Mine was the call sign from the old mech warrior 2 days, part of the Iron Wolves Lance, I was the xo in that lance and it was fun days. To bad I've only meet one of my old squad mates since then.

Ahh Battletech, yeah I was big into that for a long time.
As for my own name, I was trying to think of a kind of "cyber" type of name, like something having to do with hacking or electronics, because original thought was I was gonna be a covert ops recon pilot, or specialize in ewar.
So I started going through wikipedia reading about technology, and stumbled on Encryption.
Cipher - an algorithm used to encrypt or decrypt a message.
7 - number often associated with God.
Message from God - You know like the Blues Brothers "We're on a mission from God"
I know that all sounds convoluted and weird but hey it makes sense to me.

I misremembered the name of a character from The Reality Disfunction by Peter F. Hamilton. Surname should be Rawand  , I'm happy with this though  .

This might sound bad but it was about 5-6 years ago when i chose mine,it was origionally"goodby2u"(yes,misspelled in its glory)I decided on this because a group of friends of mine at the time thought it was the best one,so then I started my account on runescape with this.
I changed it to goodby4u as I made an account before that I screwed over and it was caldari which I hated so this was the closest thing.
And yes at 12 I was a little stupid boy who didnt know how to speel"bye"

Then got bored of that and moved to EVE and kept the name! :)

Mangala is an ancient name for the planet Mars and solaris just has a nice ring to it.
All my alts bar two share the solaris surname and have a Mars thematic first name: Hellas; Echus; Arsia; Pavonis; Angaraka;
Areos Aster - means Star of Mars. A new pvp alt I have setup for the Red V Blue thing thats knocking around the boards.
Ammik - an industrial alt I grabbed from an old friend.

I choose Steel, and since this was EVE I wanted a first name to go with it. I dont have much imagination so I copied the name from a girl in my school with the same surname. I now regret picking such a 'girly' name.
Alts are called Jenova and Aeris with the same surname.

A long, long time ago, when I first started playing Warhammer 40k I was trying to come up with a catchy name for my farseer...Screwed around with letters until I found a name that just looked good on paper. "Tydraad." Was my first character, two characters later slapped "Karyuudo" in front of it. Means something in a different language to the equivalent of "hunter" IIRC. Looks like romanized Japanese. I'm...not really happy with it. :(
I secretly hope that someday CCP will implement name changing and I'll be able to switch it to "Addison Caine." Have an alt reserving the name, just in case...

Got the toon from a friend who had to stop playing. His nickname was 'Franga' due to his surname being 'Frangos' - which is Greek. However, where I live (Australia) the word is also slang for a condom.

Noachis Terra, Ophir Chasma, Isidis Planitia, Tharsis Montes,... There is a heap of good names up there. ^_^

There is always the dictionary method. Pick a random dictionary (medical dictionary for lols) and pick a random page and a random word
Or try to think something that'll fit with your character, his role. If you're roleplaying per-se then more realistic, less serious, the more ridiculous the better
Or you could name him after your pet. My family named our cat Erwin after Erwin Schrodinger's cat

nah, i have always used brainless and bimbo as names for my online characters since 2000, along with bozo, ashsa and hennep (my favorite plant).
brainless was taken so i merged the two, it gives an impression of shallow stupidity and also generates a smirk on the odd occasion

Well about 4 years ago (come april) i got this mail with an offer for a 2 week free trial of eve (apparently at some point i had signed myself up for the beta but never thought about it after that)
I knew a few people that were playing other mmogs so i though, wth, lets give it a try and see if it's really that great.
So i downloaded the client, and went into the character creation part, and seeing how i was lazy and never expected to play beyond the 2 week trial i came up with my current name (Hunter has been my handle on many other games but originates from a game called Mechcommander)
So here i am almost 4 years later, regretting the day i came up with my name, but even if ccp would give me the opportunity to change it, i'm not sure i would, i'm too used to it now.
But theres a lesson to be learned here boyz and girlz! don't be lazy

hmmm... well, I'm somewhat laid-back as a person. but as the saying goes: beware the fury of a patient man.
and I wanted a name that reflected that ;)
plus.. I don't like Piracy, or pirates... so I hoped a career as a concord-officer, or atleast a bounty hunter wouldn't be completely out of the picture.. so to speak.
plus it has an added benefit of giving some superstitious pirates pause as well ;)
there are times it'll backfire though.

I usually name myself after historical figures. Niccolo is Machiavelli's first name. Simple as that.
My RL name is Roland (go figure on historical names). I've tried using it in games, but it's really weird when people call me by my RL name in a game. I don't know why, it just is. I guess it destroys that "escape" thing MMO's offer.
My most common internet name is Felix Fritz. I love Felix the cat and Fritz comes from playing too many WWII shooters, and hearing DIE FRITZ! every 3 minutes. Kinda stupid, but I enjoy it.

got mine when i was about 17...a real life friend started calling me nightcrawler (NC to make it simple)when we lived at school...i had a bad habbit sneaking out during the night to smoke and just walk around hiding from night guards;)
people started to call me nc in real life and it just sort of became...my name and what i prefered to be called,both in real life and in games.

mines from the fact that my first name is dan, and i have attempted to take over a country 372 times, this year.

While starting a character in E&B, I originally tried Thor and got rejected. Then tried Orion and got rejected once again. Thus Thorion came next. Last name was combination of the latin words meaning 'Death' & 'son'.

My character name is what my wife and I decided we would call our first son whenever he was born. We picked the name out a few years ago. I liked the name so I used it for my EVE character, thinking that I would stop playing well before I had any kids. I was wrong. I have a 1 month old son now who shares the name with my EVE character and my wife hates me for it.

Victor -- It happens to be at the top of my list of good male names, right there with 'Alexander';
Valka -- Got it from an anime character (misspelled a bit, pardon), brownie points (not redeemable for sexual favors of any kind) if you guess/know the anime/character. I was later informed that a slightly different spelling (vßlka) is Czech for 'war' -- how cool is that?

I knew that a hotspot for real life piracy is around the Sulu Straight, in the southwestern part of the Philippines; I saw Jolo as a city name for the area. I also knew several Filipino cultures use "Ka" as an honorific (like "Mr."), short for their words for comrade or brother.

I got this one from doing a name search of Canadian places and reversed it: Graven Tors.
I took an alt's name from Rifts [ I think ]and added Teh, I've no bloody idea why that word is the way it is: Teh Juicer [was gonna be my booster user and drug runner but seeing as how I can't use]

The achura character looked Chinese to me so I tried to come
up with a name that sounded Chinese ...
An added bonus is that the pronunciation was ambiguous and that
helps a lot in fleet battles. In hindsight I should have selected
the name "secondary" as someone once suggested. Just imagine the FC
yelling "Primary is secondary"

Well I got my nicname as long as I could think of it. This was because I sucked at soccer so i got the nick of a famous Soccer star.
Later on I endet up using Djego27 in most of the games as standard Nic because the Name itself was mostly taken I added the a part of my Birthdate.
I also started Eve with that Nic but as I mentioned so many People the Numbers in her Names I changed my mind a bit, It just didnŠt look right.
So started this Char.

I always come up with new names for every game I play, I'm not going into what I think of the alternative.
Danton was from me wanting something french yet not fruity and Marcellus came about when my first choice didn't fare well with the naming restrictions in place then, still don't think CCP is up to date on hyphens.

My character wears a black hoody and seems to be quite emo from appearance, so I named him Forluhn. 'For Long' kinda meaning that emo people are forever searching for the happiness they never find. Searching for a long time.
