Hi all. It seems evident that our portraits are stored in 3D so can be rendered in any size ... judging by the fact they can go wrong anyway.
My question is: Is it possible to export your character model somehow to view it in another 3D app at all? If so, how would one go about doing it? It would be fairly useful for me.

Hmm, nobody know the answer to this?

Not sure how it's done exactly, but i understand the image server holds multiple files for each character portrait at varying sizes - (PNGs i think).
As far as I know there is no way to extract 3d data in whatever format.
But what do i know ... |

but that wouldn't explain why they have to be 'rendered' or why it glitches like it does

Your portrait has not been rendered yet (you have the big '!' here), that's why you see a basic mesh/texture portrait when you export it in-game.
The small character portrait you have in-game at the moment is just a grab from the character creator. A hi-res version will be rendered from scratch at some point, at which you'll have a correct portrait here, and will be able to export one from the game as well.

For models that are in the game yes. However, CCP does not distribute a 3D model for every character in the game with the client ;)

I'm fairly sure that the EVE client renders portraits as necessary, and img.eve.is is just a server version of the same thing. For example, when I need to render my face, this comes up in logserver (truncated):
89 2008.02.24 19:33:49:469 Rot::GetCopy : res:/Model/Face/facescene.blue (4 cache hits): 0.184 ms. 90 2008.02.24 19:33:49:470 Rot::GetCopy : res:/Model/Face/Caldari/Achura/male/face/cam01.blue (2 cache hits): 0.804 ms. 91 2008.02.24 19:33:49:472 Open res:/Model/Face/Caldari/Achura/Male/Face/cam01Shape.tri 92 2008.02.24 19:33:49:474 Rot::GetCopy : res:/Model/Face/Caldari/Achura/male/face/cam01_blend_vb.blue (2 cache hits): 0.792 ms. 93 2008.02.24 19:33:49:474 Rot::GetCopy : res:/Model/Face/Caldari/Achura/male/face/deco/Tattoo Strips 2/default.blue (1 cache hits): 0.135 ms. 94 2008.02.24 19:33:49:475 Rot::GetCopy : res:/Model/Face/SceneOptions/Background/Whirlpool/default.blue (1 cache hits): 0.094 ms. 95 2008.02.24 19:33:49:475 Rot::GetCopy : res:/Model/Face/SceneOptions/Lights/Singleside/default.blue (3 cache hits): 0.039 ms.
As for the OP, I wouldn't be surprised if finding the files named above would let you render the face.

using TriExporter I can find all those files however I have no idea how to open '.blue' files (which seem to store all the textures) and I can't seem to find any Morphing data anywhere

This is the sort of thing I want, but with the in-game character morphing selections done and properly-applied textures/features (that was just done by slapping a portrait image on) It would be nearly impossible to do align them accurately in 3D studio - surely somebody knows a way to do it?

Couldn't you just make a square, slap the bitmap on it using the 3d data as mentioned above, and attach the vertices of the models together? Keep in mind to make the edges of the bitmap (where there is no data) transparent.

Already said - never seen a tool for it, never seen it utilised. If the tech existed for it, someone would have already made something for it, and someone would have responded positively to your thread.
The imageserver (afaik) stores JPEGs (not png) of varying size, e.g. http://img.eve.is/serv.asp?s=256&c=146409153 (ccp kieron). Change the "s" variable to 64, you'll get a 64x64. It doesn't render on demand because you'll get jack if you enter a non-standard size, e.g. 68.
So the structural/textural data for your avatar probably resides somewhere in teh bowels of a db and is only called at the point where these images are rendered originally, and probably also when you do a grab of a char portrait in game "save character portrait" or something.
CCP provide mounds of game data to the masses, item data, maps, live character data. The 3d info for portraits would be cool to have too, but the functionality doesn't exist as far as anyone here knows (so far). Besides, letting that sort of data out would just increase load on already overtaxed servers.
Your questions were answered. |

Hmm, so I'm guessing we could only do it if we had CCP's sourcecode or something. Oh well
I suppose it dosen't look TOO bad when I just use the 'base' models, plus I can change details and colours of the textures - Just no morphing:
