Well it depends how you look at it. Pirates may make a profit, yes its true. But when you consider that pirates intercept only a minimal amount of a corps (or alliances) isk (in terms of items and ships) then you could say the corps are winning. I think when player owned stations are bought in, and standup fights are more the norm, pirates will begin to lose out.

Good points all around but I think you are wrong Nightfang. You may think that pirates have the edge but it is limited. Killing smaller ships is, in and of itself, a viable pirate activity. You get your money from the loot that is dropped from said victims. But when you are locked up at a station your advantage is gone. You don't have the ability to earn any more money while docked. The people that are hunting you may not be making any isk waiting for you, but they probably are not dependent on you for their isk. I may be mistaken but many people belong to production corps. They may not be pvp'ers like you but their money lies elsewhere. If you are bottled up in a station how will you stop them from earning theirs? I don't see how you have the advantage then.

In fact the germans had a similar tactic to pirates with their submarines trying to stealthily pick their targets.
It took the allies a lot of time to find the proper counter tactics and hence great losses.
What you are referring to is the surface part of the navy. Nice example of that is the hunt for the bismarck. First time it came out it was hunted down and destroyed
Ah ah ah hold it right there - a minor correction - the Bismarck wasn't destroyed, the crew by itself sunk it after the steering was defect and almost all turrets destroyed to prevent the english gank armada to capture the battleship.
