Originally by: Kirjava Dude, when I got Eve back in 2004 I was gunning for a Covetor. Anyone who genuinly wants to mine in the game goes for a barge, it was worth the commitment to get the Covetor.
Granted the Hulk is out now, but in my opinion the best mining ship in the game should be very - very skill intensive. By that I mean I think they should increase Hulk requirements to Exumers 5 - I have Exhumers 5, I am the perfect miner. Mining was a commitment that paid off when Hulks costed 700M when they were fitted, now everyone flies them like a Raven for ratting.
If you are going to complain now about having to train a Rank 4 to 5 to increase laser yield by 3% and get a third turret, then you should go try something else.
I see your point, but how can CCP possibly increase the reqs now? Can you imagin peeps that have been content with Exhumers IV for many many moons all of a sudden not be able to get into the damm Hulkx after a patch? I'd love to see what an entire galaxy of miners sitting on their asses doing nothing would do the the minerals market I gaurentee you they wouldn't settle for a Covetor for a month; once you get into a hulk, nothing else compares.

I agree with Uncle Mo --So nething lower than a covetor is not worth it to me and why fly a covetor when like uncle mo says, a mac or hulk r right there neway...And Hulk can be had for as low at 100m the last I saw which is really cheap compared to T2 bs...T1 bs's are really really cheap if u build ur own and do ur own mining...I am only part-time miner and could fly an Ore ship below Covetor but why bother...just use a bs with mining drones and named upgrades so with great corp standing and ref eff at lvl 4 do pretty well neway...Luv kernite and pyrox
And ccp already makes wholesale changes ----they did to bpc/bpo's as far as material types ... I was not real happy after a patch to find out that my salvage tackle rig bpc now required armor plates instead of charred micro circuits (now worth far less--I did see the writing on the wall and bought up all the cheap armor plates I could find)
Heck, a lot of oldtimers quit the game over changes made by ccp in the past (and some have come back).. So a lot of ppl have and will no doubt in the future be hurt by game changes...The oldtimers all say it's way too easy now....everthing is given to us....the whiner's win out--lol

one barge a week?!?! that's like a mission-runner losing one raven a week, or a capitol pilot losing one carrier/dread a week, or a freighter pilot losing one freighter a week. if you're losing your main ship every week and it's not a pvp ship, you need to seriously re-evaluate your choice location and tactics. i lose 1 or 2 hulks a year, and even then, to mistakes i never make again (bubbled stations in 0.0, popped in a belt, jammed by rat frigs, tanking failure)
Controlled 0,0 isn't low-sec. I'd be surprised if a full time miner could mine in low-sec and loose as little as a barge/week in Low-secs current form.

This.
Low Sec is just not profitable unless you can control the system or have enough guards to keep the kill mail hoes off your back. Even then that usually cuts profits so hard you mind as well mine in high sec and skip ores like Jaspet and lower.

Originally by: Dwissi Hm - i get the point but would like to add something to give the discussion a different tweak: skills are set as game mechanics - prices are not. So its nothing wrong with the skill requirements in theory but with producers lowering price over and over ;)
If skills would be dumped down each time producers get into price battles and make stuff discount cheap Eve wouldnt be better than most other nerfed MMORPGs. Not sitting in a hulk yet but being a miner i say: make the bloody skill even more expensive instead of lowering the requirements.
If this were market flux I would agree, but these new prices are a direct result of game mechanic change (i.e. invention). Since the market has undergone an artificial shift I see this as simply balancing out effected parts of the game.

Built a covetor and then realized it'd take a long time to skill up to it. So I bit the bullet and began training, and started reading threads like this.
I've now copped a Hulk for 92M, and expect to pimp it out for max capacity. I guess I'll either sell the covetor or park it for quick use at my manufacturing station as my mining operation is 4 jumps away.
As a solo player, mining in 0.9 to 1.0 high-sec is the only way to go-even Kernite is not that good of an ore compared pyroxeres given the yield and the hassle of 0.5-0.6 systems. That may change when I get the Hulk, though.
