Hi guys!
I'm not so very old into this game and would like to hear some opinions on my Drake setup that is meant to be for passive shield tanking. Mind the fact that I cannot use any T2 gear yet so I use mostly meta-3 stuff:
High Slots:................5x Heavy Launcher; 2x Rocket Launcher; 1x Drone Agumentor Medi Slots:................4xLSE; 1xSR; 1xHardener (rat-specifik or Invuln.Field) Low Slots:.................3xSPR; 1xPDS
Rigs:.........................3xPurgers
This setup gives me 14.560 shield cap with 243 sec recharge time. I'm doing quite OK in L3 missions.
My question is why some prefer double invulnarability fields or several hardeners instead of maxing out the recharge rate of the shield and shield cap?
Also feel free to comment on my setup.
I have 90 CPU and 50 Grid left with this setup.

The tank is sufficient for missioning. Your DPS however is probably quite pitiful without using BCU's. You really need to work on those fitting skills, simply because the pair of rocket launchers isn't really helping you much. Just train your drone skills a bit and carry a set of light drones if you're worried about npc frigates - 5 hobgoblin drones will chew through any light drone pretty handily.

My thoughts:
The reason people don't stack too many Large Shield Extenders is principally because not only does it become pointless (too much tank is a waste other than for bragging rights) but LSEs add to your signature radius. With 3 purger rigs and 4 LSEs (and I presume lvl 1 in Shield Rigging) your sig radius is bigger than a battleship - so everything is hitting you for more damage.
Secondly, resisting damage effectively adds to your shield cap because you are stopping damage getting through. If you resist only 50% of all incoming damage then you've effectively doubled your effective shield hitpoints.
My overall opinion of your build is that its "too much tank, not enough gank" but if you're really low on skillpoints I can see why you would've gone with tank rather than gank.
Also, you should be using 7 Heavy Missile Launchers - dump the 4th LSE, replace it with an Invuln and replace one or more SPRs with Ballistic Control Systems - reason being "rats that are dead can't hurt you".
Bottom line you should avoid over-tanking your Drake - if you're never going below about 50% shields then chances are you could swap out some tank for gank.

I noticed the missile thing too, but he doesn't have the CPU/grid left to fit anything but rockets.

EFT helps.
Try this. Start with 7 HML, 3 LSE, one BCU
Add one photon scattering, one thermal, and one invul field.
3 X purgers is very nice.
Then make it fit with the low slots left.
Once everything is tech II you can do all lvl 4s if you fly smart(manage aggro and read discriptions from the mission survival guide, look for it online).
Your goal is to be able to fit all that tech II and 2 BCU IIs and one SPR or one BCU and 2 SPRs (so once tech II work tward maxing out your PG and CPU).
The 3 SPR setups are a little extreme and using the Drake's shield regen to make up for poor shield compensation skills (resists). Sort of like putting spinners on a Ford Taurus.
Have fun

Edited by: Sean Faust on 25/02/2008 17:35:34 i have a caldari alt i mission with who can pilot a drake, but only barely has the skills needed for it (BC 3, heavy missiles 3, all shield related skills at 2 or 3)
I have mine fit with 7x malkuth heavy launchers in the highs 2x named LSE, 2x named invuln field, 2x shield rechargers 1x ballistics control, 1x spr, 2x pdu in the lows
hasn't let me down yet for missioning in level 3s despite the low tank, and nothing yet has managed to break my tank

With that many hit-points in your shield you don't even need the relays since your shield will recharge quickly on its own. Best to use ballistics control units and raise your DPS.
Also as said before higher resists are better than more shield points since extenders give a flat rate increase while resits give a fractional increase. So after the second extender a resistance amplifier would yield grater rewards. --Bird of Prey: Forum God
