As a Destoryer is to a frigate, or as a Battlecruiser is to a cruiser, i propose the Corvette, a Big daddy of the Battleship.
were talking smaller than a carrier but still a fair amount bigger than even the tier 3 battleships. The new T2 Battleships could still be more powerful than a corvette (like a HAC is potentially better than a BC).
It would be a purely offensive weapon, Good bonuses to the race generic weapons and tanking ability, but introduce a penalty like the destroyers have. maybe a 50% damage increase, but 25% range penalty for role bonus.
Im throwing this out into the field to see what response i get. feel free to criticise and whatever, despite this is my first post on these forums, im no newbie.

I thought corvettes are suppose to be smaller than frigates!!!!
The battleship "big daddy" is the dreadnought.

eh yeah the corvettes are a mid class between destroyer and frigate and btw the jump from battleship to capital is fine as it is. ---------------------------------------------- |

well i say corvette because i cant think of a hull size that CCP hasnt used yet. that and some games have used corvettes as big ships.
2nd to that the plan was to introduce a non-Capital ship Big brother of the BS into the fold,, like we have the Destroyers and BCs currenty as Big brothers of the frigs and cruisers.
like i said im throwing this out there.

Edited by: Verys on 20/02/2008 21:36:58 I would vote more for a heavy battleship but whatever the plans i would like to see some more details... ---------------------------------------------- |

I agree that we need something above battleships but below cap ships.
Its a bit change though, so i doubt ccp would ever put int he work for it.

How do you create a ship more powerful than a battleship without totally unbalancing mission running? Only thing I can think of would be to give it a jump drive and ban it from gates... but then its just a mini capitol... ç¦ |

What woudl be the problem on unbalancign mission running? its not exaclty as balance in pve matters as much as in PVP, otherwise raven woudl have been nerfed ages ago.
You can also easily avoid a heavy battleship form becoming SOLOPOWNMOBILE.
Just "Cannot fit warp scramblers" cannot fit MWD
To make it "bad at mission running" Maximum targets locked 2.
------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

Just to be picky, historically, the dreadnought was the smaller predecessor to the Battleship. Corvette's are smaller than frigates but bigger than gun boats.

The original poster may be thinking of a "monitor," which is (generally) a very heavily armored gun turret platform with limited mobility.

What about a pocket battleship??? A little smaller than a BS but only with two high slot's of which one is a single gun/missile rack able to fit an XL size weapon. Maybe with less amour/shield but more speed - +15-20% over a standard BS, no drones, increased agility, minimium cargo - enough for ammunition. Because of the size of the weapon, maybe only have only 3 mid/low slots depending on tank type and 1 mid/low slot for the off side of the tank type.
Maybe even invent a new spinal mount weapon that runs the length of the ship, is completely un-guided, very high damage, very slow rate of fire and requires manual aiming by the pilot e.g. has to fly directly at the target.

Like a barge??? Would be cool, could be deployed by Mothership/Titan and and manuvuered buy ships fitted with (large?) tractor beams. Could have a new class of "Amoured Battle Tug" designed to assist barge placement on the battlefield.

A 'corvette' should be a fast destroyer with a large cargo hold, but less weapons, intended for transporting high-risk/illegal goods quickly and safely. The trade-off (against Covert Ops, which should be transporting BPOs and the like) is that a Corvette cannot cloak, compromising much security for a greater cargo capacity.

Ive yet to see two space sims with identical ship classification systems, names dont matter.
What DOES matter, is that a super-battleship is, in my opinion, uncalled for. We have dreads for that role. What we currently have:
Basic ship -> 8-weapon variant frigs -> destroyers cruisers -> battlecruisers - -> battleships
It just cant get any bigger without switching to XLs, adding IMBA bonuses (and getting another T2 battleship) or adding a second high-power rack. *** Sigjack welcome. Bring in the rainbow. ;) |

Yeah, the battleships are already very, very beefy. How could anything bigger fail to dominate the game? Dreads use XL guns that can't hit anything, and they can't use gates, so they're a nightmare to use. A big ship that can use gates and beat down enemy gangs would quickly become the ship of choice unless it was prohibitively expensive or had shabby damage output. If you want an awesome superbattleship, get a faction variant.

Corvettes are already in the games private test server they are supposed to be pod piloted oversized fighters with leadership bonuses with fighter assigment to them and the fighters they lead. But I think the current problem with them is that they are to powerful for thier size and i guess they are looking for ways to limit them.

Sinc epeople are complaining about the name, we could have Mobile Weapons platform. Like was suggested the ability to fit a XL weapon, or 2-4 Large weapons with Damage bonuses. to prevent the overpowering issue for PVE, make it a slow ass slug, for PVP imbalance make it impractical to use unless in a large fleet op, like use of large weapons only, or a high cost to run/build/buy.
Or alternatively, make it a Dedicated Anti-Drone/Light craft Ship, give it 6 missles/6 turrets and good bonuses to light/Medium weapons, and reduce the size to that of BC.

How about just letting people anchor sentries without a POS? Some kind of "battlestation" that can be anchored, fueled and brought online within one minute, which can use a couple XL guns to decent effect. Clumsier than a dread, has to be hauled around, but useful for gate camps, defense of a POS coming out of reinforced, and supercapital sieges.
