Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 12/02/2008 20:02:04 Just came across this little news article on CVG
It looks as if Fox needed more viewers or internet hits or something. I mean seriously. Videogames killing nature?

Quote: Digging from a National Academy of Sciences report, Fox says visits to parks and the issuance of hunting and fishing licenses declined between 18 and 25 percent in the 1980s and 90s, about "the period of rapid growth of video games". Coincidence? We think not!
Uh, isn't that helping nature? Unsuitable signature removed. Navgator

I'm as happy as the next guy to fling crap at Faux News but in this case it looks like Fox just picked up an Associated Press report and regurgitated it as did other media outlets (this practice is common in media).
As for "killing" the outdoors I think the presumption is that people who use the national parks are more likely to be environmentally friendly and want to see them protected. If they do not use them then they care less about environmental issues. Not sure I agree with that but that is the notion.
As for kids once again I need to point out it is up to the parents to drive their kids to the park. Most kids cannot bike to Yellowstone. If mom and/or dad do not take them then whose fault is it? The game designers? (I think not)
Besides, these days the kids can take their Nintendo to the great outdoors.

Did no one read my post? This looks like it was an AP report picked up by numerous media outlets (see link in my last post).
That said I agree with shutting down Fox News anyway. Not for a week...forever.

Edited by: Ademaro Imre on 12/02/2008 23:06:01 I am always amazed at the number of dumbasses that seem to hate Fox News without any real apparent reasons except for doing the same sort of thing that all other news broadcasters do, but obsessively watch it for all of their news intake anyway.
Same topic:
CNN: Declining nature participation has crucial implications for current conservation efforts ONE Week before Fox. If you hate Fox so much - why do you believe it is the only news source?
And while we are on video games and nature - CNN is pushing a news item that video games make you stupid and fat and they should be taxed because of it. When you only watch Fox News with a mental filter to only find things you disagree with, you miss things like The coalition wants state lawmakers to create a No Child Left Inside Fund with a 1 percent tax on TVs, video games and video game equipment.
Maybe you missed CNN, but you also missed MSNBC Videophilia' is killing outdoors life
All drawing from the same AP "news" item. Nature Giving Way to Virtual Reality
The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule it. |

It's not like the article has no point at all. I don't know that the blame should be placed on video games alone. But the trend in entertainment is in fact leading to a sedentary lifestyle.
Watching TV, surfing the net, and playing games are probably the largest sources of entertainment today.
The power went out the other day on our block, and my roomates and I barely knew what to do with ourselves, being that we were too stubborn to let a blackout make us leave our home :). That's how sad we've become due to the forms of entertainment we've become accustomed to ;).
