Well, I know EE 'Doc' Smith wrote the "Lensman" series of books - including "Second Stage Lensman" but never having read any of them, this is just a guess:

I'll have to give them a go, I've heard plenty of good things about them... (I think you could have held out for the full 'Kimball Kinnison' answer though, people round here know thier sci-fi!)
