For starters, in its simplified form (ignoring reloads, if any), DPS = volley damage / rate of fire Unless your "rate of fire" is not precisely 1.00 seconds... you get the idea.

Volly damage is how much damage you put out in one cycle of guns/missiles and drones.
DPS is damage per second, how much dmg you do per second....
they are different cause of rate of fire, you can put out a 7000volly but have a 20sec rate of fire (hypothetically), or put out a 3500 volly, and have a rate of fire of 5 sec, the 5 sec rate of fire would be doing more dmg.
thats the difference.

DPS = Damage Per second
Volley Damage = every weapon firing once.

a ship does 2000 volley damage and has a refire of 8 seconds (250dps), and another ship does 800 volley damage and a refire of 2.6 seconds, over the period of 8 seconds the second ship does more damage, but 9 seconds the volley damage ship has done far more...volley damage is frontloaded damage to smash your foe apart fast, whilst dps is continual damage per second.
this is mirrored by how a rate of fire increase leads to a higher damage per second than a damage modifier increase, which increases volley damage. -------------------------------------------- [IMAGE REMOVED]

Uhm...it's pretty self-explanatory.
One is the damage you do in one volley, one is the damage you do per second. Not sure how I can make it any clearer.
