I have a new PC (Alienware setup) and everytime I press escape in EVE to get to the options, it causes my system to reboot.
Has anyone else seen this issue? So far it's only EVE that sends my PC in to a reboot, other games like Hitman 2 etc work perfectly!
Below is my DXDiag, i would include a complete history etc of this PC, but it's 500kb :)

Are you connected trough a network?
Be sure to route the following ports:
TCP : 26000 UDP : 26001
I had the same problem and couldn't understand why pressing ESC would have anything to do with my network. It worked for me tough.
If you are running a software firewall / router, then you should restart it before trying to connect.

I am running through a network, but I've never had this problem before. My other PC which is next to me is working fine! And it's on the same network!
Does anyone at CCP need more info? I cannot run the logserver as it will not save any info when it reboots!
Cheers

Its a problem with the drivers you are using. Update these to be the official release drivers from your manufacturer (i think in your case nvidia). I had the same problem at the start and found that the display driver was the issue. Regards

OOps also the Radeon 9800 drivers should be release or official - not beta !

Hi
As your running Win XP you can probably stop the reboot happening. I believe the issue is that when you press the Esc Key in Eve it generates and unexpected error or critical error in MS terms. XP by default is set to reboot after such an error has ocurred.
Right Click on my computer on your desktop. Go to the advanced tab, now go to start up and recovery section down the bottom. Click the settings button, about half way down in the new window which will have opened you will see a system failure section. You will notice 3 check boxs. Uncheck the Automatically restart check box, leave the other 2 checked as having the admin alert and the log may help you track down the problem Eve is causing to reboot your PC in the first place.
Now Eve will probably still dump you out to desktop. To help resolve this problem with eve run the log server in the Eve directory before you start to play the game, try to repeat the error by doing what you normally do and then locate the log in the Eve directory and send it along with a short summary to CCP via the bug reporting section on the player website. Also if you get any windows errors after Eve crashes also include them in your bug report to CCP. If you can't cut and paste the error take a screen shot, and using the paint program which can be found in the Accessories part of your start menu you can paste the screenie and save it as a .jpg so that its file size will not be to large.

Cheers all, even though I was in BETA for a few months, this is the biggest issue I've had since I started :)
Will try the system reboot option, it's amazing what you forget about when you don't use those options!

Just tried it again, having no luck, I even ran EVE in window mode.
I press escape and wham, I get a black screen this time and then a total lock up, no reboot as the option to reboot has been turned off!
I have checked the log files in the log directory and they are all 1k in size, they mainly contain these strings, this is from the latest file!
File created 2003.06.12 17:30:45 An exception has occurred. It has been logged in the log server as exception #3 An exception has occurred. It has been logged in the log server as exception #4

Lazarus, which version of drivers are you using? I am using Catalyst 3.4 downloaded from ATI, as far as I can tell it's not a beta driver.

My two ISK. Dump your eve cache file. Dumping the cache file seems to fix a lot of oddball problems.
Your virtual memory is set a little higher than Microsoft reccomends, turn it down to 768MB (1.5 times your physical memory).

Tried all of that, no luck.
I've narrowed it down to the following.
1. Portrait images when a user comes online (addressbook entries) 2. Pressing Escape in fullscreen/window mode.
Some portraits i have seen are of a different colour/darker than what they are supposed to be.
I.e. my character on the character selection screen is a very vivid colour, but when in the game, it's fine, same goes for a member of my corp, Reaper man, he appears to be very dark, but he's not.
I am certain it's something to do with the character icons and the ATI drivers, what it is? No idea.
The PC is only a couple of days old and it's had a thorough check with diagnostics and benchmark programs and it has not shown any issues.

I have exactly the same problem, just installed a P4 2.8C 800 on an Abit IC7 with BIOS 13 and a Hercules 9800 Pro. Every time I press Esc the game locks up totally. I'm debating putting my GF4Ti4200 back in cos I'm getting pi**ed off with it.

I'd guess this is your problem:
Cannot prepare cursor, no D3DDevice An exception has occurred. It has been logged in the log server as exception #15
Are you running the eve log server? If that is the case you should find more information in it's logs about the problem.

I had a smaller version of this problem, think it's something with the ATI drivers and EvE usage of direct x 9 being optimized for nVidia.
Fresh official ATI drivers fixed it for me.

I'm using the latest official drivers (Catalyst 3.4) downloaded from the ATI website.
I did a clean install of XP Pro and used the 3.4's from the start so it cant be old drivers. When I get home from work I'm gonna try the 3.2's see if they make a difference.
I only built it last night so I haven't tried anything else but I might give MOHAA a try.
Thanks for your help everyone.
BTW how do you clear the cache in EVE? Do you just delete everything out of the cache folder?

Yes, simply delete the contents of c:\program files\ccp\eve\cache
You'll loose all your setting in prefs.ini, but there's nothing really important in there.

Deleting the contents of the cache really don't help in this matter, it's more to do with the code of the game than it is with the cache.
I do wish it was that simple though.

OpenGL Settings:- 4xAA 8xAniso Texture Preferences - High Quality Mipmap Detail - High Quality VSync - Default Off Truform - Always Off Compatability Settings Force Z Buffer - disabled KTX - disabled

Hope these settings help everybody (especially you Jim, Its a right ****er building/buying a killer rig and finding it doesn't work!!)

Well, I got it working late last night, I had to take the drastic measure of doing a fresh install of Windows XP and all the drivers.
It's running fine on the Catalyst 3.4 driver set.
Taking the drastic step of re-installing windows shouldn't be an option to any of us and it would have been nice to hear from one of the devs that they were looking in to the problem.

Jim diGriz, IMHO if you on your computer can make the problems go away then it's not EVEs fault to begin with. You probably had residues of an old driver not correctly uninstalled in your system causing problems with DX9. If you had played other DX9 games the result would most certainly have been the same.
Good to hear you are fine now!

Personally Jim I think your doing all that and it's not anything your doing its the server.
Ive not changed a thing and the server just allows me in and sometimes it doesnt I was playing fine for hours yesterday, then I suddenly get constatnly botted to desktop.
A few hours later I try again it works fine.
Same thing this morning I was playing for hours, suddenly I get booted to desktop and now its all the game does.
I havent changed a thing on my set up etc, just sometimes the server allows me in sometimes it starts booting me out when I get past character selection screen,
The game allows me to log in and get to account managemtn change password etc etc forums obviously and everything else, just the server isnt always allowing me in WTF up with that ?

Lol, you're having a laugh ain't you?
All my doing, how? The alienware PC is pre-installed, i installed nothing except EVE at the time, everything was done at Alienware's setup in Ireland!
Now you'd expect it to work right out of the box wouldn't you? And you wouldn't expect to have to re-install windows yourself to try and fix it.

About your original problem:
Since you were not able to read the blue screen (you said that the screen was black instead of rebooting), I strongly think that it was either a DX 9.0 or a Driver problem. You could have gone to the Event Log (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer). In there, under the "System" category, you could have found an entry with "savedump" in the Source column for every bluescreen you got.
Using the number, and the additional information possibly contained in the entry, you most likely would have been able to correct the problem without re-installing XP.
If your computer reboots/freezes/has a blue screen, it most definitely is a driver or hardware problem, and NOT EVE's fault.
Ciao, Aronis!
