I'd recommend for the start to focus on your academy and town hall a bit, while researching up to wealth in economy so you can get your luxury goods. Also remember to click the stack of wood on your island view and sent workers there to gather it. Once you have wealth researched you can do the same for the luxury good. Btw. once you get to foreign cultures under seafearing you can build an embassy which allows you to join alliances :)

If you name it Sparta I will invade you and loot you and do all sorts of things to your neighbours and blame it on you We have too many Spartas. Wine - Increases happiness you need this by lvl 5 to keep your pop happy. Marble - the most valuable comod as its used in almost all building upgrades after lvl 2 or 3. Sulfur - needed for ships and a few various other things. Crystal - asfaik atm anyway i can only use this to upgrade my acad again. Values: Wood - 4-6 gold , Marble - 15-25 gold , Sulfur - 15-20 gold , crystal 15-20 gold. These will change over time and get as high as 50+ gold p/u. Gold will also be needed heavily later for upgrading your town hall. Generally commod's trade on a 1:1 basis with marble being the occasional 2:1 (2 of them for 1 marble). Upkeep is expensive so only send out an army if u can afford it. And i do mean expensive the upkeep doubles when its away. You can never have too many trade ships as well.
