Ugh. The Impairor looks good, but it looks good right now anyway. Great success
The Ibis made me think, wtf is this a Sleeper frig or something? The design absolutely doesn't look like it fits the Caldari look. And it doesn't even have to be the ugly wtf Caldari look like Bantams, Moas and Basilisks. The new Ibis looks nothing like any Caldari ship, the design is completely out of line with the rest of the ships, even the decent ones.
The Velator is lol. Good job on making it look worse. It seems to be unfinished, like it needs plates or something applied, and the color is terrible. The current Velator looks a little ridiculous, but it's still better than whatever the **** the new one is supposed to be.
The Reaper seems to be suffering from the Ibis disease. Whoever designed these likes rounded shapes way too much, and didn't spend enough time analyzing user input on what makes a ship look good. There's so much user feedback on ship models on the forums, only a total lazy ass wouldn't be able to find any. Reaper 2.0 looks more substantial than the pile of scrap Reaper 1.0 is, but it looks way too cartoony and not Minmatar at all.
But of course since design decisions are shared with the public only when they are already past the point of no return, these are what we'll be getting. Color me not surprised |

If these really are the future rookie ships, I think CCP did a pretty good job.
The Velator is still an asymmetrical mess, but it has harder lines which give it more of a "spaceship" appeal, as opposed to the current one which is more "spaceshit". The ibis would have been my choice, had CCP said "choose one of the four to remake". The current version of the Ibis looks like one of those cardboard toys that comes as a flat sheet that you trim and fold into shape. the Impairor doesn't look all that different. What it needed the most in redesign, in my opinion, was to ditch the rectangular panel-style engine housing. It would be nice to have seen that replaced with something more in line with the design of the hull. I've not flown Minmatar that much, so can't really comment on the Reaper.
Would be neat to see these implemented.

Velator: I didn't think this ship could look any worse/more stupid, but there it is anyway. Kinda reminds me of a Junk-yard Eris though, so that's good. The old one just look like flabby, waaay overlong-necked/hunchbacked bit of stupid leering at you, this one is at least more properly hard edged.
Impairor: Meh. Still looks too disturbingly leech-like to me.
Reaper: Too overtly asymmetrical--those engine-pod thingies need to be brought in line with each other on either the fore or aft ends, and the vertical fins moved back out-board where they belong. Also make the pods just a skosh longer. (Lyrra sniffles: I always liked the old Reaper, dammit!) But, especially important--harsher/harder edges needed, this model is a bit too "soft" if you see what I mean.
Ibis: Ooooh, I like this--like a cross between a baby Tengu and CalNavy Hookbill. Nice that they took the second-stupidest, dumpiest, aesthetic joke of a ship and dethroned Minmatar as the king of badassery. Surface detailing's a bit busy for my tastes, but I can live with that. Hans Jagerblitzen for CSM 7! (Mittens, you may not want to admit it, but your day in the sun is over. Next!)

This. I remember being completely offended about how ****** the Ibis looked. I think I even abandoned it in space (my assumption was I would never see it again.)
Of course, I later docked in my pod... which made me think DO NOT WANT
Also, IIRC it was Mittens who pushed for these to be redesigned based on this logic. So place the praise there - "Do not touch anything unnecessarily. Beware of pretty girls in dance halls and parks who may be spies, as well as bicycles, revolvers, uniforms, arms, dead horses, and men lying on roads -- they are not there accidentally." -Soviet infantry manual, issued in the 1930's |

Pushed for redesign but the art director is trying to style everything after the tech 3 ships the current new art standard.

Impairor looks good, but always was the best looking noob ship.
Ibis looks more like a gallente ship tbh, but regardless now looks good.
Velator is some stupid foreshadowing of the ugly Arazu and catalyst. Both ships are stupid looking and combining them in the velator does not make any of them any better.
Reaper has always been a piece of ****. Seriously, it looks totally thrown together. Like scafolding given some engines. Why could it not look more like a hurricane, Maelstrom, Typhoon, whatever. Plenty of decent looking Minmatar ships to emulate. Unfortunately, what it presently looks like, and this redesign still leaves it looking like, is a jumbled mess that is only similar to the Burst (one of the stupidest looking ships in the game). |

It makes perfect sense that the most basic Matar ship would be exactly this . Especially when you consider some of their larger and higher tech ships are rusty piles of scaffolding and wingy bits. - "Do not touch anything unnecessarily. The Imparor hasn't really changed much. Cleaned up somewhat, streamlined...
The Ibis is really out of place with the mini-tengu look. I was hoping it would get the Raven facelift. It's a good looking small ship, but it's not an Ibis.
I do like the new art-deco Velator! Nice!
The Reaper needs to lose the fake-gun looking things. Otherwise not bad (if you imagine the new black-and-rust textures on it)! |

Especially when you consider some of their larger and higher tech ships are rusty piles of scaffolding and wingy bits. Thing is though, we're now several years (and tech levels) after the time when the Minmatar actually started needing to kludge ships together, and a lot of Minmatar ships now are capsuleer-built. The designs should be starting to get cleaned up and refined.
IMO there should be a shiny kickass capsuleer version of ships (the ones we build and fly) and the NPCs get all the old beat-up obsolete designs (navies aside) since they don't have the kind of resources we do. Ibis and Impairor are excellent.
Velator is still weird, and actually less gallente than before.
The Reaper is proof that in MMOG's, the worst looking ships/equipment are the ones with the best stats that everyone wants to use, despite being horridly ugly. In MMOG's, you can't be powerful and NOT look like a dork |

I find it difficult to judge anything about these ships without the proper shaders applied. No colors, no reflections etc. make for a very different model than what would be seen in-game.
That said, I can at least judge the shape, and I must echo the folks wondering WTF CCP has against symmetry. Just because you can doesn't mean you should... |
