There is only so much CCP can do without some sort of magic solution, more hardware will only mean people make bigger blobs. People know that fleet fights of 200+ cause lag and still whine when their 400+ fleet brings the system to a crawl. If suddenly 400 player fleet fights become playable people will just bring 800 to fights. They are fighting a losing battle.

Lag is present in <50 ship fleets, even in empty systems. I was podkilled once in low sec system with <15 ppl in local. Jumped in, scene loaded, only 20% of hull left. Before ship went poof I started to clicking to warpout. Next thing on screen - medical bay, YAY. :)
But yes, no point to whine about lag.
Cheers

Lag is going to be around regardless, and I'm sure CCP is working on improving the problem (Need For Speed initiative, InfiniBand). It doesnt happen overnight. No sense complaining. However, I think the lag issues which have plagued this game and it's epic fleet battles should be number 1 priority, way over something like ambulation or atmospheric flight. Really it comes down to the player though, if you don't want to lag out, don't jump into a system with 300-400+ people, and if you do, consequences are on you. Do we really want CCP putting a cap on how many people can be in system? That could end the game.

Lag will happen in Jita and a select few other systems similar to it, or in larger fleet battles (also counts if you're on the same node as a major fleet battle, and nodes aren't by proximity so you could be in one system and be on the same node as a battle going on in a completely different region 50+ jumps away).
If you're seeing bad lag in any other cases than that, then the problem is most likely at your end or inbetween you and the servers, not with CCP and their servers.
Also, people complain about lag on these forums all the freaking time. What the hell are you talking about?

Or so I hope.
For those that don't know how, you can create log servers while you play EVE by doing the following:
1. Find your Eve folder in Windows Explorer 2. When you have the Eve folder open, find "logserver.exe" and launch it (Do NOT have EVE running) 3. Select "File" -> "New Workspace" 4. Start Eve like you would normally do 5. When you have reproduced the bug, Eve crashes or when you kill the process if it hangs, select "File" -> "Save workspace as..." and save the workspace in a place you'll find it again.
This is the instructions I was given by one of the GM's, that's all I think we can do right now to be honest, spam away with log servers until they find the kink they've got, oh and don't forget to compress it in a .zip file.

What kind of hardware do you have? I used to have the same lag issues and I got a new pimptastic Dell XPS and now no lag, even in systems with 300 peeps.

If you read the InfiniBand thread it doesn't give much hope for much less lag in fleet battles. It'll mean a lot for Jita and mission systems, and possibly also systems being hit by association-lag (ie. those on the same node as a large fleet battle), but InfiniBand will not help on a single grid which is where large battles occur.

So does everyone about their pet problem. I think so too, but when all is said and done, the amount of people affected by fleet battle lag is a small percentage of EVE's population, and its the most loyal part. From a financial point of view, it makes more sense to invest in the fickle majority than the loyal minority
Also, I don't really think lag CAN be solved. The only thing I see working is if CCP introduces blob-restricting measures. It can't be done by limits on numbers, but maybe some measures can be made that makes it undesirable to blob....

CCP has been working on lag for many years now. They have a team of experts 24/7 on this problem. In the meantime, well just be patient. CCP knows what they, the experts are doing. I think.

Complaining has no use. We have dont it for so long. If it was fixable it would have been fixed.
Its the only downside to have everyone in one world. Its part of EVE now. And untill CCP rewrites their code, it will remain laggy. Too many things are depending on the servers.

Edited by: Wreth Saran on 24/02/2008 13:03:03 I'd just like to verify that this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the users computers, how do I know this? Because when it DOES freeze I am able to alt-tab out of the client normally or window key and I can pretty much go on MSN, Winamp etc. without any real issue, it's nothing to do with the computer itself, oh and I'd like to point out freezing generally doesn't mean it's to do with the computer. This is an issue that CCP seriously needs to get round I think before ANYTHING else as it's effecting a large number of people, if your not getting this then it's likely you are in a low population system and/or very lucky and only getting small jitters or some such that you barely notice, regardless it is there, these freezes I've been experiencing occur not only when coming to areas with a dense amount of objects ( Usually stations, stargates, or mission areas ) but also when loading up the market or other bits of information.
I'll give an example even IF it's a singleplayer version, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, I'm sure some of you have at least heard of that game, it was so buggy and had such numerous freezes it was unplayable without the patching, but that was the fault of the coding done on the game itself not the computer.
