainable by the population and its available food, and until we allow prey back into the picture it's up to humans to see that they don't starve to death from overpopulation.
Again, video games really have nothing to do with this.

I have started wondering how Fox keeps its license as a news broadcaster, tbh... whenever I see a link to one of its 'news' shows or happen to watch it in a pub, its filled with sheer garbage and lies. Do I somehow miss all of the fact-filled, well-researched news shows, or is it really that quality all of the time?
I wonder how many people watch it without realizing its the Weekly World News in disguise?

Not only do they help with overpopulation as mentioned earlier in this thread, but the money they shell out to hunt is used for different conservation programs. ---------------------------------------

Did no one read my post? This looks like it was an AP report picked up by numerous media outlets (see link in my last post).
No, they didn't. Apparently it's much more fun to mindlessly bash the single most popular news network in the US than to actually THINK and READ.
Of course, I get most of my news off the Internet anymore.

Why should we do something FOX does not? They read a dumbass story on a wire and reproduced it. Their editors failed to exercise sound judgement and brought the stupidity to a wider audience. The bashing is richly deserved. As far as I am concerned, citations are not a waiver of responsibility. FOX is stupid and so is every other "news" network that spams "relevant" and "accessible" BS stories like this.

Nope, its because you're too busy trying to find fault with Fox and fail to realize that every news agency feeds off each other in some way and will regurgitate stories shown by other agencies. This story was an AP thing thats now being picked up by EVERY major news media including old fashioned newspapers.

Thats one way of putting it. Yes as we expanded our habitat it encroached on theirs. However, what we depeleted as natural predators we made up for in our hunting programs. But hunting is on the decline and the generations that used to hunt are losing interest mostly due to misconceptions or just plain laziness (anyone who says hunting is easy has never hunted). Deer, wild boar/pig, and other large game animals have had their populations explode and the habitat that sustain them is getting crowded. Crowding leads to food shortages, disease, and more frequent human contact. Humans are now part of the natural ecosystem whether we want to admit it or not.
Now while you can bad mouth human expansion all you want, just remember you're living in the expansion and typing a reply, microwaving your food, and enjoying your AC thanks to infrastructure built in that expansion.

Same topic:
CNN: Declining nature participation has crucial implications for current conservation efforts If you hate Fox so much - why do you believe it is the only news source?
And while we are on video games and nature - CNN is pushing a news item that video games make you stupid and fat and they should be taxed because of it. When you only watch for Fox News items with a mental filter to only find things you disagree with it makes you generally stupid, and you miss things like The coalition wants state lawmakers to create a No Child Left Inside Fund with a 1 percent tax on TVs, video games and video game equipment.
Maybe you missed CNN, but you also missed MSNBC Videophilia' is killing outdoors life
Yahoo Nature giving way to virtual reality
Guardian Wilderness under threat as visitors stay indoors
All drawing from the same AP "news" item. Nature Giving Way to Virtual Reality
Who said there is any value in any of the other available news channels around atm. They are after all owned and biased towards the same purpose.
Fox is just the most obvious choice since it's close relationship to certain administration. Fox tests the limits of human sheep like acceptance of distorted and limited reality. Fox is entertainment news with strict guidelines on what they will not cover. I feel it funny how many people are still unable to realize that the television is only about mass control.

If everyone is a mindless drone, and especially the internet generation, where does the massive amount of criticism come from? Thin air? :P
Actually, children are not becoming mindless drones, especially not in this age. They're actually moving away from it - Either forming a sense of individuality very early on, or showing a very crude form of collective consciousness. Both are facilitated by current day forms of communication. Children learn to use mobile phones and the internet earlier and earlier, meaning they have much more chances at communicating with others - It doesn't just happen on schoolyards and on playgrounds anymore. More so, they can communicate much more readily with children of different ages, something which always has been difficult before.
It's actually interesting to see how the media "TV" seems to be afraid of losing it's audience to the new media, and tries to get it back by any means possible. In the mean time, they're just scaring away the very people they're trying to get back, if they ever had them in the first place. Fact is that the people who run the backing companies are "relics" from 20+ years ago, they simply haven't kept up with developments, counting on their businesses to be profitable and without competition for a much longer time than they had originally planned. You have to remember that the internet/computer boom is only about 15-20 years old, but the people that were in charge back then are still in charge now (or at least their hand-picked successors are).
Most of those "reports" are equally guilty of having lost their sense of perspective, in the exact same way.
Developments of this kind (and speed) are relatively new, and are only speeding up. You can see that like this: The TV networks are losing their audience to the digital and on-demand media, and those are losing their audience to the internet. The "internet operators" (ISP's) are on their turn losing out on others due to not being able to close down their own networks.
It's all just people trying to get their "customers" back :)

Yet another TV media bashing video games. how surprising.
It's very simple, really. Someone playing a video game is someone not watching the television, which mean less audience, and less audience mean less money from advertising.
It's all about the money, as usual. ------------------------------------------

That's what i thought too, Fox apparently disagrees.
Actually the fee's collected for hunting/fishing permits goes into conservation programs and fish stocking programs. That is why the decline in hunters/fishers could lead to a decline. Ducks Unlimited for example spend vast amounts of their money buying wetlands and leaving them undeveloped. Please do not post pictures of players in your sig - Mitnal

Uh, isn't that helping nature?
In my state (Colorado) conservation, fire protection, and search/rescue operations are financed by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. As the popularity of the traditional outdoor sports (mostly hunting, but fishing too) declines, state conservation programs are really feeling the pinch. There are efforts to find a way to 'tax' other outdoor activities like biking, offroading, packing and climbing in order to make up the shortfall. It's a touchy issue. (Not a defense of Fox - screw those fascist jerks - just a clarification!)
