I already know how stupid this decision was, should have made a safespot yadda yadda yadda. The question is, is it possible to see somebody that's cloaked at 100km away just by the naked eye? I warped to the moon from a random planet and sat there at 100km cloaked, and had to go do something. Came back to a pod sitting in a rookie station, with a lost full Crystal beta set.

It only takes an extra minute to make a safespot as you warp in, then warp there instead.
Someone could very easily have warped in within 2km of you and simply uncloaked you that way. Heck, they may not even have been the person that killed you, though of course it's likely that they were. ________________

If you have to warp at 100 and go afk, at least take a sharp turn in some random direction, pulse your MWD and then hit cloak. Just warping in and then sit and cloak is bad. You should have thought of that yourself tho, it's not rocket science.

Yes, people tend to warp to 100. You were just unfortunate that the pirate warped in from the same side as you and happened to land on top of you. The odds? Very low....
Warping to 100 with an active pirate in the system is a sort of paper, rock and scissors, if you're really unfortunate he lands right on top of you, but often he ends ps 100+.
At least you didn't drop anything of value.

Even warping in direct alignment with your cloaked ship will pretty much uncloak you I think. So if you just stand dead in the water right in line between gates etc ships warping between them will drop your cloak.

True - 100km is therefore the worst spot. You'd be better off at 0m as those that warp to 100km (or 50km, or 10km,...) wouldn't go past, potentially decloaking you on the way.. Having said that, if you're sitting still you're a sitting duck. Move in a random direction towards open space before cloaking.

Well, I've had people uncloak at planets numerous times when I warp at 0 and have myself been "unexplicably uncloaked" in midsafes when the overview blip as people pass by, so I'd wager to say it's how it works - however I played it safe with the "I think" comment in my original post

Warping at 70 is the best. It makes those 100km battleships say aw man I'm so slow I wish I could catch him, it gives me time to align before yonder arazu decloaks and tries to scram, and it gives the warp to zero(ers) 56km to cross before I am in scram range

I thought that bubbles used to have this effect soon after they were introduced...
Anyways, if you don't want to die - warp to 100km, get 3000m above/below the warp in point and then cloak while still moving. It's harder to hit a moving target than a stationary one.

Sorry, still pretty new to the game, but why is it suggested you continue to move while cloaked versus standing still and cloaked?
Also, is that what the onboard scanner is for? To also pick up any cloaked ships?

ha, ha, very funny. But due to the very, VERY remote chance that you are not trolling, and also for new players who might be reading this, you move after you cloak because it is harder to hit a moving target than a still one. Consider a real life example. You are playing "Hide and Seek" in a 1000m^2 area. Let us presume that the seeker can see the hider if it is within 1m of the seeker. Let us also presume that the hider stands perfectly still during the entire game. In order to guarantee that the seeker will find the hider, all the seeker has to do is guarantee that all points within the 1000m^2 area are within 1m of the seeker at some point during the search. The easiest way to do this is to stop at the southwestern corner of the play area, travel east 1000m, then north 2m, then west 1000m, then north 2m, then east 1000m, etc... Sooner or later the seeker will come within 1m of the hider, no matter where the hider is.
However, if the hider moves, then the seeker can no longer presume that the hider is not in any of the areas that the seeker had searched before. As such, there is no pattern that the seeker may take to guarantee that the hider will be found.
That is why it is best to move while cloaked, than to stay still. Obviously, though, if you are safe spotted, then it is *HIGHLY* unlikely that those searching for you will be able to find your grid, and even if they did, they have no way of knowing if that grid is the right one.

Yes you are. However there are two alternative ways how he could have been found; one is that he was scanned out just before he cloaked (unlikely), the other one is a result of the fact that safespots are not nearly as 'random' as people think. If you (as an example) do a gangwarp with, say, 10 people in bs and you all make a ss at more or less the same time (say... within 2 seconds of eachother), you'll probably find gangmates in your safespot upon warp to it. could have been a guy just going through a bunch of ss'ses between two gates who got lucky.
dunno tho

OK, cloak story time.
So I'm wandering around 0.0 in my Buzzard, scouting a camp so we can bust it open and get our guys out of station. Had intel that they didn't have a bubble up for whatever reason, so I warp to station at 100 (cloaked, of course) to see what's up. Sure enough, there's no bubble up, but as soon as I drop warp, some crazy corpmate (who wasn't ganged with us) drops out right on top of me and decloaks me before I can move off. Spent the next five minutes dodging ceptors and Vagas, praying they didn't get close enough to decloak me again. Fortunately, they didn't seem to have mastered 3-dimensional thinking -- Aeran Hermas

I would pretty much don't mind landing in the same grid as some other bloke (I actually would since I tend to make safespots aligned between a temporary safespot and either another temp safespot or a celestial object and not directly between two celestial objects when I've got the time), but the part where the other guy in the newbship approaches and uncloaks him just like that is what made me really suspicious. =|
I don't know the netcode behind EvE (and I doubt there's public documentation), but it might be possible if every player's coordinates is transmitted no matter if cloaked or not. What would stop somebody from sniffing out the coordinates of the cloaked prey and approach it, assuming that it's possible to warp to user manipulated coordinates (i.E. not a bookmark stored on the server but client side coordinates)?
And it just kinda reminded me of a somewhat similiar exploit in a completely different game. The game was Ragnarok Online (considering it's a no-brain korean grinder it used to be quite funny and hey, at least it's not WoW ) and the exploit was as follows: Assassin and Rogue class have hiding skills and if you had something monitoring/manipulating the incoming packets you could just flip the bit that said "INVISIBLE", see and walk over to the poor fella and uncloak him for general lulz.
While writing up the post, another possible explanation came to my mind: Both people had the same Safespot bookmark (I don't wanna speculate why) and second dude warped in some way off (maybe Warp to X or just general warp inaccuracy) and then approached the BM. Still weird, though. ------------ You get a wonderful view from the point of no return. |

Sorry, I am not a troll. The day I become a troll is the day I shall kill myself, heh.
But anyway, thanks for the response. I really am new.
EDIT: And to continue my run of newbness...what is "safe-spotting"? Thanks again!
Hehe that's not all you can do. Me and my friends had a program that modified the bits being sent towards the server, because atck spd was monitored client side, to make our skills not have their delay. So instead of going "pierce, pierce, pierce, pierce." with my knight, it was going "PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP". People would flip out and go, "My guild needs your build, -now-". Could drop holy priests solo with it.
That game had so many holes in it. <3 no-sp teleport bots.

This.
quotage to pound in your skull, when i see someone warp to a planet i try to rate their intelligence: Doorknob, i will warp to 0, slightly higher then a door knob, 100, if neither, theyre already at a safe and it wont matter.

Not wanting to go too far offtopic, but ASPD with skills hack sounds like a badly administrated and outdated private server. I think those were never on officials or at least fixed pretty fast. Broken private servers were fun, though.
And yeah, I've known quite some other fun exploits for RO as well, they just didn't seem relevant to that thread. ------------ You get a wonderful view from the point of no return. |

Originally by: Cpt Oort Sorry, still pretty new to the game, but why is it suggested you continue to move while cloaked versus standing still and cloaked?
Also, is that what the onboard scanner is for? To also pick up any cloaked ships?
Because if you've warped to a spot with a single action, then anyone else can warp to that spot in a single action too. If someone sees (or guesses) that you warped to planet X from gate Y, they can do the same thing and land where you are (or, rather, warp to 100km and then burn in to 0km). If you move off in a random direction at an unknown speed you make it vastly less likely they will find you (the difficulty of finding you increases with the cube of the time since you started moving; after a minute or two only the most stubborn of pirates will keep looking).
If you make a bookmark while in warp and then return to that BM, you're effectively impossible to locate without a prober/system scanner, especially if you then use that BM to make several more which are not directly in line between any two celestial objects.
If you're travelling a lo-sec/0.0 route with any kind of frequency, then you'd be very well advised to make a safespot or two in each system, as well as a bookmark about 155-1000Km from each gate that you will warp to.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

I MWD away and go wtf in local, and the guy replys "Thats how I roll."
True story. Still wondering how it happened, since theres nothing that could have possibly been done to locate me (I mean it, no system scanning array, no covert ops pilots in local, nothing...)
He either scanned you before you cloaked or had a bm for your safespot from a previous scan.
Were you moving in that safespot or sitting still in one position while cloaked?

back in 05-06 I had a vagabond exit warp right through my covops on a random planet.
Yes, I always warped to non-usual ranges and the first thing I always, ALWAYS do is start moving to random directions.
So I was there pulsing with my scanner open and checking for the hostile untill he shows up on my overview, upon which time I hear the decloak sound. Closed the scanner and saw he coming to a full stop about 10km off me. I was so amazed at what had just happened that I didn't even click the warp button. All I managed to do was actually check that I was moving, and I was dammit.
That one I still remember as if it was today.
