Tranquility will undergo an extended downtime on Wednesday, 20 February. The start time is 11:00 GMT and the length of the downtime is expected to be three hours. During this time, a patch will be applied to Trinity consisting of one fix to correct the problems caused by the Trinity 1.0.2 patch.
Patch Notes are now available. Any updates will be highlighted with green text.

An absolutely classic CCP moment. Trinity 1.0.3 deploying a single fix to fix the single fix in 1.0.2 that broke something else.
Better luck this time guys. Shame the extended downtime will be on my day "working from home".

Step by Step Guide
Windows (XP and Vista):
1. Press START and select Run on Windows XP, in Vista, press START and paste the link into "Start search" ( which is directly above the START button " Easiest is to use the Windows button on your keyboard + R ( works on both Vista and XP ). 2. Copy "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\CCP" ( without the " ) into the address bar of the window that opened. 3. Remove the folder called "EVE". 4. Start the game and log in.
Have completed this, still have "incompatible version"

The little know-how provided by CCP doesn't work for me. I found the EVE settings/cache directory in the C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP path. The problem is that both the local settings and the application data folders are hidden ones, so its necessary to turn off the hiding of the hidden files in the explorer to be able to see these folders (can't help with the exact steps, I have a localized windows, but its under something called tools/folder settings/view/special settings/hidden files or folders, apply to all folders)

What complete rubbish ccp.. you have taken a game that worked fine till this patch and now doesnt afterwards.. EPIC FAIL.. u might consider testing these things ahead of time.. and if the answer is there was testing done and this still occurred... then there may be an opportunity to return some of your labour to the welfare line.. totally unacceptable intrusion of game play time..

I don't know much about computers but have just followed this advice for XP:
Press START and select Run on Windows XP, in Vista, press START and paste the link into "Start search" ( which is directly above the START button " Easiest is to use the Windows button on your keyboard + R ( works on both Vista and XP ). Copy "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\CCP" ( without the " ) into the address bar of the window that opened. Remove the folder called "EVE". Start the game and log in.
and it worked for me. I'm in. But oh dear. After the boot.ini thingy I would have thought they would have tested this. Dissapointed *sigh*

This part is for all of you that haven't played eve for over 4 yrs: this is not a one time incident or isolated issue. every major patch or update that ccp has performed since i started playing has involved "repatching" to fix and repair. believe it or not, the dt's and reboots from patching/updating were so bad several yrs ago, that ccp granted all eve'ers 1 day of free game time.
this part is for ccp: eve is a great game. it has kept me interested for over 4 yrs. my only suggestion to ccp is that you take all your patches/updates/upgrades home and play them on your average joe machines. your box dell builds. your standard home builds. that way you mess up your machine and not mine. i think that if you were screwing up you own personal machine that you would take more care with mine.
this is for everyone: this all said, remember, we are dealing with a game that has so much content and data that it would be hard to keep up with all the branches in the programing. i'm sure that if you wanted to pay for your update/upgrades/patches, that ccp would be more than happy to do "WOW" upgrades and not give them to us for free. personally, i've done wow. i don't wont to pay for my upgrades.
ccp, keep chuggin'! just do it better!

Edited by: Macdeth on 19/02/2008 22:01:27 Hey CCP guys, now that you're doing daily patches, please push out some low-risk client UI fixes like: - Ships/Items breaking on ship-change & setting autopilot destination - Capital Navigation Window's close button doesn't work until you minimize & right click - Contracts window start page not being initially clickable because although visible, it isn't "raised" until you click its tab
Saving low-risk client-only fixes for things that drive us batty daily until major patches is, quite frankly, insane. Especially when they're things that probably don't even require a machonet version bump. You probably don't have any staff resources dedicated toward patch management, hence why you save up for monolithic patches, but I would posit that doing so would be worthwhile to improve the quality of your finished product.
Edit: And while I'm at it, please make some server-side changes to the chat/evemail/corp application & related systems such that you can silently filter any message that contains a blacklisted string, and then maintain a blacklist of all the isk seller website domain names. It probably only needs to strip white space (although maybe flexibility for other tokens is best) because if the domain name is mangled too badly, nobody will ever get through to it to buy, unlike with, say, viagra/cialis spam.

ok CCP this is how its supposed to go:
1) Development server (where the devs do their thing)
2) Beta server (where beta testers do their thing and discover these issues)
3) PRODUCTION server (where we do our thing)
Issues like this SHOULD NEVER reach the production server!
As a NOVICE game developer, even I know this, so why don't these CCP "developers" know it?
one of the best ways to **** players off is to break their favorite game. and when its a PAID game, and players can not login, they will get VERY upset. NO one likes to have their money messed with. and by breaking the game in such a way as to deny a player access, as in this case, players will do stupid things like yell at the developers, and quit the game.
CCP needs to change their testing methods, or risk losing players. this is the 2nd MAJOR mess up since i joined just a bit over 4 months ago (other posts suggest this has been happening for 4 yrs? am i to expect this every few months?)
if so i think ill take MY money elsewhere.
why?
i was lucky in that i wasnt able to use the "Premium" graphics, and so i didnt have my boot.ini wiped out. but one must wonder how many players left the game over that (and how many even found out the game was the issue? many folks updated then couldnt reboot their puters, i'd imagine many of them thought they were hacked, or had a nasty virus, and had NO clue that their problem was due to some idiot at CCP).
today i get up expecting the update, but was totally unprepared for this mess.
i've done CCP's "fix", and still no joy. what else can i do?
i can only sit and wait and *hope* that CCP figures it out, while i lose both time (which is gone forever) & money.
come on CCP, better hurry before we all move on to a new game.

Hi
This is why we need some skill chaining ... I set a 18 hr skill before the patch on Tuesday ... cant log on now nor am I able to correct their mistake.
And I am away for several days to the weekend so all that time I could be skilling goes down the drain . The real problem with that is that I am counting on having certain skills ready by a certain time .
Its not a hard ask , if things are going to go so pair shaped just have some contingency plans for the peeps who are paying you.

Although this seems like a minor inconvenience to most people, its a pain in the ass for us Australian/Asian players where currently downtime is between 10PM and 11PM. These extended downtimes (the scheduled and unsheduled ones that have been happening more often lately) are a major annoyance.
Can CCP please re-examine the downtime schedule and move it to a more convenient time to accomodate ALL players as much as possible. I would like to see some stats as to the number of players from different timezones to see where the quietest period in fact is, the downtime schedule hasn't changed in years and it needs to be revisited. PLEASE!

Been playing for close to 3 years and CCP always comes up with something that makes me wonder if they actually know what they are doing most of the times...
1st, the arrogance:
Originally by: CCP Wrangler ... But quite frankly there is one patch note here so there will most likely not be any updates and I'm not even sure if there's that much to discuss anyway. But if you find something, knock yourselves out! But as usual, make sure you set a long skill training during patch day!
Everyone was wondering just the same why something so small needed 3 hours downtime. We go along with it anyway. But 3 hours wasn't enough Close to 5 hours downtime and we, the paying customers, had to fix our computers in order to be able to log in game.
And finally (I hope) we get another 3 hours downtime (crossing my fingers) to fix the mess made. That's close to 8 hours of downtime (if everything goes well) in 2 days. And you know what ****es me even more?... Not one single apology was made to the paying customers |

Guess what?!?!
It's not "Application Data" on Vista, you ass hats, It is C:\Program Data. While there is an Application Data directory there, it is not the right directory.
Why does it not surprise me in the slightest to discover that CCP has not thought through properly how to fix stuff?
Geez, guys, this is a computer. It takes specific, exact instructions, kiddies.
Clue.
CB
P.S. For those of you on Vista having this trouble, here's the steps:
1. Go to C:\Program Data. 2. Find the "CCP" folder in it. 3. You can kill that folder.
Re-start Eve. That should get you in. It worked for me.

I complained alot in the previous trinity 1.02 patch and am still reeling from the effects
but I know its hard on your Dev team. Best of luck ok Dev team and don't let us silly gamers get to ya. It is your job after all and I have no great knowledge about game dev at all...
Great job so far and Dev team and all goodluck
oh yes for mac users in order to play 1.02 you need to delete the WHOLE EVEonline preferences file in the users/library/preferences folder :)
good luck CCP Best wishes to the dev and sorry for the rants (the kid in me still lurks)

I tried this, but..... CCP isn't a folder there. In fact there is nothing relating to EVE. Any thoughts? I'm running Vista (sadly), and can't find anything following any other instructions given earlier.
I don't know if anyone else gets this but, my client won't even come up. The splash screen comes up for a split second, then dies. I'm downloading the baseline client now to see what happens.

It's not "Application Data" on Vista, you ass hats, It is C:\Program Data. While there is an Application Data directory there, it is not the right directory.
Why does it not surprise me in the slightest to discover that CCP has not thought through properly how to fix stuff?

I think CCP deserve a bit of stick to be honest. Ordinarily, I don't have many problems when it comes to patches and when I do, everyone has them and they're comparatively minor in the grand scheme of things.
When I attempted to log on last night, saw the issue with auto-download and then somehow managed to download it, to be confronted with the 'Incompatable' message, I just went to bed. I looked at the forums first but had no intention of messing around with files that I should never have to touch and that may cause problems with the client or further patches down the line. I was fairly certain that CCP would release a subsequent patch that would fix it.
They will tonight so, great no harm done for me at least. (I hope)
But you have to get a little suprised at least by the fact that the patch obviously hadn't been tested; that the information from CCP about the nature of the problem and the solution was slow to surface (Yet again); and that they were content for the users to take responsibility for getting their screw-up fixed with potentially disastrous consequences.
Not everyone here is a tech.
Not very clever. I'll never quit this game over these kind of screw-ups but someone should be getting slapped for it. |

Does anyone else think it strange that the patch patched 26 (or was it 56) items yet they told us that only 1 bug about protocols was being fixed? I can understand that it might be possible if the same buggy code was included into a number of executables... but there are not that many executables in Eve. I wonder what else was patched and why they did not want to tell us?

It worked for me.
This is what i did:
I didnt try this on XP, cuz i mainly use Vista.
I have 2 eve clients installed, 1 Premium and 1 classic. When i updated the premium one and tried to stard the game i got a wierd error with some /bin corrupted files.
So i updated the classic one, which worked perfectly and just copied the /bin from the classic folder to the premium one. This worked without erasing anything from AppData(vista)
On xp, if you cannot delete the folder CCP in Application Data, just rename it. The game will look for ..Application Data/CCP/ and since is renamed it should create another one and work fine. Also restart after applying patch. ----------------------------------

But hey, while you're at it - if you plan to deploy 1.0.3 to fix today's fix for a fix, can you please add something small, like the ability to delete votes older than half a year or delete finished contracts older than half a year? Thank you...
By the way - Vista seems to have way less problems with EVE than XP ever had - maybe because XP is patched for over 2000 times now, maybe because XP is nothing but a slightly improved Windows 2000. Get Vista, that's evolved from Server 2003. Service Pack 1 is out, so the biggest arguement you had against moving on is gone. --- This is your Captain speaking. One question: So when are people in Q&A going to start loosing their jobs over stuff like this? Boot.ini and client lockouts within a single business quarter of one another? A failed patch when there was only a single item (according to official sources) being rolled out? Wait... I've made a tereible assumption! IS there a Q&A department to fire?

OMG another 3 hours DT to fix the problem you tried to fix yesterday, well all hands on deck this sucks, we pay money real life money to play this game, i would have no problem with the game crashing once in a while if it was something we bought in the store for a one time fee, like most games. but since we pay a monthly fee and you robb us of many hours a week do we get a refund for lost gametime, since its almost everyday the DT is extended, or like it is now, we cant get online after the new patch ??? just have to say if this was any other type of business the people in charge of this operation would have been fired for incompetence a long time ago, cause if there is something that looses players for a game then its complications concerning the simple of things, like actually getting ingame. and i know you have to take alot of crap, but all you need to do so you dont get all this anger and dissatisfaction sendt your way is get some propper people to work for you that takes responsebility for the game crashing.

I'd quite like to see an explanation from the devs as to why this happened.
Surely they tested this before deployment, it's silly that this has to happen. The DT is no matter to me because I'm at uni for it, however for other people this is incredibly frustrating, and I would have thought after building up a 40k+ player base CCP would be able to find these sorts of things before putting the patch out.

CCP u set the benchmark in underperformance and rubbish service.. I add my voice to the chorus of players who ask how can this happen? I am a newish player to EVE but i dont mind telling you it hasnt taken you long to make me hot under the collar.. In a few short months i have seen that you are borderline incapable as a company of managing your content development in a fashion that is that doesnt liberally abuse the relationship you have with me as a customer.. Not sure if your on top of the concept but when you charge me real life $$$ for the opportunity to play your game its generally good form to follow through on that commitment.. You have my money and you have my playing time and that is tragic.. My second gripe and again i ask yu to bear in mind.. I am a new player.. but even with next to no tenure in game its clear to me ur game balancing staff simply have no clue.. the upcomming changes to ammar do nothing for ammar (Change for the sake of change), in fact most the changes appear to be for the sake of change only.. and some of the changes like the "enhancement" to the deimos tank by switching out a low slot to a medium slot are imho outright dishonest.. But i digress..
As a company you will need to do better if u want to keep my business.. your game is pretty cool and is rich in content but let me sound the warning.. players will leave you in droves regardless if u cant deliver a professional standard of service on all fronts.....

Yeah, this is annoying. Yeah, this might even be "bad". But I and I'm sure many others have surely been subjected to far worse for far longer, and in some cases for far more real world cash.
Would you rather CCP be bought out by, oh, I don't know, let's say Sony Online Entertainment? Or worse? ( Does worse than SOE even exist outside of Redmond, Washington? )
At the end of the day, it's just a game. You aren't making your living from it, and if you are, then a great big middle finger to you, you ISK selling, channel spamming bastiges.
Addictions and habits are a *****. Sometimes it's a good thing for the pusher to withhold your "fix" from you so that you can get a little perspective and clarity in your life.
CCP, carry on. PeePee CaCa happens. Nobody is perfect and a few hours without a "game" shouldn't be a cause for high blood pressure and vitriol.

Hmm, let's see: - taxes! - interest of TC dealers - server maintenance fees - network provider fees - hardware upgrades - advertising - etc. etc.
So for sure it's not 3M per month, that they have in their pockets :)
And besides, having as big a computer program as EVE is, and the multiplicity of environments it has to run on, leaves space for unchecked areas of it - thus bugs are inevitable.
Also, a 3h DT is only 2h more than usual - why not go and see a movie, or visit some RL friends - or maybe - just maybe - clean up the room(s) of your kid(s), or your own ?

Evemon is reporting that the server is up but only 3 pilots on it <- read that as noone is having fun. I assume that means wait till 14.00 and see what happens rather than fret...
Course, thanks for the info CCP! You must know it'd be confusing with some without yesterdays issue now actually having it. Of course taking into account your past record of information disemmination and pure pure comedy of competetance.

i've found it handy to download the full install everytime there's a "single fix", or if i get messages about "incompatible protocol" when connecting. same thing happened yesterday after the 1.0.2, after downloading the full install there was no problems... (though now i'm getting incompatible protocol message, but it's still downtime and the patch isn't available yet, i'd assume that is why :P)

Fail!
So yesterday you released a patch to fix a login issue for a few. It's not like we have the same problem and should only be client side right? That should take less than three hours! And on top of that we had this problem with the previous patch that didn't even work in the first place and was withdrawn. So a hotfix was posted in the news section that solved that problem but still you release a patch to fix the problem for those who don't know how to properly remove a friggin folder.
And still, this of course has to be done using that very same stupid patching system where the SERVERS have to be patched just because the clients version number change instead of having something called a "PROTOCOL VERSION NUMBER"!
I am still waiting for 1.0.4 that will say:
This patch will adress the problem with the AUTOPATCHER and completely separate the server build from the client build. So that regular people who didn't have the problem in the first place won't be punished by the stupidity of "others" (CCP and computer MORONS)
Blowing off steam as i wait for the mandatory 3 hour downtime and i can only guess it will be another 30 - 60 minutes after that...
Cheers! ---------------

Yes, the servers are online. Yes, there is a 3 hours dt. No, the servers are not open to players. No, those are not ppl playing, they are testers. Yes, there will be a patch, hence the 1.0.3 instead of 1.0.2. No, the patch is not available for download yet. No, the servers have never been open to players before the specified time. Yes, this is sarcasm. No, you may not ask me on a date P.S. No trees were hurt during the production of this message, however, a large number of electrons were temporarily disrupted |

Edited by: Elseer Radak on 20/02/2008 13:24:09 All, I found myself unable to log on after this latest patch (I ran fine until the dt for 1.0.3". Investigating I found the directory of "c:\appdata\ccp" did not exists and never did exist.
Now I run three clients on a single Vista x64 installation. I use the old shortcut method "c:\eve-install-1\eve.exe /END /LUA:OFF" for each of the three installs. In this configuration, the cache folder is located within that directory. The key is to delete all subdirectories of "c:\eve-install-1\cache\MachoNet\" (and iterate through any other directories like "c:\eve-install-2" you may launch from. Do not touch the "cache\settings" folder or you'll loose your overlay settings and don't touch the text files in "cache\browser\*.txt" files or you'll loose your bookmarks and trusted/banned sites lists.

Edited by: Ma Zhiqiang on 20/02/2008 13:29:43 There are many people complaining about the lack of customer relation CCP seem to have. I'm can't say I disagree. I think the problem is that CCP doesn't have any competition with their creation of EVE online. I guess that's why they have been able to not deal with many problems with the game, and get away with it...
As for time reimbursement.. I haven't noticed any of that when the server have had a meltdowns and crashes from time to time...

Correct me if im wrong but Eskimoes live in Greenland, Canada and northern Russia and so on. they are not really related to the Scandinavian breed. Icelandic people are a mix of all scandinavians and possibly some links to scottish and gaelic etc etc. Vikings had a very similar language to the modern Icelandic.
But don't quote me on that... I just think that is true.
Furthermore, Iceland has a lukewarm climate due to the ocean temperature and the fact that volcanoes and hot springs cover the island. Penguins like it a bit chillier...
Just some "inaccurate" information on that topic. ---------------

Same here, I used the method again I used yesterday (copying compiled.code from the /script to the cache folder in all users) and now its telling me not accepting connections instead of the incompatible protocol message. It's nice to fix a fix, but I guess it will be an extra fix for most people.

if you compare old norse, and old english (and actually know how to read both), they're pretty similar in terms of phonetics and trough that words. all that is different is some amount of word realignment, some words, and the fact that both use a different character to reprecent "th" sound (cloth).
then again i don't really know what icelandic sounds like, i know what norse and swedish sound like though.
don't know if there's eskimoes in russia either... but there are a similar nomad groups in some parts of siberia. ..

Icelandic sounds similar to Gaelic and Norwegian. Swedish sound like the ugliest German you can imagine (Yes i am a Swede)
And yes, i meant nomads but they are strongly related.

I was also getting Incompatable Protocol no matter what I did.
I use WinXP 64 bit, and the directions to remove the cache didn't help me find them. The only CCP folder I could find was the install folder.
What I did to get to where it is now (not accepting connections, 6 players connected) is to *completely uninstall* then reinstall. However, I now see (as I watched the directories go by on the uninstall) that the directions from CCP don't apply to my OS.
If you can't find the folder they're having you look for, try this string instead:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP
Then delete (or just move) the EVE folder.
BUT -- remember, the servers are down right now.
UPDATE: Actually, looks like they're coming up now...
