Using the search function, I found posts all the way back to 2004 where admins said name changing would be possible (with a payment) "soon".
Is this completely off the drawing board? I understand the issue with scammers and reputations, but there could easily be a 'name history' added in the bio.
Just want to know if this is still a 'Yes, some time in the future' or a 'No, never' so I can reroll now without losing much.

Note: I'd pay $20 US for namechanges... untapped income here CCP... hehe. |

Don't hold your breath. As it stands, the only name change you can get voluntarily is for capitilization. Involuntary changes happen if you've got some sort of profanity or objectionable name. ('****ur****' becomes Amarr Citizen39457, for example) _______________________________

Edited by: Billy Sastard on 21/02/2008 05:26:31 Being able to change your name willy nilly would be a major boon to scammers, cheats, and corp theives. They could do their dirty work then change their name and go do it again.
As it is now people can do this by just using alts of course, but being able to change the name of your main character would make things a bit too easy.
Scenario: Bob is a 30m sp industrial character, he applys and is accepted to a major industry corp, via various machinations Bob gains access to a major portion of the corps assets and takes it all. Immediately after taking everything Bob goes to the eve-o website and changes his name to Fred.
For all intents and purposes Bob just got away with the perfect crime, he stole all of a corps assets and disappeared into thin air. And now he is able to take his impressive skill-set and apply at another corp with nobody the wiser.
It is my opinion that names should stick with the character forever, and that CCP's choice to not change names is a sound choice.
In a game full of thieves and liars there needs to be some form of accountability allowing people to find the offending parties in order to enact their retribution.

It wouldn't be a 'major boon' because they wouldn't be willing to pay $40 (or whatever CCP wants to charge) every time they flipped a can. Not to mention that name change history could be displayed just like corporate history on the character screen.

*shrug* Not much that i as a player can say about it, apart from what's been said above. And discussions with CCP reps typically take place in the forums below this one. I seriously doubt the OP will get much useful answers in this place.

I can't imagine it would be that difficult to apply a numerical code to each user which is bounded to them for good (such as our joyous goverment does to us in the states with social secruity numbers). So instead of searching for "Bob" you search for "000001" or whatever, in which case it will show the profile of that user, and as stated before his entire name "History". With possiblly a 20-40 dollar fee, and maybe a month or so waitining term for a second name change, I can't see a reaon NOT to make this service available as it is indeed needed. Heck, If scamming is such a concern you could only allow 1 name change per-character, but with a name history, and aformentioned asigned numerical codes, I don't think this name change system would be a viable resource to scammers as the true identity of a user could never be a secret.

These corp thieves aren't "flipping a can", they're making off with 3-4 years worth of corporate assets. Several hundred billion is the record at the moment.
The only way that name changing could ever work is if there was a history (like the employment history), otherwise every corp will be stripped bare, or be so paranoid that most players will never be trusted with any hanger accesss at all.

I don't think it's very likely. In EVE your reputation is very important, and to allow that to be wiped clean because you have some extra money is a dangerous idea.

It would be nice if there were paid name changes available. When I started my eve trial over the summer I named my guy based on assuming I would be video meat for the pvp sharks, thus the name Vid Eeomeet. Had I known I would have loved this game so much I wouldn't have given him such a limp name. Guess I should have deleted him and started over, but it's way too late now.
